In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: The good ship sped on her way across the calm Atlantic. It was an outward passage, according to the little charts which the company had charily distributed, but most of the passengers were homeward bound, after a summer of rest and recreation, and they were counting the days before they might hope to see Fire Island Light. On the lee side of the boat, comfortably sheltered from the wind, and just by the door of the captain's room (which was theirs during the day), sat a little group of returning Americans. The Duchess (she was down on the purser's list as Mrs. Martin, but her friends and familiars called her the Duchess of Washington Square) and Baby Van Rensselaer (she was quite old enough to vote, had her sex been entitled to that duty, but as the younger of two sisters she was still the baby of the family)—the Duchess and Baby Van Rensselaer were discussing the pleasant English voice and the not unpleasant English accent of a manly young lordling who was going to America for sport. Uncle Larry and Dear Jones were enticing each other into a bet on the ship's run of the morrow. “I'll give you two to one she don't make 420,” said Dear Jones. “I'll take it,” answered Uncle Larry. “We made 427 the fifth day last year.” It was Uncle Larry's seventeenth visit to Europe, and this was therefore his thirty-fourth voyage. “And when did you get in?” asked Baby Van Rensselaer. “I don't care a bit about the run, so long as we get in soon.” “We crossed the bar Sunday night, just seven days after we left Queenstown, and we dropped anchor off Quarantine at three o'clock on Monday morning.” “I hope we sha'n't do that this time. I can't seem to sleep any when the boat stops.” “I can, but I didn't,” continued Uncle Larry, “because my stateroom was the most for'ard in the boat, and the donkey-engine that let down the anchor was right over my head.” “So you got up and saw the sun rise over the bay,” said Dear Jones, “with the electric lights of the city twinkling in the distance, and the first faint flush of the dawn in the east just over Fort Lafayette, and the rosy tinge which spread softly upward, and——”...

Book excerpt: Haunted and humorous-an irresistible anthology of spooky fiction Almost everybody loves a good ghost story. Masters (and especially mistresses) of the art of the short story have left us many finely crafted examples to enjoy around a warm, open fire as the dark and cold press in but remain excluded behind thick curtains. There is a certain pleasing thrill-a titillation of enjoyment-in the most unadulterated frightening tales. This book takes a different tack. Not content to give the reader a shudder of fear, the editor has sought out some of the finest exponents of the genre, and chosen stories that seek to bring a smile-and perhaps a chuckle-to the faces of enthusiasts of haunted tales. 'Funny Bones' contains 19 stories of the supernatural to amuse and frighten-often at the same time. Great fun!

Book excerpt: An anthology of witty and superb tales of the macabre. "Think what a solemn creature the Gothic ghost was! How little originality and initiative he showed and how dependent he was on his own atmosphere for thrills! His sole appeal was to the spinal column. The ghost of to-day touches the funny bone as well. He adds new horrors to being haunted, but new pleasures also. The modern specter can be a joyous creature on occasion, as he can be, when he wishes, fearsome beyond the dreams of classic or Gothic revenant. He has a keen sense of humor and loves a good joke on a mortal, while he can even enjoy one on himself." Dorothy Scarborough Ghosts get the tongue-in-cheek treatment in some very witty tales: "The Canterville Ghost" by Oscar Wilde, "The Third Person" by Henry James," "The Ghost Ship" by Richard Middleton, and "The Transferred Ghost" by Frank R. Stockton as well as many, many more! Ominously clever, witty and humorous, Humorous Ghost Stories has been a favorite since its original publication in 1921, and readers who don't usually care for ghost stories will find that they can't put it down. This book was released on with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trouble with Harrowby Hall was that it was haunted. What was worse, the ghost did not merely appear at the bedside of the person who saw it, but insisted on staying there for one hour before it would disappear. There she would stand until everything about her was thoroughly drenched. It never appeared except on Christmas Eve, and then only as the clock was striking twelve. The owners of Harrowby Hall had done their best to rid themselves of the damp and dewy lady, but she still rose up out of the best bedroom floor at midnight. They had tried stopping the clock, so the ghost would not know when it was midnight; but she made her appearance just the same. Find out how the heirs of Harrowby Hall attempt to outwit the water ghost, and what happens when they do! Ages 9 and up. Educational Versions have exercises designed to meet Common Core standards.
