Book Exploring Renewable Energy Futures in Humboldt County Consistent with the Goals of California s Renewable Portfolio Standard

Download or read book Exploring Renewable Energy Futures in Humboldt County Consistent with the Goals of California s Renewable Portfolio Standard written by Amin M. Younes and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humboldt County has abundant wind, solar, and biomass resources, but has made limited progress towards the state’s 2045 requirement of 100% clean electricity. A recently rejected onshore wind project showed that technically and economically viable projects can fall to social and political challenges, emphasizing the need for social considerations in renewable transitions. I therefore integrated community members’ preferences into modeling of RPS-consistent renewable energy scenarios in Humboldt County. My model suggests that offshore wind, utility-scale solar, distributed solar, and biomass power are technically and economically viable sources of significant local generation at varying costs. In interviews with energy-engaged residents, I observed divergent normative conceptions of Humboldt County’s energy future despite climate change mitigation through renewables growth being unanimously desired. Some envisaged a future of minimally intrusive distributed solar, while others support projects at a scale that would transform Humboldt County into “the Silicon Valley of wind energy.” These opinions frequently overlaid conceptions of appropriateness and efficiency, for example, preferring offshore wind over cheaper utility-scale solar because Humboldt County’s wind resource abstractly overshadows its solar resource. Participants prioritized projects which best use Humboldt’s resources. Because some support exclusively distributed solar while others believe it to be technically infeasible, a thorough study of distributed resource potential could help create the shared understanding necessary for productive discourse and concerted political effort against climate change. Continuous discussions among stakeholders could create a permission space for energy infrastructure and avoid wasting time and money on projects inconsistent with social and political desires.

Book Communities and the Clean Energy Revolution

Download or read book Communities and the Clean Energy Revolution written by Melanie J. La Rosa and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communities and the Clean Energy Revolution: Public Health, Economics, Design, and Transformation is an engaging and interdisciplinary investigation into clean energy systems such as solar and wind power and the need to transform our energy system. Looking at the intersection of clean energy with community engagement, diversity, and economic development, it is a remarkably accessible account from the front lines of the clean energy revolution. Organized as a series of case studies set in eight locations, the author profiles people leading varied renewable energy projects from using solar to survive hurricanes to passing a Green New Deal bill for America’s largest city, the beginnings of the offshore wind industry, modular solar power systems, and changing the culture of an entire utility. Each case study is set into context of broader research, addressing how cities and states meet clean energy goals, howsolar or wind power address blackouts, and how individuals can accelerate clean energy for their home, business, or community. This book goes beyond merely explaining clean energy transition by providing unique insight into the calls for a complete transformation of America’s energy system.

Book Getting Humboldt State University Off the Grid

Download or read book Getting Humboldt State University Off the Grid written by Cory Rose Busher and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s non-renewable resources for energy are slowly diminishing and cannot be replaced as fast as they are being consumed (OpenStax CNX). The limited supply of fossil fuel oil, coal, natural gas and nuclear power are exponentially being depleted as the world’s population grows. At this rate, natural gas supply will run out within the next 35 years, and fossil fuel oil will be depleted within the next 14 years (Carty). These frightening facts are the driving force behind the renewable energy source movement. World demand for energy is projected to more than double by 2050 and to more than triple by the end of the century (US Department of Energy). Renewable energy sources include solar, biomass, wind, geothermal and hydropower. The daunting task of shifting away from non-renewable energy polluters and emphasizing mainstream renewable energy sources into normal consumer and business practices is a necessary challenge society needs to start enforcing now.

Download or read book Humboldt written by Emily Brady and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vein of Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief and Deborah Feldman's Unorthodox, journalist Emily Brady journeys into a secretive subculture--one that marijuana built. Say the words "Humboldt County" to a stranger and you might receive a knowing grin. The name is infamous, and yet the place, and its inhabitants, have been nearly impenetrable. Until now. Humboldt is a narrative exploration of an insular community in Northern California, which for nearly 40 years has existed primarily on the cultivation and sale of marijuana. It's a place where business is done with thick wads of cash and savings are buried in the backyard. In Humboldt County, marijuana supports everything from fire departments to schools, but it comes with a heavy price. As legalization looms, the community stands at a crossroads and its inhabitants are deeply divided on the issue--some want to claim their rightful heritage as master growers and have their livelihood legitimized, others want to continue reaping the inflated profits of the black market. Emily Brady spent a year living with the highly secretive residents of Humboldt County, and her cast of eccentric, intimately drawn characters take us into a fascinating, alternate universe. It's the story of a small town that became dependent on a forbidden plant, and of how everything is changing as marijuana goes mainstream.
