Book excerpt: The fourteen chapters in this anthology feature original analyses of contemporary German-language literary texts, films, political cartoons, cabaret, and other types of performance. The artworks display a wide spectrum of humor modes, such as irony, satire, the grotesque, Jewish humor, and slapstick, as responses to unification with the accompanying euphoria, but also alienation and dislocation. Kerstin Hensel’s Lärchenau, Christoph Hein’s Landnahme, and vignette collections by Jakob Hein (Antrag auf ständige Ausreise und andere Mythen der DDR) and Wladimir Kaminer (Es gab keinen Sex im Sozialismus) are interpreted as examples of the grotesque. The popular films Lola rennt, Sonnenallee, Herr Lehmann, NVA, Alles auf Zucker!, and Mein Führer—Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler are reexamined through the lens of traditional and more recent humor or comic book theories. The contributors focus on how each artwork enriches four prominent postwall German cultural trends: post-unification identity reconstruction, Vergangenheitsbewältigung (including Hitler humor), New German Popular Literature (Christian Kracht’s ironic subtexts), and immigrant perspectives (a “third voice” in the East-West binary reflected here pointedly in Eulenspiegel cartoons). To date, no other scholarly work provides as comprehensive an overview of the diverse strategies of humor used in the past two decades in German-speaking countries.

As sophisticated attempts to make sense of socialism’s failure and a difficult unification process, these contemporary texts help define Germany today from a specific, Eastern German perspective. Grounded in politics and history, ten humorous and satirical novels are analyzed for their literary aesthetics and language, cultural critiques, and socio-political insights. The texts include popular novels such as Thomas Brussig’s Helden wie wir, Ingo Schulze’s Simple Storys, and Jens Sparschuh’s Der Zimmerspringbrunnen, as well as lesser-known but equally relevant works like Schlehweins Giraffe by Bernd Schirmer and Katerfrühstück by Erich Loest. A broad spectrum of humor and satire theories is applied to probe texts from various angles and suggest multi-layered answers to the question of how these literary modes function in postwall Germany to construct a specifically Eastern German identity. Interviews the author conducted with five of the satirists are appended as primary sources and contribute to the interpretation of the texts.

Book excerpt: This dissertation asks: to what extent have uses of irony, satire, and chaotic, disruptive humor reflected and facilitated changes in German identity, history, issues of collective responsibility for Nazi crimes, and national belonging in a reunited and increasingly multi-ethnic and diverse Germany? This dissertation examines humor's role in twentieth-century German society and literature as it relates to these issues. Chapter one begins with an overview of humor's position in the political and ideological conflicts of the Weimar Republic, where it reflected the growing sense of political and social discord. I then go on to demonstrate humor's role under National Socialism as a tool of social cohesion that sought to normalize National Socialism's vision of an idealized racial community. Humor does this, I suggest, through a conciliatory laughter (known as Deutscher Humor by contemporaries) that encourages a passive and firmly non-political worldview that extols the virtues a harmonious group identity. Chapter two traces humor through the immediate postwar years and into the Student Movement of the 1960s and 70s. It begins with humor's position in postwar discourses about national guilt and the possibility of a new, democratic German national identity. By analyzing postwar publication of Nazi-era political jokes (Flüsterwitze), I show how discussions about humor and how it supposedly functioned as an avenue for political criticism under National Socialism played an important part in the construction of a West German identity distinct from the Nazi past. The chapter then discusses humor's role in the political and social revolutions of the 1960s and 70s through popular television programs: Loriot's sketch comedy and the sitcom Ein Herz und eine Seele. These shows represent, I contend, a shift away from traditional cabaret satire toward a more chaotic or "explosive" humor that seeks to reveal unspoken realities beneath the surface of an "ordered" society. Chapter three looks at humor as it relates to the late 1970s and early 1980s. Continuing the trend toward a more disruptive humor that in the 1960s and 70s, films like Dorris Dörrie's Männer and Otto Waalkes's Otto-der Film investigate the idea of social performance and concept of identity. They do this through adopting aspects of absurdist move is, I suggest, both a reaction to the sense of malaise and dissatisfaction that followed the Student Movement. Both films play extensively with the idea of gender as a performed identity, and in doing so open up larger critiques of capitalism and the climate of conservatism and conformity that had overtaken the 68 Generation. Chapter four looks at humor in Germany since reunification as it relates to three interrelated themes: the East German experience post-unification; Turkish-German identity and the ideal of integration; and contemporary comedies about Hitler. Though distinct in their own ways, each theme demonstrates a trend in contemporary humor toward reconciliation and the creation of a shared identity and the idea of a common future. It is not, however, at the expense of difference or diversity. Humor as it functions here does not deny differences, rather it does not dwell on them; it seeks to reconcile difference with a common identity, to preserve uniqueness while fostering a sense of shared belonging.
