  • ISBN : 1931498210
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Common Sense Forestry written by Hans W. Morsbach and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common Sense Forestry relates thirty years' experience of an environmentally conscious woodland owner. Much of the book is devoted to starting a forest and how to maintain it. It answers such questions as: What seedlings to buy? Should your forest be monoculture or a mixed forest? What is the payback for planting and maintaining a forest? Is seeding a good way to start a forest? What kind of seeds work best? Does it pay to hire a consultant? What should he/she do for you? Does it pay to do much maintenance in your forest? How should I prune? Is timberland improvement worthwhile? How, when and whether to thin? How to herbicide and when? Can the damage done to nature by chemicals be justified by the benefits to your seedlings? What are the economics of woodland ownership? The success and history of German forestry methods is discussed and suggests what can be learned from these age-old practices. It will tell you how to file your income taxes, what equipment to buy, what works--and does not work--and why. It also provides guidance on how to deal with state and federal programs. Although intended for private woodland owners, the book is used as a classroom text in universities. The book is more practical than technical, yet still imparts knowledge of basic forestry, explaining terms such as succession and shade tolerance and how to apply these concepts in practice. Even sophisticated concepts are covered in plain, non-technical terms. Hans Morsbach, the author, believes that forestry is an art more than a science. Competent foresters may apply different methods of managing their forests and achieve comparable results. Still, it is important to be guided by natural forest principles. Doing nothing may sometimes be a better course of action than doing too much. The book suggests ways to gauge your involvement with your woodland to time available and your personal preference. It is most important that you enjoy your forest.

Book Short Rotation Woody Crop Production Systems for Ecosystem Services and Phytotechnologies

Download or read book Short Rotation Woody Crop Production Systems for Ecosystem Services and Phytotechnologies written by Ronald S. Zalesny Jr. and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While international efforts in the development of short rotation woody crops (SRWCs) have historically focused on the production of biomass for bioenergy, biofuels, and bioproducts, research and deployment over the past decade has expanded to include broader objectives of achieving multiple ecosystem services. In particular, silvicultural prescriptions developed for SRWCs have been refined to include woody crop production systems for environmental benefits such as carbon sequestration, water quality and quantity, and soil health. In addition, current systems have been expanded beyond traditional fiber production to other environmental technologies that incorporate SRWCs as vital components for phytotechnologies, urban afforestation, ecological restoration, and mine reclamation. In this Special Issue of the journal Forests, we explore the broad range of current research dedicated to our topic: International Short Rotation Woody Crop Production Systems for Ecosystem Services and Phytotechnologies

Book Forest Communities Community Forests

Download or read book Forest Communities Community Forests written by Jonathan Kusel and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2003-08-04 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Communities, Community Forests is a collection of stories about twelve communities in the United States and their efforts to protect and restore their community forests. It explores the struggles and opportunities faced by people as they work to invest in natural capital, reverse decades of poor forest practices, tackle policy gridlock, and address community as well as ecological health. The case studies are organized by the dominant themes in American community forestry today, with the basic premise that healthy ecosystems depend on healthy communities, and vice-versa. Unlike most studies of contemporary forestry, Forest Communities, Community Forests focuses on community well-being and, more generally, community concerns. While some recent studies have examined the environmental benefits of place-based resource management or collaborative processes, few have looked at community needs and concerns-beyond the question of how to entice locals to comply with 'new' forestry. It is our hope that these case studies will convey the importance of community-based forestry, and contribute to the understanding and development, and ultimately the success of new community-based initiatives in the U.S.

Book Developments in Thermochemical Biomass Conversion

Download or read book Developments in Thermochemical Biomass Conversion written by A.V. Bridgwater and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 1630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many developments in the science and technology of thermo chemical biomass conversion since the previous conference on Advances in Thermochemical Biomass Conversion in Interlaken, Switzerland, in 1992. This fourth conference again covers all aspects of thermal biomass conversion systems from fundamental research through applied research and development to demon stration and commercial applications to reflect the progress made in the last four years. All aspects of bioenergy systems are covered from pretreatment through to end-user applications with increased consideration paid to the environmental benefits and problems of implementing bio-energy systems. There was an excellent response with over 200 papers offered and over 180 delegates from 29 countries attending the conference. The programme was divided into five main areas covering pyrolysis, pretreatment, gasification, combustion and system studies and this division is reflected in the structure of these conference proceedings. Each main section was preceded by a state-of-the-art review to provide a focus for the ensuing presentations and an authoritative reference. All the papers included have been subject to a full peer review process. As with any international conference, an important aim was to exchange ideas and discuss problems with fellow researchers, as well as to hear about the latest research and development and applications. A workshop programme was included to encourage this interaction in areas of interest selected by participants. The resul tant workshop reports provide a summary of topical problems and opportunities.
