Book Structured Worlds

Download or read book Structured Worlds written by Aubrey Cannon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunter-gatherer societies are constrained by their environment and the technologies available to them. However, until now the role of culture in foraging communities has not been widely considered. 'Structured Worlds' examines the role of cosmology, values, and perceptions in the archaeological histories of hunter-fisher-gatherers. The essays examine a range of cultures - Mesolithic Europe, Siberia, Jomon Japan, the Northwest Coast, the northern Plains, and High Arctic of North America - to show the role of conceptual frameworks in subsistence and settlement, technology, mobility, migration, demography, and social organization. Spanning from the early Holocene period to the present day, 'Structured Worlds' draws on archaeology and ethnography to explore the role of beliefs, ritual, and social values in the interaction between foragers and their physical and social landscape. Material culture, animal bones and settlement patterns show that the behaviours of hunter-gatherers were shaped as much by cultural concepts as by material need.

Book The Mesolithic Hunters of the Trentino

Download or read book The Mesolithic Hunters of the Trentino written by Royston Clark and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2000 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a contribution to the understanding of Mesolithic settlement and subsistence change through a regional case study of archaeological data from the Trentino, a mountain region in northern Italy. Excavations in this region have identified rock-shelter deposits extending throughout the Mesolithic period, containing comparatively well-preserved animal bone assemblages as well as lithic material. The basis of this study is that in order to understand hunter-gatherer sites, it is necessary to examine both animal bone assemblages and lithic material, in the form of stone tools and the residue associated with their manufacture. These represent the main archaeological evidence recorded from valley-bottom rock-shelter and open-air high-altitude sites in the Trentino. The combined study of animal bones and lithics, together with long-term and spatial perspectives, provides a framework for then extending the scale of analysis from site-based to regional in scale.

Book Subsistence Settlement Systems and Intersite Variability in the Moroiso Phase of the Early Jomon Period of Japan

Download or read book Subsistence Settlement Systems and Intersite Variability in the Moroiso Phase of the Early Jomon Period of Japan written by Junko Habu and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the settlement patterns and intersite variability in lithic assemblages of Early Jomon (ca. 5000 BP) hunter-gatherers in Japan. A model is proposed that links regional settlement patterns and intersite lithic assemblage variability to residential mobility. The results of this study suggest that the Early Jomon people were not sedentary, as previously assumed, but instead moved their residential basis seasonally. The implications of this result are discussed in the context of the development of hunter-gatherer cultural complexity in general and the course of Japanese prehistory in particular.
