Book excerpt: From the breaks of the Snake River to the breakers of the Pacific, from the Outback to the dunes, from the Siskiyous to the Wallowas, Oregon has a landscape as diverse as it is beautiful. And there is no better way to see it, to live it, than with a good pair of boots and gun or bow in hand. In Hunting Oregon, the authors (Gary Lewis, Scott Haugen and Duane Dungannon) take you afield to hunt Roosevelt and Rocky Mountain elk, blacktail deer, mule deer, Columbia whitetails, bighorn sheep and more. Follow along on hunts for chukar, pheasant and wild turkey. Discover when and where to hunt. Find patterns in travel and behavior and learn how game animals make use of cover. Learn how to plan the hunt, to take trophy animals, to turn the harvest into delicious and nutritious meals and prepare your prize for taxidermy. Hunting Oregon is about the pursuit of waterfowl, upland birds, small game, predators and big game in the Beaver State. It is also about a way of life, a passion shared by men and women, a passion we pass to the next generation. And it is the celebration of the chase and the solitary challenge, the time spent with friends or family around the campfire.

Book The Oregon Big Game Resource

Download or read book The Oregon Big Game Resource written by William Galen Brown and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the obvious importance of the Oregon big game resource to Oregon citizens, economic data regarding the actual magnitude of net and gross values have been lacking. Thus an attempt has been made in this thesis to supply the missing information by estimating the gross economic value and by formulating a demand model from which the net economic value of the Oregon big game resource can be derived. The gross economic value of the Oregon big game resource, including both the investment in hunting and related equipment and hunting trip expenses, was obtained from two questionnaires mailed to a random sample of Oregon big hunters during the summer and fall of 1968. It was estimated that hunter families averaged about $239 per year for hunting and associated equipment. A total investment by all Oregon hunters of $44.6 million in 1968 was estimated. It was also estimated that hunter families averaged about $118.70 on big game hunting trips during 1968. Total big game hunting trip expenses for all Oregon hunters were estimated to be $18.6 million. Thus, combining investment in hunting and associated equipment with total trip expenses gave a total estimated expenditure of $63.2 million by Oregon big game hunters in 1968. Net economic value (which is defined in this study as the potential value of the resource if the opportunity to hunt big game animals were a marketable commodity) was sensitive to the specification of the demand model employed. In this study, the two most important explanatory variables were average trip expenses and distance to the hunting region. As compared to traditional distance zone estimation procedures, estimation based upon individual observations was much more efficient, and better separated the monetary versus the non monetary costs of distance. Several algebraic forms of the demand equation were fitted for each of the five hunting regions of Oregon. However, best overall results were obtained from the exponential demand function, fitted by logarithmic transformation, but corrected for bias in terms of the real numbers. One measure of net economic value (net revenue to a non discriminating monopolist) gave an estimated value of the Oregon big game resource of about $4 million. However, consumer surplus, which is more generally accepted by economists, gave an estimated net4 economic value of about $11 million for the Oregon big game resource in 1968. The $11 million net economic value is considered to be a conservative estimate since expenditures for hunting and related equipment were not included. It is thought that the estimation of net economic values for each of the five hunting regions makes the study more useful from the viewpoint of big game management and resource allocation in Oregon.

Book Hunting Fishing and Environmental Virtue

Download or read book Hunting Fishing and Environmental Virtue written by Charles James List and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do hunting and fishing lead to the development of environmental virtues? This question is at the heart of philosopher Charles List's engaging study, which provides a defense of field sports when they are practiced and understood in an ethical manner. In his argument, List examines the connection between certain activities and the development of virtue in the classical sources, such as Aristotle and Plato. He then explores the work of Aldo Leopold, identifying three key environmental virtues that field sports instill in practitioners in the kind of conservation advocated by Leopold and others. After reviewing several powerful philosophical objections to his viewpoint, List considers the future of environmental sportsmanship. He suggests that, in order to incorporate a revived connection between field sports and environmental virtue, the practice of hunting and angling must undergo changes, including shifts that would impact hunter education, civic engagement, the role of firearms, our understanding of "game" animals, and alliances with other sorts of outdoor recreation. Hunting, Fishing, and Environmental Virtue will appeal to academics interested in the ethical issues surrounding hunting and fishing, professionals in wildlife management, and hunters and anglers interested in conservation.
