I still have the paper, but nine years after we were married she set her trunk out to sun, and a dog got the biscuit out and ate it. A Confederate in Arkansas wanted to know if it killed the dog. I told him I thought it gave him the hydrophobia, at least he died afterwards. I was badly wounded, in my new hat, in a fight near Som erville, Tenn., Christmas week of 1863. A new hat was a rarity to a Confederate soldier in those times. In writing to me a Yankee who was in the fight wanted to know why I did not pick up another, as there were plenty lying around when they left there. As they entered the building, Dr. Craig commenced reading the burial service for the dead. As soon as they reached the pulpit, and set down the corpse, the choir chanted a requiem in the most impressive manner. Rev. Dr. Craig then read the 15th chapter of the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians, 21st to the 29th verses: "For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil War Sketches and Incidents, Vol. 1 Remembering the apparent unanimity with which the people Of the south sustained the secession movement after hostilities had actually begun, we are apt to forget how devout was the love for the Union in some sections Of the Confederacy. Nowhere, not even in Eastern Tennessee, was this sentiment stronger than In portions of the state Of North Carolina. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incidents and Anecdotes of the Civil War During the Presidency of James Buchanan, and just previous to the inauguration of Mr. Lincoln, I was ordered to the command of the coast-survey steamer Active on the Pacific coast. I could not conceive why I was thus ordered, except that ships and officers were at that period being sent out of the way. This, too, at a time when the Southern States were threatening to secede, and it seemed probable the Government would require the services of all its officers to maintain the integrity of the Union. At that moment I was in a despondent frame of mind, and troubled with the most gloomy forebodings. I felt that a crisis was impending that might influence all my prospects in life and cast me upon the world without resources and with a large dependent family. I sought consolation by Visiting the houses of Southern members of Congress in Washington whom I knew, but obtained little satis faction from the sentiments I there heard expressed. One night in December, 1860, on my way home from a Visit to Congress, where I had listened to a great deal of incendiary lan guage from Southern members and plenty of Vituperation from Northern ones, a gentleman met me in the street and informed me of the secession of South Carolina. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of the Civil War: In the United States Now that the lapse of time has softened the memories of the great conflict, and, beneath the kindly intercourse daily becoming cemented between North and South, the whole country is rapidly growing in prosperity, wealth, and power, the acts of men who were violently assailed in the hour Of heated strife can and ought to be viewed with justice and kindness. Especially is this so in regard to those who are now far enough beyond the reach of criticism - in the unknown world. It is the author's hope that nothing may be found in these papers contrary to that spirit of national charity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War It is the attempt of this book to show that the Civil War was more than a succession of battles; that it was a struggle between two civilizations, each the logical result of its environment, and each endeavoring to work out the best American interest as it saw it. That of the two civilizations, one was reactionary, and Opposed to both the humani tarian sentiments of the nineteenth century and the economic profit of the race, is quite as true as the fact that honesty and intelligence were about evenly divided in the contest. The motive for secession, slavery, was indefensible in the long run, but men brought up with that institution believed in it, and were led by it to believe that the Con stitution had not created a nation, a position in which they were contradicted by the facts of industry and the law of the land. On both counts, Slavery and secession, American history must adjudge the South to have been mistaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regimental History of the First New York Dragoons: Originally the 130th N. Y. Vol; Infantry; During Three Years of Active Service in the Great Civil War The preparation of this history has been carried forward with mingled feelings of pleasure and pain. In my really laborious search after historic material I have been singularly carried back, and have lived over those three eventful years of our regimental service. Like the successive presentations of a moving panorama, their scenes have vividly seemed to pass in review. Names of comrades, with their forms and faces, are recalled after the lapse of more than a third of a century, as if but yesterday. The battlefield with its movements of troops, the roar of cannon and rattle of small arms, the ringing commands of officers, the groans of the wounded and dying soldiers, are again living realities. Looking back over a period of thirty-eight checkered years I behold a magnificent regiment, with full ranks of patriotic young men, taking their departure for the, front. Three years later a portion return as battle-scarred veterans, some with a missing limb or serious wounds, and all more or less injured, and life shortened by the exposures and hardships incident to army experience. To-day we gaze upon the fragments that survive. We are but the rear guard, the main body having crossed the dark river and pitched their shining tents "where glory guards with solemn rounds the bivouac of the dead." In this connection a word as to why the history has been written so long after the ending of the war, will be in place. Aside from the excellent little pamphlet prepared by Lieut. J. N. Flint, at the close of the war, we have no record of our splendid service as a regiment, although nearly every survivor has felt the desire for a more complete history. Download or read book Civil War Humor written by Cameron C. Nickels and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Civil War Humor, author Cameron C. Nickels examines the various forms of comedic popular artifacts produced in America from 1861 to 1865, and looks at how wartime humor was created, disseminated, and received by both sides of the conflict. Song lyrics, newspaper columns, sheet music covers, illustrations, political cartoons, fiction, light verse, paper dolls, printed envelopes, and penny dreadfuls—from and for the Union and the Confederacy—are analyzed at length. Nickels argues that the war coincided with the rise of inexpensive mass printing in the United States and thus subsequently with the rise of the country's widely distributed popular culture. As such, the war was as much a “paper war”—involving the use of publications to disseminate propaganda and ideas about the Union and the Confederacy's positions—as one taking place on battlefields. Humor was a key element on both sides in deflating pretensions and establishing political stances (and ways of critiquing them). Civil War Humor explores how the combatants portrayed Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln, life on the home front, battles, and African Americans. Civil War Humor reproduces over sixty illustrations and texts created during the war and provides close readings of these materials. At the same time, it places this corpus of comedy in the context of wartime history, economies, and tactics. This comprehensive overview examines humor's role in shaping and reflecting the cultural imagination of the nation during its most tumultuous period.
