Book excerpt: The Yorkshire Dales is well known for its historic links with the lead mining industry particularly during the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, but other metals like silver, zinc and copper have been extracted in smaller quantities. Aggregates like limestone and sandstone are still being quarried. Chert was quarried in Swaledale and the adjacent Arkengarthdale from c.1901 to c.1950 when the market for chert suddenly collapsed.Up to 1922 the principal chert quarrying was at Fremington Edge quarry situated above Reeth in Swaledale, but in 1922 a second chert quarry started in Arkengarthdale on Mouldside.Whilst walking Mouldside for many years and having read the available accounts, there appeared to be some aspects that did not quite fit or had not been described. Unfortunately we can no longer ask the men who must have toiled long and arduous hours here, but I hope this short report (more a pictorial record) will add an extra layer to what we know, or at least stimulate further discussion.

Book excerpt: This volume features forty-two essays written in honor of Joseph Agassi. It explores the work and legacy of this influential philosopher, an exciting and challenging advocate of critical rationalism. Throughout six decades of stupendous intellectual activity, Agassi called attention to rationality as the very starting point of every notable philosophical way of life. The essays present Agassi’s own views on critical rationalism. They also develop and expand upon his work in new and provocative ways. The authors include Agassi's most notable pupils, friends, and colleagues. Overall, their contributions challenge the received view on a variety of issues concerning science, religion, and education. Readers will find well-reasoned arguments on such topics as the secular problem of evil, religion and critical thinking, liberal democratic educational communities, democracy and constitutionalism, and capitalism at a crossroad.“/div>divTo Joseph Agassi, philosophy is the practice of reason, where reason is understood as the relentless search for criticisms of the best available explanations that we have to the world around us. This book not only honors one of the most original philosophers of science today. It also offers readers insights into a school of thought that lies at the heart of philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument thirty-five miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas, celebrated its fiftieth anniversary as a federal entity in 2015, but until now, there has not been a single comprehensive book written about the site. Beryl Cain Hughes, who has long been fascinated by the site, celebrates the history and natural beauty of what had been the one and only national monument in Texas for several decades in this collection of essays. She answers questions such as the following: Who were the people who lived near the quarries? Why was the flint more valuable than gold? What did these people eat, wear, and do? What were their most significant accomplishments? The author also celebrates the accomplishments of Floyd V. Studer, who was the first person to recognize the importance of a hill pockmarked with the pits that people dug in their search for good flint. He would spend his life dedicated to the site and its preservation. Explore the history of some of the earliest people to venture into the Western hemisphere who dug flint, set up trade exchanges, established villages, and fought to survive with Gone to Rock and Ruin.
