Book Human Targets

  • Author : Victor M. Rios
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2017-03-08

Download or read book Human Targets written by Victor M. Rios and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-08 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victor Rios has a vibrant reputation as America s leading ethnographer of Latino youth. His personal storygoing from drug pusher (selling heroin on the streets as a teenager) to a hard worker at a mechanic shop within a matter of weeksshows how he stands in the place of the Latino youths he studies. His story underscores the degree to which delinquent urban youths can become adaptable, fluid, amenable individuals, able to shift their views of the world as well as their actions. Rios rejects the old storyline that said gangs are bad and they do bad things because they are bad people. Kids on the street, he argues, can drift between different identities, indeed, they can shift seamlessly between responsible and deviant displays within a few hours time. The key to understanding gang-associated youth lies in analysis of the way authority figures (teachers and police officers) interact with young people. The kids need caring adults who offer tangible resources. Story and characters are always front-and-center in Rios s narrative: Jorge, Mark, Wilson, and others, are boys we get to know as they negotiate day-to-day life on the streets and across institutional settings. We learn a great deal about Cholo subculture, the clothing and hairstyles, and the argot that are adopted by Latino youth in response to the forces that seek to marginalize or punish them. The crisis of a perceived epidemic of police brutality in our post-Ferguson era is a product of culture in Rios s view: contested symbols, negative interactions, and day-to-day encounters that freeze youth identities as gang-associated, and that freeze authority identities as negative shapers of youth attitudes and actions are the dynamic. Fear of young males of color leads to police misreading and dehumanizing of young black and Latino men. Rios raises our awareness of how this dynamic operates by studying his subjects whole: following young gang members into their schools, their homes, their community organizations, their detention facilities, and watching them interact with police, watching them grow up to become fathers, get jobs, get rap sheets. Get killed. This book will be a landmark contribution to the social psychology of poverty and crime."

Book Stalked the Human Target

Download or read book Stalked the Human Target written by Rachel Cassidy and published by . This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stalked: The Human Target is a detailed account of the effects of stalking, which is experienced by a shockingly high proportion of the population. Celebrities like David Letterman and Madonna are the highest profile targets of stalkers, but ordinary people are also targeted, harassed and bullied. Rachel Cassidy, herself the target of a stalker, tells the stories of people who have been pursued by stalkers and the devastating effects that has had on their lives. Sometimes the stalker's behaviour becomes violent. Dancing with the Stars judge Mark Wilson had two dancing schools burned to the ground and his career destroyed. The man who stalked Jodie Foster attempted to assassinate President Reagan to gain her attention. Stalked is a perceptive analysis of stalking from the inside - told by the targets, the stalkers, and the experts who deal with the havoc wreaked by the people who harass or persecute others with unwanted and obsessive attention.

Book excerpt: A diary is usually a personal record, where you write your secrets, your innermost thoughts and feelings. It's something you keep for yourself, something you don't share with others. But not this diary. The “Diary of a Human Target” is different from any other, because it is not intended to be kept secret; on the contrary, it is meant to be read by as many people as possible. It could be the diary of every person who feels isolated and trapped in a hostile world and can't stay silent any more. It reflects a longing for real communication in an uncommunicative society. Page by page, it exposes the subtle but inexorable war which is continually waged throughout human society, as it unfolds the tormented youth of Yvonne Fezarris: A free mind who is constantly targeted by visible and invisible evil forces and seeks to know the reason why -until she reaches an incredible conclusion...

She is eminent for her high intelligence and good character. She never wishes to harm anybody; she wouldn't know how, either. As a result, the others underestimate her and show it to her at the first opportunity. During adolescence, new problems appear: Gangs of hostile persons seem to be lurking for her everywhere, always ready to deride and terrorize her without any apparent reason. Moreover, she is constantly dogged by negative omens, bad luck and odd coincidences. Every time things seem to be getting better, finally everything goes wry and she ends up worse than before. She comes to believe that she is a target of visible and invisible evil forces. Reaching adulthood, her life takes an unhoped turn for the better. Her wildest dreams seem to be on their way to materialization. But is it so?
