  • ISBN : 0313352291

Download or read book Stephen King written by Tony Magistrale and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-12-21 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of the work of Stephen King explores the distinctly American fears and foibles that King has celebrated, condemned, and generally examined in the course of his wildly successful career. Stephen King: America's Storyteller explores the particular American-ness of Stephen King's work. It is the first major examination to follow this defining theme through King's 40-year career, from his earliest writings to his most recent novels and films made from them. Stephen King begins by tracing Stephen King's rise from his formative years to his status as a one of the most popular writers in publishing history. It then takes a close look at the major works from his canon, including The Shining, The Stand, It, Dolores Claiborne, and The Dark Tower. In these works and others, author Tony Magistrale focuses on King's deep rooted sense of the American experience, exemplified by his clear-eyed presentation of our historical and cultural foibles and scars; his gallery of unlikely friendships that cross race, age, and class boundaries; and his transcendent portrayals of uniquely American survival instincts, fellowship, and acts of heroism from the least likely of sources.

Book Children of the Father King

Download or read book Children of the Father King written by Bianca Premo and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pioneering study of childhood in colonial Spanish America, Bianca Premo examines the lives of youths in the homes, schools, and institutions of the capital city of Lima, Peru. Situating these young lives within the framework of law and intellectual history from 1650 to 1820, Premo brings to light the colonial politics of childhood and challenges readers to view patriarchy as a system of power based on age, caste, and social class as much as gender. Although Spanish laws endowed elite men with an authority over children that mirrored and reinforced the monarch's legitimacy as a colonial "Father King," Premo finds that, in practice, Lima's young often grew up in the care of adults--such as women and slaves--who were subject to the patriarchal authority of others. During the Bourbon Reforms, city inhabitants of all castes and classes began to practice a "new politics of the child," challenging men and masters by employing Enlightenment principles of childhood. Thus the social transformations and political dislocations of the late eighteenth century occurred not only in elite circles and royal palaces, Premo concludes, but also in the humble households of a colonial city.

  • Author : Phyllis Raphael
  • Publisher : Roadswell Editions
  • Release : 2014-08-21
  • ISBN : 1938263030
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book OFF THE KING S ROAD written by Phyllis Raphael and published by Roadswell Editions. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fascinating . . . laugh-aloud funny." - The Los Angeles Times In December of 1968, Phyllis Raphael landed in London as the restless wife of a Hollywood movie producer. With their three young children in tow from L.A., she was prepared for a London vacation on MGM's dime while her husband was on the set. Instead - in a maneuver Raphael wasn't expecting - he left her for an eighteen-year-old actress. And in a decision she never could have predicted, Raphael stayed in London with her kids. Off the King's Road is Raphael's courageous and funny story of being an expatriate let loose in the turbulence of Swinging London in the 1960s. She arrived naive, dependent and dissatisfied, and left several years later as another person entirely: a single mother, a writer, a woman in command - for better or worse - of her own life. Written with seductive elegance, humor and sexual candor, Off the King's Road speaks to all women of the possibilities of a life transformed by circumstance. "A compelling work that captures an era . . . Raphael's account of the English teetering between ingrained restraint and letting-it-all-hang-out is acute - hilarious and sad. Raphael is a talented writer, and she captures her heightened awareness of post marital-split life with refreshing vigor." - VeryShortList.com "At once a powerful coming-of-age memoir and a vivid study of London in the Swinging '60s." - Columbia Daily Spectator "What a journey! Raphael cavorts with everyone from tripping poets to Marlon Brando." - Marie Claire "Spirited . . . Eloquent." - East Hampton Star "Stylish" - Publishers Weekly "Savvy . . . Vibrant . . . An elegant memoir of a swinging time" - Kirkus Reviews "Immensely appealing" - Booklist "A delicious book - warm and witty - one that evokes the Swinging Sixties from a point of view rarely heard from." - Vivian Gornick, author of Fierce Attachments "[It has] acutely observed detail, a tactile immediacy, a cool, appraising eye, and humor. Plus, Swinging London! Phyllis Raphael has bid her memory speak, and we can only listen. It is a pleasure to do so." - David Rakoff, author of Don't Get Too Comfortable and Fraud "Her decision to stay in London with her children is the first she's made for herself in a long time and a turning point in this fascinating book. Her weeding through London's poseurs and hypochondriacs to find a good man is laugh-aloud funny. She emerges a full-fledged single woman." - The Los Angeles Times "Every sentence is constructed with enviable grace and economy . . . Rare and evocative." - Haven Kimmel, author of A Girl Named Zippy "Tender, hilarious and utterly charming." - Hilma Wolitzer, author of An Available Man "A sheer delight." - Lynne Sharon Schwartz, author of Two-Part Inventions "Hugely enjoyable, a chronicle of a feverish time as well as a riveting personal journey." - Molly Haskell, author of Love and Other Infectious Diseases "On the money and deliciously deadpan. It is also very, very smart." - Patricia Volk, author of Shocked: My Mother, Schiaparelli, and Me "As vivid and engrossing as any novel." - Frances Kiernan, author of Seeing Mary Plain: A Life of Mary McCarthy "Wonderful . . . witty, wry and irrepressible." - Elizabeth Kendall, author of American Daughter: Discovering My Mother

Book My Husband

  • Author : Anne Elliott
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd

  • ISBN : 1789013127
  • Pages : 152 pages

Download or read book My Husband written by Anne Elliott and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by real bloodstains and from detailed research comes a refreshingly different historical romance between a god-fearing woman and a known murderer My Husband: The Extraordinary History of Nicholas Brome combines fifteenth century imagery with themes of morality and forgiveness in a historical novel that takes inspiration from a true story of love and murder. It explores the life of Nicholas Brome, a Warwickshire lord with a violent, blood-soaked past, through the soul-searching of his third wife and widow, Lettice Catesby. Their residence, Baddesley Clinton, features prominently in the novel, and still stands as a historical property people can tour today - including Nicholas’ grave where he demands to be buried standing up. An enduring punishment - but is it a just one? When Lettice married Nicholas, 25 years her senior, she believed she knew all there was about his violent past and the murders he committed. He had pleaded to the King and the Pope for pardon and both Lettice and God had long ago forgiven him. But on his deathbed, Nicholas confesses once more and this time there can be no forgiveness. Shocked, desperate, Lettice examines all she knows of his life for an explanation: his childhood torn apart by the power struggles between Yorkists and Lancastrians, the promise and pain of his marriages, his love of family and his amends for his violent behaviour. An inspiring story of love and loyalty in the face of a very real fear of Hell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chariot commander Jehu is anointed king of Israel to strike down the House of Ahab. Drawn from the biblical account of 2 Kings 9 and 10, this fictional narrative recounts Jehu’s rebellion from his early years as a charioteer under King Ahab through his anointing by a prophet under Elisha and his assault against the royal house of Israel, told in the voices of Jehu, Queen Jezebel, King Ahab, Elijah, Elisha, Jezebel’s daughter Queen Athaliah and granddaughter Jehosheba, High Priest Jehoiada, King Ethbaal I of Tyre, and others. The union of Phoenician princess Jezebel and Ahab of Israel has combined the sea powers of Tyre and Sidon and the land power of Israel—a union that is being extended to Israel’s sister kingdom of Judah with the union of Jezebel’s daughter Athaliah with the king of Judah. The melding of Phoenicia, Israel, and Judah is reaching its tipping point as a harried prophet rushes into Jehu’s army camp and anoints him king of Israel. Jezebel, her prophets of Baal, her son King Joram of Israel, her daughter Queen Athaliah of Judah, and Athaliah’s daughter Jehosheba conspire together and against each other as Jehu’s rebellion threatens Jezebel’s realm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicles of Jean Froissart (1337-1410) are universally acknowledged as the most vivid and faithful account of 14th century events and ideas. This medieval collector of intelligence travelled widely from Scotland and Wales to France, Italy and the Netherlands, conversing with gentlemen of rank everywhere and developing a tremendous skill for persuading those about him to divulge their secrets. These Chronicles offer an unrivalled picture of the age of chivalry, drawn by a contemporary, with a verve that recalls Chaucer. Fresh, vivid, immediate and laced with a certain disrespect for the Establishment, they tell of acts of gallantry, tournaments, feasts and wars that make for fascinating reading, abetted by John Jolliffe's translation that renders Froissart into highly accessible modem English.

Book More Conversations on the Porch

Download or read book More Conversations on the Porch written by Beth Lindsay Templeton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Beth Lindsay Templeton originally created her screened porch as a sanctuary for herself. With its shabby furniture, potted flowers, and tinkling wind chimes, the porch soon became a haven not only for her, but also for other women who craved a sacred refuge to nurture their spirits. It is in this way that powerful conversations with women from the Bible came to Templetons pen, first in Conversations on the Porch and now with this sequel, More Conversations on the Porch. The women gracefully share their stories of faith so others might listen anew in their own worlds. As different women visit Templeton on her porch, scriptures come alive in fresh and insightful ways. The conversations she shares with Jezebel, the Witch of Endor, Joanna, Rhoda, and others not only address issues of women and of the world in general but also demonstrate that biblical womens stories and insights are as vital and important today as they were when their stories were first told. Conversations center on such common challenges as family, courage, compassion, risk taking, using your gifts, curiosity, Gods way, and above all, living in the power of Gods love and grace. With discussion questions and calls to action included, More Conversations on the Porch shares the refreshing and courageous voices of ancient women as they encourage others to embrace life as children of God and continue the inspiring conversations.
