William Wallace Denslow, known professionally as W.W. Denslow, was an American illustrator and caricaturist remembered for his work in collaboration with author L. Frank Baum, especially his illustrations of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He was born in Philadelphia on May 5, 1856. Although he attended schools for brief periods, Denslow was primarily a self-taught artist. He traveled through-out the United States working as an artist and newspaper reporter and eventually settled in Chicago, where he met and began his collaboration with L. Frank Baum, author of the Oz books. W.W. Denslow revised and adapted several of the best-known classical, fairy tales, removing the elements of cruelty and anything that might frighten little children and illustrated them with pictures of action and fun in brilliant colors.

Hansel and Gretel claim it was self-defense. Did Humpty Dumpty really just fall off that wall, or was he pushed? Here are five fairy-tale stories with a twist, all told from the point of view of a streetwise police officer called Binky, who just happens to be a toad in a suit and a fedora. When Snow White doesn't make it to the beauty pageant, Officer Binky is the first to find the apple core lying by her bed. When an awful giant mysteriously crashes to the ground, upsetting the whole town, Binky discovers exactly who is responsible. Author David Levinthal and illustrator John Nickle retell these classic stories in the style of a 1940s noir detective novel—for kids!

Book Redlocks and the Three Bears

Download or read book Redlocks and the Three Bears written by Claudia Rueda and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goldilocks meets Little Red Riding Hood in this charming and unexpected fairytale mashup from the New York Times bestselling Illustrator of Easter Cat! KNOCK! KNOCK! When the Three Bears answer the door, it's not Goldilocks they meet, but a stranger from a different story. It's Little Red Riding Hood—and the Big Bad Wolf is close behind her! Still, much unfolds as expected: porridge is eaten, a chair is broken, and there is a girl asleep in Baby Bear's bed. Does Little Red fit in this book after all? Perhaps it's the Wolf who will surprise us. With a bit of courage and much compassion, the Bears and Little Red learn that characters, just like the stories we tell, can change over time. In this quirky combination of familiar fairy tales, Claudia Rueda tells a new story about what happens when we open our minds, hearts, and homes to the utterly unexpected. FAIRYTALES—WITH A TWIST: From the original mind of Claudia Rueda, this fresh take on classic fairy tales is an inspired nod to the storytelling tradition and reveals how some of our most beloved, time-honored children's stories interact with each other . . . literally, and with hilarity. This fairytale mashup will charm even the most jaded of readers with its humor, its wild and endearing characters, and its unexpected meta twists. FOR FANS OF...: Sure to be read side-by-side with mash-up classics like Jon Scieszka's The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and David Wiesner's The Three Pigs! MILLENNIAL LITTLE RED: Little Red Riding Hood has got a punk personality and aesthetic. She breaks down the barriers that stand in her way, including escaping traditional narratives and endings. EMPATHY FOR THE WOLF: Is The Big Bad Wolf really so big, and really so bad? Approach a "villain" with a little empathy, and you may just make a new friend! INSPIRED BY BOOKS: Inspired by antique books, Claudia Rueda has infused this book with classic bookmaking, from flourishes on book covers and type design, to playing with meta touches like walking between books, past title pages, and in to other stories. CURRICULUM TIE-IN: Perfect for teachers and librarians looking for tools for teaching about storytelling and narrative. Perfect for: For fans of fairytale mash-ups, parents, educators

Book excerpt: The Gingerbreadman: Psychopath, sadist, genius, convicted murderer and biscuit is loose in the streets of Reading. It isn't Jack Spratt's case. He and Mary Mary have been reassigned due to falling levels of nursery crime, and The NCD is once more in jeopardy. That is, until a chance encounter during the Armitage Shanks literary awards at the oddly familiar Deja-Vu Club lead Jack and Mary on the hunt for missing journalist Henrietta 'Goldilocks' Hatchett, star reporter for The Daily Toad. She had been about to break a story involving unexplained explosions in Herefordshire, Pasadena and the Nullabor Plain; The last witnesses to see her alive were The Three Bears, comfortably living out a life of rural solitude in Andersen's wood. But all is not what it seems. How could the bear's porridge be at such disparate temperatures when they were poured at the same time? Was Goldy's death in the nearby 1st World War themepark of Sommeworld a freak accident? And is it merely chance that the Gingerbreadman pops up at awkward moments? But there's more. What does a missing scientist with a terrifying discovery in subatomic physics, a secret weapon of devastating power, a reclusive industrialist known only as the Quangle Wangle and Colonel Danvers of the National Security all have in common?
