Download or read book Migration Harvest and Population Dynamics of Mourning Doves Banded in the Central Management Unit 1967 77 written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A banding program for mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) was conducted by the 14 Central Management Unit (CMU) States and the U.S. FIsh and Wildlife Service during 1967-74. Banding and recovery records, as well as data from annual call-count and harvest surveys, were subsequently analyzed by a subcommittee of the Central Migratory Shore and Upland Game Bird Technical Committee. This paper presents information on mourning dove habitat, hunting regulations, and harvest in the CMU; distribution and derviation of band recoveries in and from CMU; distribution of mourning dove harvest in Mexico and Central America; chronology of migration; survival and recovery rates; effects of hunting on CMU mourning dove populations; and indirect nationwide mourning dove population estimates.

Book Ecology and Management of the Mourning Dove

Download or read book Ecology and Management of the Mourning Dove written by Thomas S. Baskett and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 1993 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicely published (apparently with subsidy) by the Wildlife Management Institute, Washington, D.C. Comprehensively deals with the most numerous, widespread, and heavily hunted of North American gamebirds. Among the topics covered in 29 contributions: classification and distributions, migration, nesting, reproductive strategy, growth and maturation, feeding habits, diseases, survey procedures, population trends, care of captive mourning doves, and hunting. The final chapter identifies research and management needs. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Bird Ecology and Conservation

Download or read book Bird Ecology and Conservation written by William J. Sutherland and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-06-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to outline the main methods and techniques available to ornithologists. A general shortage of information about available techniques is greatly hindering progress in avian ecology and conservation. Currently this sort of information is disparate and difficult to locate with much of it widely dispersed in books, journals and grey literature. Sutherland and his editorial team bring together in a single authoritative source all the ornithological techniques the avian community will ever need. For use by graduate students, researchers and practising conservationists worldwide. Bird Ecology and Conservation is the first title in a new series of practical handbooks which include titles focusing on specific taxonomic groups as well as those describing broader themes and subjects. The series editor is William J Sutherland.

Book Mourning Dove Status Report 1966

Download or read book Mourning Dove Status Report 1966 written by and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nationwide dove population indexes presented in the 1966 Mourning Dove Status Report were obtained, using several important in data gathering and analysis. Data analyses suggest that 1966 dove populations have fully recovered from the 1965 decline in the Eastern and Central Management Units, and partially recovered in the Western Management Unit. Present populations approximate those of the 1956-1965, 10-year means in all units.

Book Mourning Dove Management Units

Download or read book Mourning Dove Management Units written by William Henry Kiel and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tentative mourning dove management units for the United States are outlined on the basis of an analysis of bandings during the 1953-57 period. The three units -- Eastern, Central, and Western -- most nearly meet the criteria of an ideal management unit: a unit that produces the doves it harvests and does not produce doves that are harvested by other units. As an average for the three management units, 95 percent of a unit's hunting kill is produced inside the unit and 96 percent of a unit's harvested production is shot inside the unit or in Mexico and Central America. Hence the three units are practically independent of each other. These conclusions must be considered only tentative because they are based on insufficient band recoveries and on weighting procedures that need to be evaluated through further research.

Book Arizona Dove Wing Survey 1964

Download or read book Arizona Dove Wing Survey 1964 written by Lytle Houston Blankenship and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first large-scale effort to collect dove wings by mail was made in 1964, in Arizona. Each of 2,356 dove hunters ws sent 10 wing envelopes with instructions for recording data and handling wings. A total of 992 hunters submitted 22,362 wings in 2,349 envelopes that included mourning dove (Zenaidura maroura) and white-winged doves (Zenaida asiatica). The survey yielded information on (1) age ratios of the Arizona dove harvest ; (2) the chronologic and geographic distribution of the kill within the State ; and (3) the feasibility of using a wing survey to obtain reliable age ratios and kill data. The weighted kill for Arizona was 676,974 mourning doves and 182,711 white-winged doves. The young:adult age ratio in the kill of mouning doves was 0.83:1, which was abnormally low. Correction for differential vulnerability by use of banding data raised the ratio to 1.80:1. This low age ratio probably resulted from migration of immatures to little-hunted areas before the September hunting season. The age ratio in the kill of white-winged doves was 1.78:1. Most hunters hunted within their county of residence. Hunter numbers and dove kill related closely to both human and dove populations.

Book Mourning Dove Recoveries from Mexico

Download or read book Mourning Dove Recoveries from Mexico written by Lytle Houston Blankenship and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of 37,000 reports of mourning dove band recoveries in the files of the Migratory Bird Populations Station on October 30, 1967, 1,120 came from Mexico, and half of those were from Jalisco and Michoacan, both in west-central Mexico; Jalisco alone accounted for nearly a third. Few recoveries were reported from the area between the U.S. border and mid-Mexico. Generally, lower proportions of total recoveries were reported from Mexico under the current pre-hunting season banding program for flying birds than were reported from the nestling dove banding program of the 1950's. Bandings in the northern U.S. States produced proportionally more recoveries than bandings in the southern U.S. States. Doves banded over diverse areas of the United States were harvested in common migration with wintering areas in Mexico. Possible explanations of the heterogeneous distribution of recoveries throughout Mexico are discussed. Of the banded birds for which "how obtained" was known, 83.5 percent were reported as shot (or killed) and only 3.2 percent reported as captured or trapped. Among 658 persons who gave their name and residence when they reported bands, 95.7 percent had typically Spanish surnames and were residents of Mexico. Depending upon actual banding reporting rates and the representativeness of the banding data analyzed, the Mexican dove harvest may equal or exceed harvests in leading U.S. States. Factors influencing band reporting rates must be resolved before Mexico's importance as a harvest area can be accurately determined.
