Book Bioethics and the Character of Human Life

Download or read book Bioethics and the Character of Human Life written by Gilbert Meilaender and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-05-18 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the essays collected here Gilbert Meilaender invites readers to reflect upon some of the bioethical issues that are important for all of us. The essays treat bioethics less as a discipline confined to a few experts than as a deeply humanistic set of concerns that inevitably draws us into religious and metaphysical issues. From reflections on his experience as a member of the President's Council on Bioethics to the way in which Christian trinitarian teaching has shaped what it means to be a person, from life's beginning to its ending, these essays offer readers a chance to think about matters of fundamental human significance.

Book Plagues Apocalypses and Bug Eyed Monsters

Download or read book Plagues Apocalypses and Bug Eyed Monsters written by Heather Urbanski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speculative fiction--both science fiction and fantasy--reflects, among other things, the fears of the culture that created it, contributing (perhaps unconsciously) to our efforts to prevent our fears from coming true. While the names and media change over time, the themes of speculative fiction have a long history. Nineteenth century works such as Frankenstein and The Invisible Man contain many of the same messages as the more modern tales of Terminator, Jurassic Park and even Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, although almost a century separates their creation. This critical study discusses the ways in which speculative fiction reflects societal fears and analyzes how such cautionary tales contribute to society's efforts to avoid the realization of these fears. Beginning with a discussion of the nature of speculative fiction, it takes a look at the characteristics of the cautionary tale. The core of the book, however, is the concept of the "Nightmares Model," which examines and categorizes the repetition of specific themes within the genre. The dangers of science and technology, the perils of power, and the threat of the unknown are discussed as recurrent themes within a variety of works in prose, film and television. Works analyzed range from Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea to 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Blair Witch Project. Sources include the author's own observations as a member of the genre's fandom, a variety of published commentaries and the perspectives of contemporary professionals gained through personal interviews and panel discussions.

Book Extraterrestrial Legacies of God Jesus and the Angels

Download or read book Extraterrestrial Legacies of God Jesus and the Angels written by Raphael-Seraphin Kutota Basisa and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-03 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book In some way or form, this book is unassumingly a nicer and a more logical organization and interpretation of compounding existing religious writings from a variety of walks of life. Herein, they are presented as proof drawn synthetically from those multitude of intellectual sources written over the last 4,000 years evidencing that the central figure of the persona translated as the reincarnation of almighty God of Israel himself in Christian literature is simply another Extraterrestrial Alien visiting Planet Earth for a purpose. Another visitor just like those well-known Anunnaki, the Elohim, the Nephilim, the Sons of God, the Watchers, the renegade Angels or other entities over several millennia ego. And, in the many ways how it is related to the current humanity's most pressing problem of whether we are alone and unique in the Cosmos as it is linked to the much-witnessed UFO encounters phenomenon. It also well outlined the latent consequences resulting from what is presented as postulate. About the Author Raphael-Seraphin Kutota Basisa currently resides in Lynn, Massachusetts. He would consider himself a futurist, a researcher, a world’s concerned citizen, and a great human being. He is a chemical engineer by training and earned an MBA and an ABD in Applied Management and Public Policy. He has written and published several technical and non-technical documents, commentaries, articles, papers, and other books along the subjects of his expertise. He believes in extraterrestrial life in regard to religion. Basisa is a person whose research helped to recognize early on the theory that we are all descendants of Extraterrestrials and Cosmic religiosity should be recognized in modern theology.

Download or read book Metaphysics of Goodness written by Robert Cummings Neville and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-09-27 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Metaphysics of Goodness, Robert Cummings Neville extends Alfred North Whitehead's project of cultural studies, which was based on a new metaphysics that Whitehead developed in Adventures of Ideas. Neville's focus is value or goodness in many modes. The metaphysics treated in this book derive from the Platonic and Confucian traditions, with significant modifications of Whitehead, Peirce, Dewey, Confucius, Xunzi, and Zhou Dunyi. Part one develops a theory of form based on a metaphysics of harmony. Part two elaborates a theory of art based on a metaphysics of beauty. Part three sketches a theory of personhood based on a metaphysics of obligation. Part four discusses civilization in a systematic way based on a metaphysics of flourishing. Throughout the book, Neville elaborates a theory of interpretation that is inspired by Peirce, Dewey, and Xunzi but is not limited to their ideas. While the reasoning of the book is concise, it employs methodologies from many kinds of philosophy, art criticism, ethics, and cultural studies, and sees philosophy as needing to learn from all these disciplines.

Book Kierkegaard Communication and Virtue

Download or read book Kierkegaard Communication and Virtue written by Mark A. Tietjen and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tietjen offers the kind of approach that encourages us to put the emphasis where it rightly belongs: on Kierkegaard’s philosophical ideas.” —Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews In contrast to recent postmodern and deconstructionist readings, Mark A. Tietjen believes that the purpose behind Kierkegaard’s writings is the moral and religious improvement of the reader. Tietjen defends Kierkegaard against claims that certain features of his works, such as pseudonymity, indirect communication, irony, and satire are self-deceived or deceitful. Kierkegaard, Communication, and Virtue reveals how they are directly related to the virtues or moral issues being discussed. In fact, Tietjen argues, the manner of presentation is a critical element of the philosophical message being conveyed. Reading broadly in Kierkegaard’s writings, he develops a hermeneutics of trust that fully illustrates Kierkegaard’s aim to evoke faith in his reader. “Tietjen’s critique of deconstructionist readings of Kierkegaard along with an emphasis on employing a hermeneutic of trust clearly distinguishes his work from other treatments of Kierkegaard as a virtue ethicist and edifying writer.” —Sylvia Walsh, Stetson University

Download or read book The School for Life written by Edward Broadbridge and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872) produced a major body of work in the fields of theology, education, literature, politics, and history. He was also a poet, a hymn-writer, and a translator. In particular, however, it is his educational writings that over the years have attracted international attention from the USA in the west to Japan in the east. In recognition of his influence the European Union called its adult education project the Grundtvig programme. As part of its agenda to digitalise and translate some of this vast output, the Grundtvig Study Centre at the University of Aarhus is pleased to publish this broad selection of Grundtvig's writings on education in a completely new translation. The texts vary in form from poems and songs to articles in periodicals, introductions to books, an open letter to the Norwegians and a private letter to the King of Denmark. These texts, taken together, will provide a solid basis for international scholars without knowledge of Danish to be able to work closely with Grundtvigs ideas on education for the people. The book is accompanied by a CD (MP3 format) with the texts read by Edward Broadbridge and the introductions by Clay Warren.
