Book Hurricanes and Historic House Museums Disaster Planning

Download or read book Hurricanes and Historic House Museums Disaster Planning written by Jennifer Fippinger and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disaster preparedness plans play a significant role in protecting historic structures during a hurricane situation. In recent years an increasing number of hurricanes and tropical storms hit Florida, as well as the United States' Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. During the past five years storms such as Katrina and Ivan decimated coastal cities and towns. Such destruction cost people their livelihoods, their homes, and, in the worst cases, their lives. In the museum and historic preservation communities, the toll of these storms has been particularly significant. As a result of hurricanes, every state along the eastern coast from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, to Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina lost historical structures. Informal accounts suggested that museum size and funding had a major impact on hurricane disaster preparedness procedures that each institution employs. This research set out to discover how size variables influenced the disaster preparedness plans of museums and to propose common guidelines that could be used for historic house museums of a variety of sizes.

One goal behind this research was to discover how size variables influenced the disaster preparedness plans of museums. These variables included physical size of the property, size of historic house, value of collection in historic house, number of historic buildings on property, the budget size of the museum, amount of improvements on the historic house, total number of museum staff members, number of historic house staff members, and number of staff members for disaster plan execution. A second goal was to propose common guidelines that could be used for historic house museums of a variety of sizes.

Book Building an Emergency Plan

Download or read book Building an Emergency Plan written by and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000-02-03 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building an Emergency Plan provides a step-by-step guide that a cultural institution can follow to develop its own emergency preparedness and response strategy. This workbook is divided into three parts that address the three groups generally responsible for developing and implementing emergency procedures—institution directors, emergency preparedness managers, and departmental team leaders—and discuss the role each should play in devising and maintaining an effective emergency plan. Several chapters detail the practical aspects of communication, training, and forming teams to handle the safety of staff and visitors, collections, buildings, and records. Emergencies covered include natural events such as earthquakes or floods, as well as human-caused emergencies, such as fires that occur during renovation. Examples from the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, the Museo de Arte Popular Americano in Chile, the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, and the Seattle Art Museum show how cultural institutions have prepared for emergencies relevant to their sites, collections, and regions.

Book Historic House Museums

Download or read book Historic House Museums written by Sherry Butcher-Younghans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic house museums can be found in nearly every city in the United States and Canada. These are the homes of the earliest settlers, statesmen, frontiersmen, great writers, artists, architects, and industrial magnates. These are the places, carefully saved and preserved, that represent a cultural heritage. Despite their popularity, it is not uncommon to find museums that are in poor repair, their collections neglected and their staffs grossly overworked. Many are run by well-meaning and hard-working volunteers who have little or no professional training. Often they survive on shoestring budgets and are able to present only limited programs. Serving both as a hands-on guide and reference, this book examines these problems, offering practical advice and solutions which can be easily implemented. Its useful "lessons" include governance, where to find help, care of collections, conservation, security, and interpretation--all designed to increase the professionalism of the historic house museum.
