Book Human Resource Management in the Airline Industry The Example of Star Alliance

Download or read book Human Resource Management in the Airline Industry The Example of Star Alliance written by Sarah Wilson and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2005-07-10 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (WISO), course: Internationales Management, language: English, abstract: The aim of this thesis is to explore Human Resource Management (HRM) in the passenger business of the airline industry, and in particular, the potential for standardisation of HRM in airline alliances, by using the example of Star Alliance . A first analysis immediately highlights that the area of HRM continues to be individually managed by Star Alliance’s member airlines. EATON (2004, p. L) makes the assumption, “I doubt very much if Star Alliance is sufficiently cohesive to lead to significant changes, let alone convergence, in HRM practices”. This belief is to be explored. This thesis will have four main objectives. The first objective is to identify potential benefits and costs to the alliance that could be associated with a standardised HRM-policy . These advantages and disadvantages will be grouped according to the six L’s (learning, leaning, leveraging, linking, leaping, and locking out), as defined by PREECE (1995) (see 3.1). Secondly, the author would like to use a theoretical model, the integration-responsiveness grid of PRAHALAD/DOZ (1986; 1987), to capture the pressures, which make the strategies of standardisation or individualisation critical. This model will be applied to the airline industry, and to an organisational (Star Alliance), and functional (HRM) context (see 3.2). The third objective is to analyse the extent to which the members of Star Alliance apply standardised, as apposed to individualised HRM instruments in reality, and to consider whether Star Alliance airlines are increasingly or decreasingly standardising the HRM-field (see 3.3). Finally, the author would like to discus the reasons to explain the findings of section 3.3 (see 3.4).

Book Risk Management and Corporate Sustainability in Aviation

Download or read book Risk Management and Corporate Sustainability in Aviation written by Triant G. Flouris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability factors should be considered by managers like any other business risk issue; these factors are expected to have a substantial impact on corporate management. Air transport corporations need a strong sustainability management framework to effectively manage economic, environmental and social risks to achieve their corporate sustainability objectives, and to meet their stakeholders' demands. This book offers a new Enterprise Sustainability Risk Management (ESRM) model to fulfill these requirements. In the model presented, the triple bottom line (TBL) agenda is incorporated into the companies' sustainability management. ESRM deals with the environmental, social, and ecological risks as well as the strategic, economic, operational, and threat risks of companies. The best corporate sustainability strategies and management approaches require the consideration of all corporate risks in both a holistic and systematic way. Flouris and Kucuk Yilmaz present an effective way to manage sustainability risks via a new, well-designed, integrated, dynamic and flexible framework. It introduces an opportunity for turning risks into potential corporate advantages. Risk Management and Corporate Sustainability in Aviation is addressed to professionals, students and researchers within air transportation business management and risk management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And you thought the passengers were mad. Airline employees are fed up, too-with pay cuts, increased workloads and management's miserly ways, which leave workers to explain to often-enraged passengers why flying has become such a miserable experience."—The New York Times, December 22, 2007 When both an industry's workers and its customers report high and rising frustration with the way they are being treated, something is fundamentally wrong. In response to these conditions, many of the world's airlines have made ever-deeper cuts in services and their workforces. Is it too much to expect airlines, or any other enterprise, to provide a fair return to investors, high-quality reliable service to their customers, and good jobs for their employees? Measured against these three expectations, the airline industry is failing. In the first five years of the twenty-first century alone, U.S. airlines lost a total of $30 billion while shedding 100,000 jobs, forcing the remaining workers to give up over $15 billion in wages and benefits. Combined with plummeting employee morale, shortages of air traffic controllers, and increased congestion and flight delays, a total collapse of the industry may be coming. Is this state of affairs inevitable? Or is it possible to design a more sustainable, less volatile industry that better balances the objectives of customers, investors, employees, and the wider society? Does deregulation imply total abrogation of government's responsibility to oversee an industry showing the clear signs of deterioration and increasing risk of a pending crisis? Greg J. Bamber, Jody Hoffer Gittell, Thomas A. Kochan, and Andrew von Nordenflycht explore such questions in a well-informed and engaging way, using a mix of quantitative evidence and qualitative studies of airlines from North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. Up in the Air provides clear and realistic strategies for achieving a better, more equitable balance among the interests of customers, employees, and shareholders. Specifically, the authors recommend that firms learn from the innovations of companies like Southwest and Continental Airlines in order to build a positive workplace culture that fosters coordination and commitment to high-quality service, labor relations policies that avoid long drawn-out conflicts in negotiating new agreements, and business strategies that can sustain investor, employee, and customer support through the ups and downs of business cycles.

Book Human Resource Management Practices in an Airline Industry

Download or read book Human Resource Management Practices in an Airline Industry written by Dr. Julius B. Bertillo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to highlight the management strategy of the British Airways to redirect its short, medium and long-term strategic plans along enhancement of its customer service through a rationalized recruitment, selection, training and promotion processes. British Airways is one of the largest, most progressive and quality-based airline in the world servicing primarily Europe and the North American continents. One of the strongest components of the airline is its human resource management practices, considered among the best practices in recruitment, selection, training and promotions systems. People look up to this system to generate one of the most intensive training modules in customer service. The strength of the training program of the British Airways is the stringent standards required in the hiring processes, contributing to the distinct British Airways quality of customer service unequalled in the industry. However, this proves to be at great cost to the airline. Excellent training brings a better competitive edge of the human capital, but this triggers transfers to competitors with better offers. Moreover, the British Airways need to look deeper in its pockets to subsidize the rising cost of training, development and promotions systems. However, the strategic direction in these areas will likely focus on the diversification of the pool of candidates among the most preferred feeder countries. This will provide relatively cheaper manpower but with equally strong character-based standards of qualifications. Searching can be expanded to other Commonwealth countries and host countries with flight reciprocities. Diversification is expected to gain benefits for the workforce and the company itself.Hence, British Airways is in the thick of its journey towards its expanded existence through the human resources management strategy in an airline industry globally. Enhancing the human resource management processes is a road map towards this end.
