Book excerpt: Born the runt in a litter of hardy sled dogs, and abandoned in a nearby mining town, young Hunter had no way of knowing if he would survive his first cold night all alone, let alone the many hazardous paths down which his life’s journey would take him. Luckily for him, though removed abruptly from the warmth and security of his mother’s love, he would not be left out in the cold for long. When a young boy named Edwin notices the small, shivering pup and takes him home, a new love quickly blossoms, and together, they spend years together in joyful, peaceful enjoyment of their simple lives, secure in the knowledge that nothing would ever change. Unfortunately, war is almost as inevitable as change, and when Edwin, now a strapping young man, is called on to fight, he must leave his best friend behind with his parents on their small farm. As hard a goodbye as that was, it isn’t until the battlelines encroach on their home that Hunter is once again thrust into the cold and darkness of the unknown, finding himself at the mercy of the wild. Fleeing for his life from hungry attackers, he finds himself deep in the woods, fully lost, with no way to find his way home and no idea how to survive. Luckily, nature is a strict teacher, its brutal lessons passed or failed in tests of determination and blood. But even though survival might be the wild’s ultimate goal, the only thing that matters to Hunter, the only thing that keeps him going through everything he is forced to confront, is the thought of finding his way back home one day, back to Edwin and the love and warmth of his truest friend.

Book Evolutionary Intelligence

Download or read book Evolutionary Intelligence written by Rolf W. Frohlich and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-04-27 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human nature holds the intelligence of life. It provides a psychology that is much stronger, more effective and more reliable than the psychology society teaches us. This psychology taps into the evolutionary survival experience of our species, which occupied most of human history. It was the period when the species evolved and our ancestor survived as a hunter and gatherer. More than 99% of human history is encoded in the DNA of our genes and lastingly etched into the human psyche. Our natural psychology, the human psyche, is the result of evolutionary adaptation. The psyche provides the genetic capacity for behavioral, mental and spiritual adaptation. It supports the gratification of our needs. And it contains the blueprint of human life. The book is about human nature and human survival. Human nature, that is, the human psyche, has survival value. The book introduces a metapsychology that refers to the Jungian archetypes and the survival capabilities inherent in the psyche. Like all living organisms and forms of life, we possess an innate capacity for survival. By awakening this evolutionary intelligence, we gain access to the primordial power and wisdom of the archetypal psyche. This innate psychology transcends the cultural conditioning that has shaped us all and erects an entirely different reference system making us look at life in a new way. We live in a world that reflects human nature and we are well equipped to survive in it. Beyond that, there is also something in us that resonates with a larger context. Our psychological constitution relates us to the outer realities of nature and cosmos. It is in this sense that we partake in the evolution of life on this planet and in the larger design of a cosmic universe. This primary psyche is shared by all humanity as part of a common biological and psychological history.

Book The Ethics of Eating Animals

Download or read book The Ethics of Eating Animals written by Bob Fischer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intensive animal agriculture wrongs many, many animals. Philosophers have argued, on this basis, that most people in wealthy Western contexts are morally obligated to avoid animal products. This book explains why the author thinks that’s mistaken. He reaches this negative conclusion by contending that the major arguments for veganism fail: they don’t establish the right sort of connection between producing and eating animal-based foods. Moreover, if they didn’t have this problem, then they would have other ones: we wouldn’t be obliged to abstain from all animal products, but to eat strange things instead—e.g., roadkill, insects, and things left in dumpsters. On his view, although we have a collective obligation not to farm animals, there is no specific diet that most individuals ought to have. Nevertheless, he does think that some people are obligated to be vegans, but that’s because they’ve joined a movement, or formed a practical identity, that requires that sacrifice. This book argues that there are good reasons to make such a move, albeit not ones strong enough to show that everyone must do likewise.

Book Regenerating England

Download or read book Regenerating England written by Christopher Lawrence and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the inter-war years there was much debate in Britain as to whether the best path to post-World War I regeneration would be found in the promises of science and technology, in continued and increased efficiency, in specialization and professionalization or whether the future of the nation depended on a rediscovery of older (and more authentic) ways of doing things, on a defiant anti-modernism. This debate on Britain's future was often conducted in terms of Englishness and the rebirth of a lost, more spiritual, village England. However, 'Englishness' also entered inter-war social thinking through eclectic assimilations of diverse traditions. Prominent themes in the discourses on Britain's post-war regeneration include national character, citizenship, fitness, education, utopia, community and so on. The chapters in the present volume address these themes and break new ground by examining debates well known in political and literary history through their relations to science, medicine, architecture and ideas of social and political 'health'.
