The introductory section summarises current knowledge on the structure, function, genetics and evolution of the HLA system. It clarifies its complex and ever changing nomenclature and discusses the mechanisms underlying disease associations with HLA alleles. The second section deals with the importance of HLA in the context of different clinical specialities. Individual chapters describe the association between HLA polymorphism and each disease. The final section features chapters on current laboratory practice in histocompatibility and tissue typing. HLA in Health and Disease is essential reading for basic and clinical researchers working in immunology and immunogenetics, transplantation medicine and autoimmunity. It will also be of interest to anyone in the fields of rheumatology, diabetology, nephrology, allergy, dermatology, neurology, endocrinology, cancer biology, respiratory medicine, haematology, molecular biology and biochemistry. Book Transplantation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Johann W. Masshoff
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642663923
  • Pages : 956 pages

Download or read book Transplantation written by Johann W. Masshoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organ transplantation has almost disappeared from headlines in the daily press, possibly because it failed to fulfill exaggerated expectations. Transplanta tion pathology has become more and more important, not only with relation to therapeutic transplantations but even more in its fundamental theories. There is some analogy here to the development in space science where spectacular achievements were followed by sobering frustrations and where, for the time being, the effect on technology is more fruitful than the outcome of the original far-reaching projects. That transplant rejection was defined, in most of its stages, as an immunologic process, has given many new impulses to immunology in general. Transplantation assays have become a pet experiment in immunobiology and an abundant source of general information and knowledge. The implications of such a development could not be predicted when the present volume was outlined and planned. In accordance with the concept of WILLI MASSHOFF, general transplantion pathology was given a central position as a fundamental science, while the chapters on the transplantation of various tissues are of a more paradigmatic character. It was MASSHOFF who invited competent authors and who managed to balance their articles, despite some overlapping, so as to draw a comprehensive picture of contemporary transplanta tion pathology. WILLI MASSHOFF died while he was editing the first manuscripts. As co-editors we have undertaken to complete the publication that we began together.

Book Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research

Download or read book Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, experiments using chimpanzees have been instrumental in advancing scientific knowledge and have led to new medicines to prevent life-threatening and debilitating diseases. However, recent advances in alternate research tools have rendered chimpanzees largely unnecessary as research subjects. The Institute of Medicine, in collaboration with the National Research Council, conducted an in-depth analysis of the scientific necessity for chimpanzees in NIH-funded biomedical and behavioral research. The committee concludes that while the chimpanzee has been a valuable animal model in the past, most current biomedical research use of chimpanzees is not necessary, though noted that it is impossible to predict whether research on emerging or new diseases may necessitate chimpanzees in the future.

Book Pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases in memoriam Detlef Zillikens

Download or read book Pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases in memoriam Detlef Zillikens written by Ralf J. Ludwig and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-19 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases are a heterogenous group of autoimmune blistering disorders (AIBD) characterized by tissue-bound and circulating autoantibodies against structural proteins of the desmosome and basement membrane zone of the skin and orifice-close mucosal tissues. While strong evidence has been provided that autoantibodies in AIBD are pathogenic, the exact mechanisms of how blister formation is mediated is very different between pemphigus and pemphigoid disorders and yet incompletely understood. Additionally, target antigens for the major AIBDs have already been identified on the molecular level. In contrast, diagnostic assays are not yet available for all autoantibody specificities and isotypes. Treatment also greatly relies on long-term unspecific immunosuppressants, although rituximab has greatly improved the outcome for patients with moderate and severe pemphigus. There is currently still a need to identify key pathophysiological mediators and pathways for the development of more specific, safer, and more effective treatment options. This Research Topic will honor the work of the late Detlef Zillikens, who has dedicated over 30 years to the field of AIBD and has authored more than 600 articles. We strongly encourage the submission of articles from colleagues and researchers who have collaborated with Prof. Zillikens in the past, however, we will also consider manuscripts from other authors. We would particularly like articles to cite Prof. Zillikens work wherever it is appropriate. We welcome the submission of original research and review articles that cover, but are not limited to, the following sub-topics: • autoantibody specificities • diagnostic assays • in vitro or in vivo studies about the effect of autoantibodies and their modulation • epidemiology and treatment of AIBD Reports of individual cases are discouraged Dr. Enno Schmidt receives grant funding from Euroimmun, Incyte, Dompe, Admirx, Synthon/biondis, Bayer, Pharmix, Alpine Immune, AstraZeneca, Sanofi, ArgenX, UCB, Novartis, Biotest, Fresenius Medical Care, and is consulting for Roche, Imevax, Thermo Fisher, Janssen, Topas, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Almirall, and Chugai.
