Download or read book Mystics and Messiahs written by Philip Jenkins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mystics and Messiahs--the first full account of cults and anti-cult scares in American history--Philip Jenkins shows that, contrary to popular belief, cults were by no means an invention of the 1960s. In fact, most of the frightening images and stereotypes surrounding fringe religious movements are traceable to the mid-nineteenth century when Mormons, Freemasons, and even Catholics were denounced for supposed ritualistic violence, fraud, and sexual depravity. But America has also been the home of an often hysterical anti-cult backlash. Jenkins offers an insightful new analysis of why cults arouse such fear and hatred both in the secular world and in mainstream churches, many of which were themselves originally regarded as cults. He argues that an accurate historical perspective is urgently needed if we are to avoid the kind of catastrophic confrontation that occurred in Waco or the ruinous prosecution of imagined Satanic cults that swept the country in the 1980s. Without ignoring genuine instances of aberrant behavior, Mystics and Messiahs goes beyond the vast edifice of myth, distortion, and hype to reveal the true characteristics of religious fringe movements and why they inspire such fierce antagonism.

Book The Mystics Ascetics and Saints of India

Download or read book The Mystics Ascetics and Saints of India written by John Campbell Oman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystics, Ascetics, and Saints of India: A Study of Sadhuism, With an Account of the Yogis, Sanyasis, Bairagis, and Other Strange Hindu Sectarians Biologists teach that the body of every human being is an aggregation of various and innumerable protoplasmic cells which are ever undergoing changes, constructive and destructive. And yet we can plainly see that each man, though perceptibly changing with the passing years, persistently retains to the end a marked individuality, together with corporeal and mental characteristics peculiarly his own. So, too, is it with each race of men and the comparatively short-lived units of which it is made up. Of the latter, some are, at every moment of time, passing away and giving place to newer and slightly modified ones; but the race as a whole, though thus steadily undergoing mutation - perhaps suffering decay - with the fleeting centuries, still holds fast certain physical and psychological traits, its special heritage and possession, which have in the past differentiated it from all other races, and will continue to do so as long as it enjoys a separate existence. Book Autobiography of a Sadhu

Download or read book Autobiography of a Sadhu written by Rampuri and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-02-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first insider account of an ancient and secretive tradition • By the first foreigner to become a member, and later an elder, of the Juna Akhara, the oldest and largest grouping of Naga Babas • Filled with true accounts of magic, miracles, ghosts, and austerities • With lessons on Hindu gods, ayurveda, and Indian culture woven throughout After traveling at age 18 from his native California to India in 1969, Rampuri was drawn to the Naga Babas, an ancient and wild order of naked yogis whom he calls the “Hell’s Angels of Indian Spirituality.” Organized into a sect by Adi Shankara in the 5th century BC, the Naga Babas see themselves as the ultimate protectors of the Sanatan Dharma, or what we call the Hindu religion. Rampuri became a disciple of a Naga Baba--a master shaman sadhu--from Rajasthan and, as foretold by astrological prophecy, soon found himself the first foreigner to become an initiate of the Juna Akhara, the oldest and largest grouping of Naga Babas with more than 50,000 sadhu members. From drinking the “Nectar of Immortality” at the source of the Ganges River to allegations of tantric murder, this autobiography is filled with true accounts of magic, miracles, ghosts, and austerities, with lessons on Hindu gods, ayurveda, mantra, and Indian culture woven throughout. Through his journey of extremes, Rampuri takes us into the mystic heart of India.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystics, Ascetics, and Saints of India: A Study of Sadhuism, With an Account of the Yogis, Sanyasis, Bairagis, and Other Strange Hindu Sectarians In Chapter VIII.\ the principal ascetic sects and their subdivisions are described, the Yogz's, commonly called jogt's, and the yoga system receiving especial attention. In Chapters IX. To XI. The reader is taken into the company of many sadhus I have known, and within the precincts of a few of the monasteries I have visited. Probably these last-named chapters may help to bring European readers into actual touch, as it were, with sadhuism as it exists to-day; and, if so, I shall not regret the time and the trouble, by no means inconsiderable, involved in collecting the particulars which I have embodied in them. His search brings him to a group of spiritual adepts. Their powers mesmerize him and their teachings inspire him. He begins his own inner journey. At the same time an Indian woman activist gets involved with the spiritual group and spins it out of control. Paul gets sucked into the events that follow which have a lasting impact on him and all the other characters of the story. The teachings imparted by the spiritual masters are all time-tested and the powers they display are all real. There are many esoteric yogic practices that the world knows little of. In this story these are shared. The author has shown that they do exist and further that they can be explained. She has started from known concepts of physics and psychology and extended them into other realms. Those who want to learn about Indian mystic practices and spiritual truths will find this book very valuable. Those who come with a skeptic's mind will see how it is possible to walk on the path of transformation to the end and not lose it half way. Those who rely primarily on reason will see how it is taken to its farthest point and then led on further. Those who are already open to a higher consciousness will find it a valuable guide book for the miracles they will encounter in their spiritual journey. Those who want to read it as a story will enjoy the cast of characters and their interactions.
