Book Human Pilot Dynamics with Various Manipulators

Download or read book Human Pilot Dynamics with Various Manipulators written by Duane T. McRuer and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the experimental efforts is to explore on a preliminary basis the limiting characteristics of the human operator's 'actuator' or neuromuscular system dynamics as affected by the manipulator. The effects of three manipulators (pressure, free-moving, and spring-restrained) on system performance and the human operator's describing function are presented for three controlled elements and two high bandwidth forcing functions. Describing function differences are primarily in the phase, i.e., the effective time delay at high-frequency and an effective phase lag at very low frequencies. Generally the mean square error and describing function results for the spring-restrained manipulator were intermediate to those for the free-moving (no spring) and the pressure (infinite spring) manipulators. The pressure controller gave lower mean square error and less effective time delay than the free-moving controller. In addition, the effective phase lag at very low frequencies was either the same as or larger than that for the free-moving control.

Book Effects of Manipulator Restraints on Human Operator Performance

Download or read book Effects of Manipulator Restraints on Human Operator Performance written by R. E. Magdaleno and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is concerned with a series of experiments in which the effects of manipulator restraints, i.e., load dynamics imposed on the operator, are central. The purposes of this investigation are to: Determine the load effects on the human operator's describing functions and performance measures for a representative variety of manipulator restraints and controlled elements. Provide inferential insight into the relative importance of limb position and output force senses in manual control.

Book New Approaches to Human pilot vehicle Dynamic Analysis

Download or read book New Approaches to Human pilot vehicle Dynamic Analysis written by Duane T. McRuer and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New models for human pilot dynamics and new methods for pilot/vehicle dynamic analysis are investigated. The status of existing quasi-linear models is reviewed and deficiencies are noted as a basis for pinpointing areas needing the most effort. The pilot modeling topics explored include: low frequency lead generation using either velocity sensing at the periphery (eye) or difference computations accomplished at a more central level; mode-switching models for nonstationary or discrete inputs to the pilot/vehicle system; physiological aspects of pilot dynamics in tracking tasks; Successive Organization of Perception (SOP) theory for levels of pilot cognition higher than compensatory. For pilot/vehicle analysis, analytical approaches from control theory which appear to have promise are studied, including: time-optimal computing feedforward elements useful in the mode switching models for response to nonstationary inputs; optimal control theory using the crossover model in the performance criterion to estimate pilot response characteristics in compensatory tasks; inverse optimal control theory using known experimental results and quasi-linear pilot response models in an effort to define the pilot's adjustment rules in terms of performance indices; optimal control theory to provide a simple test for optimality (to an elementary quadratic criterion) using only average performance measure data.

Book Measurement of Pilot Describing Functions in Single controller Multiloop Tasks

Download or read book Measurement of Pilot Describing Functions in Single controller Multiloop Tasks written by Robert L. Stapleford and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This report deals with the problems of measuring pilot describing functions in multi-loop tasks with one controller, i.e., where the pilot is controlling two, or more, response variables with a single manipulator. Both direct and implicit measurement techniques were considered and tested experimentally. The experimental task used was attitude and altitude control with elevator of an aircraft in a simulated landing approach. The experimental results show that the measurement of multi-loop describing functions is feasible although the techniques are considerably more complex than those required for single-loop compensatory tasks. However, there are certain fundamental limitations on the accuracy of some of the results. These are discussed in detail in the report. The experimental data also provide a spot check on the existing multi-loop pilot model. The results support the current model and, in particular, show that the inner-loop (attitude) closure is quite similar to that for single-loop attitude tracking."--Summary.
