This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria struck the Virgin Islands. Irma, the first to arrive on September 6, brought great destruction to many parts of St. Thomas and St. John, but the people of St. Croix received little or no damage. As a result, many of them sent items to St. Thomas and St. John to assist the people who were affected by the hurricane. However, just two weeks after Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria made landfall on St. Croix and destroyed some areas on that island. After the storms, life was tough. A lot of houses and businesses were damaged, so a large number of people were displaced. There was no electricity. There was no running water, and it was very difficult to make phone calls. But many federal agencies and other organizations came to assist the people of the United States Virgin Islands. In this book, forty-two people share their real-life experiences that resulted from Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Maria.

Book Strengthening Post Hurricane Supply Chain Resilience

Download or read book Strengthening Post Hurricane Supply Chain Resilience written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resilient supply chains are crucial to maintaining the consistent delivery of goods and services to the American people. The modern economy has made supply chains more interconnected than ever, while also expanding both their range and fragility. In the third quarter of 2017, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria revealed some significant vulnerabilities in the national and regional supply chains of Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The broad impacts and quick succession of these three hurricanes also shed light on the effectiveness of the nation's disaster logistics efforts during response through recovery. Drawing on lessons learned during the 2017 hurricanes, this report explores future strategies to improve supply chain management in disaster situations. This report makes recommendations to strengthen the roles of continuity planning, partnerships between civic leaders with small businesses, and infrastructure investment to ensure that essential supply chains will remain operational in the next major disaster. Focusing on the supply chains food, fuel, water, pharmaceutical, and medical supplies, the recommendations of this report will assist the Federal Emergency Management Agency as well as state and local officials, private sector decision makers, civic leaders, and others who can help ensure that supply chains remain robust and resilient in the face of natural disasters.

Book excerpt: As Hurricane Irma approached the United States and the great state of Florida after tearing through the Carribbean, residents did their best to prepare for the worst. What followed was a devastating storm beyond comprehension, with winds over 185 mph forging a path of destruction throughout the region. It caused a record-setting number of residents to evacuate, left 6.5 million people without power throughout the state, and left 10,000 homeless in the heavily damaged Florida Keys. Lives were lost and countless others were changed forever, with recovery and rebuilding efforts just beginning and sure to last years into the future. Amidst catastrophe, Irma also inspired acts of courage and hope from the many who found the will to triumph against incalculable odds. Seeking shelter and the basic necessities of life, those in Irma's path fought on to simply survive the harshest of conditions and help others do the same. This perseverance in the face of ruin is captured in Irma: A Story of Devastation, Courage, and Recovery, which features gripping stories and dozens of vivid full-color images, illustrating the power of the storm and the strength of the many who endured and shined during this tragedy. This book also includes coverage of the devastating storms that ravaged the island of Puerto Rico. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be donated to charities that support the communities affected by Hurricane Irma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Framed by the stories of Hurricane Maria evacuees, Tossed to the Wind is the gripping account of the wreckage, despair, and displacement left in the wake of one of the deadliest natural disasters on U.S. soil. It is also a story of hope and endurance as Puerto Ricans on the island shared what little they had and the diaspora in Florida offered refuge. Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico as a high-end Category 4, and the storm surge, flash flooding, and countless landslides created widespread devastation. One hundred percent of the island lost drinking water and electricity. More than 3 million U.S. citizens lived for months without power, making it the worst blackout in American history. The slow recovery led to a mass evacuation. Thousands gathered what they had left and traveled to Florida—already home to 1 million Puerto Ricans. In Tossed to the Wind, María Padilla and Nancy Rosado interview Puerto Ricans from all walks of life who now live in Orlando and Kissimmee, who fight every day to pick up the pieces of their world after Hurricane Maria. In their own words, evacuees describe families living temporarily out of motels, parents anxious about providing for their children, children starting new schools, and everyone worried about the families and friends they left behind. Told from the midst of chaos and incomprehensible loss, these are the stories—filled with pain and wisdom, sadness and laughter—that showcase the strength and resolve of Puerto Ricans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fearless necessary reporting . . . Klein exposes the ‘battle of utopias’ that is currently unfolding in storm-ravaged Puerto Rico” (Junot Díaz, author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao) “We are in a fight for our lives. Hurricanes Irma and María unmasked the colonialism we face in Puerto Rico, and the inequality it fosters, creating a fierce humanitarian crisis. Now we must find a path forward to equality and sustainability, a path driven by communities, not investors. And this book explains, with careful and unbiased reporting, only the efforts of our community activists can answer the paramount question: What type of society do we want to become and who is Puerto Rico for?” —Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico In the rubble of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans and ultrarich “Puertopians” are locked in a pitched struggle over how to remake the island. In this vital and startling investigation, bestselling author and activist Naomi Klein uncovers how the forces of shock politics and disaster capitalism seek to undermine the nation’s radical, resilient vision for a “just recovery.” All royalties from the sale of this book in English and Spanish go directly to JunteGente, a gathering of Puerto Rican organizations resisting disaster capitalism and advancing a fair and healthy recovery for their island. “Klein chronicles the extraordinary grassroots resistance by the Puerto Rican people against neoliberal privatization and Wall Street greed in the aftermath of the island’s financial meltdown, of hurricane devastation, and of Washington’s imposition of an outside control board over the most important U.S. colony.” —Juan González, cohost of Democracy Now! and author of Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America
