Book No More Mean Girls

Download or read book No More Mean Girls written by Katie Hurley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Queen Bees and Wannabes for the elementary and middle school set, child and adolescent psychotherapist Katie Hurley shows parents of young girls how to nip mean girl behavior in the bud. Once upon a time, mean girls primarily existed in high school, while elementary school-aged girls spent hours at play and enjoyed friendships without much drama. But in this fast-paced world in which young girls are exposed to negative behaviors on TV and social media from the moment they enter school, they are also becoming caught up in social hierarchies much earlier. No More Mean Girls is a guide for parents to help their young daughters navigate tricky territories such as friendship building, creating an authentic self, standing up for themselves and others, and expressing themselves in a healthy way. The need to be liked by others certainly isn't new, but this generation of girls is growing up in an age when the "like" button shows the world just how well-liked they are. When girls acknowledge that they possess positive traits that make them interesting, strong, and likeable, however, the focus shifts and their self-confidence soars; "likes" lose their importance. This book offers actionable steps to help parents empower young girls to be kind, confident leaders who work together and build each other up.

Book excerpt: My name is Heidi Larson Hurley And these are my 500 drawings. This #CoronaArtChallenge adventure started March 14, 2020 at the beginning stages of the Covid pandemic. Schools, businesses, restaurants all closed. The world shut down.I lost physical and emotional contact with my students, friends and family, someway I wanted to reach out, share what was going on in my life, imagination and mind. I thought I would document every day and motivate myself to do "something" to share with whoever cared to see.The purpose of my #coronaartchallenge was to express my own fears, emotions and humor about the unknown, but also to motivate others to share art.People shared artwork with me. Students past and present would send photos of what they were working on, friends would share a photo or drawing. Favorites were when someone would share a photo of my drawing brightly colored in.This made me smile.I honestly thought that the pandemic would last a few weeks. I started with an old black bound sketchbook with faded pages and thought I would repurpose it, I had a golf pencil, eraser and a black pen. Little did I know that I would end up with 5 filled black sketchbooks, go through 4 dozen pens, 2 pencils and 2 erasers. What did I learn?I learned that no matter what your situation, you can always find something to share? and people will react. They might "Like" what you do? send a comment about how it made a connection. I also learned that not everyone is going to "Like" what you say or do.. That's OK.. Enjoy, Color, Share and Reflect. That is what this book is about.Peace to You.Stay Healthy and #DoArtLove,Heidi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. And if I should die before I awake, I pray the popular attend my wake. Charlotte Usher feels practically invisible at school, and then one day she really is invisible. Even worse: she's dead. And all because she choked on a gummy bear. But being dead doesn't stop Charlotte from wanting to be popular; it just makes her more creative about achieving her goal. If you thought high school was a matter of life or death, wait till you see just how true that is. In this satirical, yet heartfelt novel, Hurley explores the invisibility we all feel at some times and the lengths we'll go to be seen. Praise for ghostgirl: * Polished dark-and-deadpan humor, it's a natural fit with Gen Y, too." --Publishers Weekly (starred review) * "[Tonya] beats out witty teen-speak like a punk-band drummer, keeping the narrative fast-paced and fun yet thought-provokingly heartwarming. Goofy, ghastly, intelligent, electrifying." --Kirkus (starred review) *"Tim Burton and Edgar Allan Poe devotees will die for this fantastic, phantasmal read." --School Library Journal (starred review) * "Readers with a taste for black humor and satire will feast on Hurley's crisp, wise dialogue. Anticipate a well deserved cult following." --VOYA (starred review) "Written with deadpan wit...this is a 'Wonderful Life'-like tale." -New York Post "A sincere (and humorous) exploration of how we all feel invisible at one time or another...perfect read." -CosmoGirl
