Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although hurricanes are common over the eastern Pacific and annually are seen in parts of the central Pacific, they are not routinely found over Hawaii. Only four of these have impacted the Aloha State since 1950. Hurricane Iniki, with winds up to 160 MPH, was by far the strongest and most destructive. This storm also completed a "clean sweep" of National Weather Service (NWS) offices responsible for issuing hurricane warnings. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Coral Gables, Florida (Hurricane Andrew), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) in Guam (Typhoon Omar), and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) in Honolulu, Hawaii (Hurricane Iniki) were all struck by strong hurricanes within a 2-month span. Relying on one geostationary satellite providing satisfactory, but less than ideal, coverage and an extremely sparse surface data network, NWS forecasters and meteorological technicians across the state provided excellent warning service to residents and visitors alike"--Preface

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 22, 1992, at the request of the Mayor of Kauai County, the Federal Coordinating Officer for the Iniki disaster tasked the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA's) Federal Insurance Administration (FIA) to assemble a team of experts to assess the performance of buildings. The team was tasked with surveying the performance of primarily residential structures under wind and water forces generated during Hurricane Iniki. The goal of this effort is to provide guidance and offer recommendations for reducing damage from future hurricanes. This goal is best met through learning from both failures and successes of building performance. During the field assessment, the team investigated primarily structural systems (i.e., systems in a building that resist lateral and vertical forces. For all buildings, the performance of exterior architectural systems, such as roofing, windows, and doors was analyzed. The analysis also included the effects of windborne and waterborne debris and the quality of construction and materials. The majority of building types observed were one- and two-story, wood-frame, single-family and multi-family residential structures. However, pre-engineered steel commercial and industrial buildings, as well as resort hotels and condominiums constructed of reinforced concrete and masonry, were also examined. This report includes detailed engineering discussions of building failure modes and successful building performance. It also provides detailed recommendations for enhancing building performance under hurricane and flood conditions.

Book excerpt: From killer storms to their implications for the insurance premiums of U.S. residents, this much-awaited update explores the ecological, social, and economic consequences of hurricanes and their effects on both coastal and inland areas. In September 1776 the so-called "Hurricane of Independence" hit Canada and the northeastern United States, leading to 4,170 deaths. In 1900 around 8,000 perished in the Galveston Hurricane and the resulting tidal surge. Coastal defenses, early warning systems, and evacuation procedures have improved enormously. However, hurricanes still pose a potentially devastating threat to life and property, especially in coastal regions of the United States and the Caribbean. What causes these extreme storms? How can we best defend ourselves? Hurricanes: A Reference Handbook explores the historical, ecological, economic, and social dimensions of hurricanes in North America. Synthesizing literature from a wide range of authoritative sources, this book is an invaluable guide to hurricanes and their impact and is essential reading for students, scientists, mariners, and coastal residents alike.
