Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cashman's Seeds The Minnesota Univeorsity Agricultural College has again come to the front in producing a squash that We believe IS superior to any winter squash grown in the United States. It is specially valuable for northern sections, where the late Green Hubbard Often fails to properly mature. This variety matures from 2 to 3 weeks earlier than our Green Hubbard and the quality is considered superior. You can be sure that the Kitchenette will produce good ripe squash any season even though we have an early frost. The fruit is about half the size of the large Hubbard, but what they lack 1n size they make up in number. In the spring of 1922 the Minnesota University alloted a small quantity of seed to a few actual growers in Minne sota. We were fortunate 1n securing some of this seed. The seed we offer was grown on our own land from this Minnesota stock. We offered this squash seed to our customers last year for the first time, and the letters we have received from many customers who tried some of this seed show that it is a wonderful squash. Book Buchanan s Seeds 1928 Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Buchanan's Seeds, 1928 No crop responds more readily than Beans to good soil and cultiva tion. A light, rich, well drained loam which was manured for the previous crop is the most desirable? If too rank manure is used it is apt to make the plant run too much to vine. Beans are very sensitive to both cold and wet and it is useless to plant them before the ground has become dry and warm. The largest returns will result from planting in drills from two to three feet apart. Cover the seed one and one-half to two inches deep and thin the young plants three to six inches apart in the row. If planted in hills, make the hills about two feet apart each way. For succession. Plant at intervals of one to two weeks till midsummer. The plants up to the time of blossoming should have frequent shallow cultivation, but any mutilation of the roots by cultivation after the plants come into bloom is likely to cause the blos soms to blast and so cut off the crop. Cultivation should always be very shallow and it is useless to expect a crop from a field so poorly prepared as to need deep stirring after planting.
