Tests were conducted at combustion pressures in the range of 100 -- 220 psig and thrust levels of 40 -- 170 newtons. Beeswax was tested with oxygen as the oxidizer and showed a regression rate at least three times as high as traditional hybrid propellant combinations such as hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) and liquid oxygen (LOX). This provides the promise of a high thrust hybrid rocket motor using a simple, single port geometry and overcomes the main weakness of traditional hybrid rocket motor propellants, which are low regression rates. Beeswax was also tested with nitrous oxide as an oxidizer, but further testing is needed to attain high enough combustion chamber pressures to achieve stable combustion. Experimental evaluation of the specific impulse for beeswax and oxygen was moderately successful for lab scale testing, but needs further refinement. Analytical studies were performed to evaluate the theoretical performance of non-conventional hybrid rocket motors. This analysis indicates beeswax, lard, a mixture of paraffin and lard, and combinations of beeswax and aluminum should all perform better than traditional hybrid rocket propellants considered when burned with oxygen. For a combustion chamber pressure of 500.38 psig, beeswax and oxygen yielded a maximum specific impulse of 327 s. The high specific impulse combined with a high regression rate combine to make beeswax and oxygen a potentially high performing hybrid rocket motor propellant for launch vehicles, suborbital rockets, or orbital kick motors.

Book excerpt: The degree project arises from the interest in hybrid rocket engines since it is a modern global technology among rocket engines, and has not been built or tested in Colombia. The main objective of the project is to design, build and test a Design, build and test a 250 N hybrid thrust rocket motor. For this, the motor was designed with paraffin as the solid fuel, and nitrous oxide as the liquid oxidant when designing a methodology for design, construction and testing. In the conceptual design stage, different input parameters were defined, in which the pressure of the combustion chamber was 290 psi, nozzle temperature of 2856 K, flight time of 5 seconds, specific impulse of 185 seconds, with which the different elements of the combustion chamber could be designed, including the nozzle. Additionally, the oxidant tank and the valves system were designed for their subsequent manufacture and purchase, respectively. At the same time, the electronic system was proposed in order to measure the thrust, pressure in the combustion chamber and temperature in the nozzle; and the UCAND-3 benching test was redesigned to carry out the experiments, which were planned with a sample of three fuel grains. However, it was found that the igniter did not burn completely in any test to make the reaction between fuel and oxidant be carried out satisfactorily because the burning surface area was not enough for the reaction to take place, so it is necessary to change the ignition system. However, both the hybrid rocket engine and the benching test are ready to be used in the near future.

To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.
