Book Regional Development Research in China A Roadmap to 2050

This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the eighteen field-specific reports comprising the comprehensive scope of the strategic general report of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this sub-report addresses long-range planning for developing science and technology in the field of regional development research. They each craft a roadmap for their sphere of development to 2050. In their entirety, the general and sub-group reports analyze the evolution and laws governing the development of science and technology, describe the decisive impact of science and technology on the modernization process, predict that the world is on the eve of an impending S&T revolution, and call for China to be fully prepared for this new round of S&T advancement. Based on the detailed study of the demands on S&T innovation in China's modernization, the reports draw a framework for eight basic and strategic systems of socio-economic development with the support of science and technology, work out China's S&T roadmaps for the relevant eight basic and strategic systems in line with China's reality, further detail S&T initiatives of strategic importance to China's modernization, and provide S&T decision-makers with comprehensive consultations for the development of S&T innovation consistent with China's reality. Supported by illustrations and tables of data, the reports provide researchers, government officials and entrepreneurs with guidance concerning research directions, the planning process, and investment. Founded in 1949, the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the nation's highest academic institution in natural sciences. Its major responsibilities are to conduct research in basic and technological sciences, to undertake nationwide integrated surveys on natural resources and ecological environment, to provide the country with scientific data and consultations for government's decision-making, to undertake government-assigned projects with regard to key S&T problems in the process of socio-economic development, to initiate personnel training, and to promote China's high-tech enterprises through its active engagement in these areas.

Book Thinking about Development

Download or read book Thinking about Development written by Paul Patrick Streeten and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-24 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Streeten is recognised as one of the profession's most eminent authorities on economic development. In these lectures he provides a major statement on his approach to the development problem, stressing that human development, not simply income growth, should be the focus of all strategies to eradicate hunger and poverty in the world. His argument assigns an important role to reformed government - both in providing social services and in facilitating the functioning of markets - in opposition to the prevailing idea that minimal government is more often than not the optimal solution. The role of small and larger firms, institutions, central and local government is also carefully examined. Streeten outlines a normative political economy - how to mobilise reformist alliances, how to use interest group, how to harness coalition - in the pursuit of effective development.

Book Regional Development and Settlement Policy

Download or read book Regional Development and Settlement Policy written by David Dewar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986. This book focusses on a critical analysis of regional development strategy in South Africa, and shifts over time in that strategy. Regional development theory and thinking about settlement policy have developed largely independently of each other. This book clarifies some of the resulting confusion and points towards a greater integration of the two areas of understanding. The book provides an overview of shifts which occurred in national and regional development theory and the broader social, economic and political factors which influenced these shifts. It identifies the major policy implications of the various development approaches, with particular emphasis placed on the role of settlement policy. The differences between policy approaches and the debates surrounding them are identified and discussed.

Book Spatial inequalities and regional development

Download or read book Spatial inequalities and regional development written by H. Folmer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1977 a 'Regional Science Symposium' was held at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. Organized because of the recent establishment at the Faculty of Economics of a group that is engaged in teaching and research in the field of regional science, the aim of the symposium was to make university members more familiar with regional science and to introduce the newly created group to the national and international scene. Two separate topics were selected, of potential interest to both re searchers and policy-makers. The first, spatial inequalities and regional development, was chosen because of its central place in regional science. Authors from several disciplines were asked to approach this theme from a general, policy orientated point of view. This ensured the enlightenment of the various dimensions of spatial inequality and its implications for regional policy. The results have been collected in the volume Spatial Inequalities and Regional Development. The second theme focused on spatial statistical analysis. This branch of statistics is a relatively new one which receives growing attention among researchers in the field of applied regional science. The meeting on this topic concentrated on new results of research on the use of appro priate statistical and econometric methods for analyzing spatial data. The papers concerned have been collected into another volume, Explora tory and Explanatory Statistical Analysis of Spatial Data.
