  • ISBN : 0323151310
  • Pages : 416 pages

Download or read book Histocompatibility written by George Snell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histocampatibility covers the genetic, immunologic, and the chemical studies on allograft rejection process. The book is composed of 13 chapters that describe how these studies relate to medicine, organ transplantation in man, basic immunology, cell membrane structures, and cancer research. After briefly dealing with the early studies on isografts and allografts in laboratory animals, the book describes the histogenetic methods of gene manipulation and transplantation that permit identification of individual histocompatibility loci. The following chapter examines the significance of congenic resistant lines in determining the diversity of histocompatibility loci and allele and immune response genes. Other chapters present immunogenetic and serological methods, as well as the applications of these methods in studying alloantigens and H-2 complex loci and of immunogenetic methods to human. The book also discusses the practical implication of HLA immunogenetics in organ transplantation and describes the biochemical, immunochemical, and dynamic properties of alloantigens. A chapter discusses the associations between HLA system and disease and the various mechanisms that have been suggested to explain these associations. The last chapter focuses on allograft reaction and on established facts of cellular immunity. This book is a valuable source of information for researchers in the fields of medicine, organ transplantation in man, basic immunology, cell membrane structures, and cancer.

Book Natural Immunity to Normal Hemopoietic Cells

Download or read book Natural Immunity to Normal Hemopoietic Cells written by Bent Rolstad, M.D. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-11-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Immunity to Normal Hemopoietic Cells presents the first comprehensive compilation of experimental systems, theories, and views of the mechanisms behind NK cell recognition of normal hemopoietic cells. Leading scientists in the field have contributed chapters covering the role of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I antigen expression of target cells in NK cell recognition, descriptions of NK allospecificities controlled by the MHC, and the role of alloreactive T cells and NK cells in acute bone marrow allograft rejection. Controversies between different theories are discussed in a balanced manner to convey a complete picture of the "state of the art." References give comprehensive, updated lists of current and previous research publications on this topic. The book is essential for immunologists, hematologists, clinical bone marrow transplantation researchers, and other scientists and students interested in recognition mechanisms of the immune system and the role of the MHC.

Book Immune Biology of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Download or read book Immune Biology of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation written by Gerard Socie and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immune Biology of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation provides clinical and scientific researchers with a deep understanding of the current research in this field and the implications for translational practice. By providing an overview of the immune biology of HSCT, an explanation of immune rejection, and detail on antigens and their role in HSCT success, this book embraces biologists and clinicians who need a broad view of the deeply complex processes involved. It then moves on to discuss the immunobiology mechanisms that influence graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect, and transplantation success. Using illustrative figures, highlighting key issues, describing recent successes and discussing unanswered questions, this book sums up the current state of HSCT to enhance the prospects for the future. Allogeneic HSCT is a medical procedure in which a patient receives blood-forming stem cells from a genetically similar but not identical donor. This procedure is commonly performed for people with diseases of the blood, bone marrow, or certain cancers, but it remains risky with many possible complications. As such, experimental practice is reserved for preclinical animal models including the mouse and dog. These animal models have been essential in developing transplant protocols, including preclinical testing of conditioning regimens, treatment of GVHD, and understanding the pathology of GVHD as well as the immunological mechanisms of GVHD and GVL effect. However, recent research has revealed significant species differences between humans and animal models that must be considered when relating animal model studies to clinical allogeneic HSCT scenarios. - Brings together perspectives leading laboratories and clinical research groups to highlight advances from bench to the bedside - Guides readers through the caveats that must be considered when drawing conclusions from studies with animal models before correlating to clinical allogeneic HSCT scenarios - Categorizes the published advances in various aspects of immune biology of allegeneic HSCT to illustrate opportunities for clinical applications

Book Biology of the Mouse Histocompatibility 2 Complex

Download or read book Biology of the Mouse Histocompatibility 2 Complex written by J. de Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Somewhere I heard a story of a bridge and a painter. The bridge was enormous and was made all of metal, and the painter's job was to keep it from rusting. He would start at one end and slowly proceed, day by day, month by month, toward the other end, painting the bridge. But no sooner would he finish with the painting than the bridge would begin to rust again. The rust, too, would start at one end and slowly proceed toward the other end, systematically destroying the painter's endeavor. And so the painter would return to where he had started, and begin painting again, slowly proceeding toward the other end of the bridge, always just one step ahead of the rust. And if the story is true, the painter might still be painting that bridge-a modern Sisyphus! During the writing of this book, the story of the painter and his bridge kept coming to mind. The field the book covers has been developing so rapidly that, like the painter, I too had to return to where I had started and fight the rust of obsolescence. But unlike the painter, I had a deadline to meet, which constituted a point of no return. And so, sending off this manuscript, I have no choice but to watch the fruits of my endeavor be overtaken by the rust.
