Book The Social Impacts of Urban Containment

Download or read book The Social Impacts of Urban Containment written by Arthur C. Nelson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the policies that has been most widely used to try to limit urban sprawl has been that of urban containment. These policies are planning controls limiting the growth of cities in an attempt to preserve open rural uses, such as habitat, agriculture and forestry, in urban regions. While there has been a substantial amount of research into these urban containment policies, most have focused on issues of land use, consumption, transportation impacts or economic development issues. This book examines the effects of urban containment policies on key social issues, such as housing, wealth building and creation, racial segregation and gentrification. It argues that, while the policies make important contributions to environmental sustainability, they also affect affordability for all the economic groups of citizens aside from the most wealthy. However, it also puts forward suggestions for revising such policies to counter these possible negative social impacts. As such, it will be valuable reading for scholars of environmental planning, social policy and regional development, as well as for policy makers.

Download or read book Human Service Program Planning Through a Social Justice Lens written by Irwin Nesoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Service Program Planning Through a Social Justice Lens provides a foundation in social justice to students while developing practical skills and knowledge about the steps and tasks involved in planning social programs. The textbook explores current concepts and approaches to understanding social issues and involving impacted communities and individuals. These include: Intersectionality, Appreciative Inquiry, Participatory Planning and Visioning, which serve to challenge preconceptions while coupling these with the step-by-step approach to planning using the Logic Model. Book Planning for Ecosystem Services in Cities

Download or read book Planning for Ecosystem Services in Cities written by Davide Geneletti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents current knowledge about ecosystem services (ES) in urban planning, and discusses various urban ES topics such as spatial distribution of urban ecosystems, population distribution, and physical infrastructure properties. The book addresses all these issues by: i) investigating to what extent ecosystem services are currently included in urban plans, and discussing what is still needed to improve planning practice; ii) illustrating how to develop ecosystem services indicators and information that can be used by urban planners to enhance plan design; iii) demonstrating the application of ES assessments to support urban planning processes through case studies; and iv) reflecting on criteria for addressing equity in urban planning through ecosystem service assessments, by exploring issues associated with the supply of, the access to and demand for ES by citizens. Through fully worked out case studies, from policy questions, to baseline analysis and indicators, and from option comparison to proposed solutions, the book offers readers detailed and accessible coverage of outstanding issues and proposed solutions to better integrate ES in city planning. The overall purpose of the book is to provide a compact reference that can be used by researchers as a key resource offering an updated perspective and overview on the field, as well as by practitioners and planners/decision makers as a source of inspiration for their activity. Additionally, the book will be a suitable resource for both undergraduate and post-graduate courses in planning and geography.
