Download or read book Surface Wind Analyses and Storm surge Effects of Hurricane Emily on the Outer Banks of North Carolina written by Andrew W. Garcia and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface meteorological and coastal storm-surge data for Hurricane Emily (22 August - 6 Septemher 1993) are presented. These data include maximum surface wind speed and minimum surface central pressure histories, surface wind analyses at times of Emily's closest approach to land, 8 hr prior, and 4 hr following; and storm surge data in both tabular and graphic form for the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The report documents Emily's effects in the primary area of impact. Emily's coastal effects are noteworthy in that inundation of the barrier island system was due to high waters from Pamlico Sound rather than the Atlantic Ocean. (MM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From epidemics and earthquakes to tornadoes and tidal waves, the overwhelming power of Nature never ceases to instil humankind with both terror and awe. As natural disasters continue to claim human lives and wreak havoc in their wake, Perils of a Restless Planet examines our attempts to understand and anticipate such phenomena. Drawing upon case studies from ancient to present times, this book focuses on scientific inquiry, technological innovation and public policy to provide a lucid and riveting look at natural disasters. While shedding light on the elusive quality of Nature and the limits scientific study and laboratory replication impose on our understanding of her mercurial ways, the author extrapolates from the history of science to suggest how we may someday learn to warn and protect vulnerable populations on our small and tempestuous planet. Anyone interested in the power of Nature will find this book compelling and informative.

Book North Carolina s Hurricane History

Download or read book North Carolina s Hurricane History written by Jay Barnes and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extending far out into the Atlantic, the coast of North Carolina has been battered by countless hurricanes through the centuries. Many have overwashed the state's barrier islands and wrecked coastal communities. Great hurricanes like Hazel in 1954 and Hugo in 1989 have left legacies of destruction, but until now little has been written on the state's encounters with these and other fierce storms. North Carolina's Hurricane History is a richly illustrated record of more than fifty hurricanes known to have struck the Tar Heel state from the days of the first European explorers through hurricane Emily in the summer of 1993. Jay Barnes examined newspaper reports, National Weather Service records, and eyewitness descriptions to compile this fascinating chronicle. More than 200 photographs, maps, and illustrations document these hurricanes, showing the people, places, and unusual events associated with the storms. Storm track maps allow comparison of the numerous hurricanes that have struck the state. Up-to-date information on hurricane preparedness and evacuation helps to make this striking history a valuable educational resource as well.

Book The North Carolina Shore and Its Barrier Islands

Download or read book The North Carolina Shore and Its Barrier Islands written by Orrin H. Pilkey and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Carolina Shore and Its Barrier Islands is the latest volume in the series, Living with the Shore. Replacing an earlier volume, this thoroughly new book provides a diverse guide to one of America's most popular shorelines. As is true for all books in the series, it is based on the premise that understanding the changing nature of beaches and barrier islands is essential if we are to preserve them for future generations. Evidence that the North Carolina shore is changing is never hard to find, but recently the devastation wrought by Hurricane Fran and the perilous situation of the historic lighthouse at Cape Hatteras have reminded all concerned of the fragility of this coast. Arguing for a policy of intelligent development, one in which residential and commercial structures meet rather than confront the changing nature of the shore, the authors have included practical information on hazards of many kinds--storms, tides, floods, erosion, island migration, and earthquakes. Diagrams and photographs clearly illustrate coastal processes and aid in understanding the impact of hurricanes and northeasters, wave and current dynamics, as well as pollution and other environmental destruction due to overdevelopment. A chapter on estuaries provides related information on the shores of back barrier areas that are growing in popularity for recreational residences. Risk maps focus on the natural hazards of each island and together with construction guidelines provide a basis for informed island management. Lastly, the dynamics of coastal politics and management are reviewed through an analysis of the controversies over the decision to move the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and a proposed effort to stabilize Oregon Inlet. From the natural and historic perspective of the opening chapters to the regional discussions of individual barrier islands, this book is both a primer on coastal processes for the first time visitor as well as a guide to hazard identification for property owners.
