Download or read book Human Hyperlipoproteinemias Principles and Methods written by R. Fumagalli and published by Springer. This book was released on 1973-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Istituto Superiore di Sanita" was glad to join the Italian Society for the Study of Atherosclerosis and the Fondazione Giovanni Lorenzini in the organization of the Second International Course on Human Hyperlipoproteinemias. The theoretical part of the Course included contributions by outstanding Italian and foreign experts who lectured on various fundamental aspects of the problem. The Institute endeavored to provide adequate facilities for the practical sessions of the Course which was so structured as to give an essential, and as far as possible comprehensive, overview of the laboratory techniques necessary for the classification of hyperlipoproteinemias. Several research workers of the Institute contributed their knowledge and long-standing practical experience in the field of lipid metabolism, their aim being to improve methods of analysis and to devise new ones. Professor R. Angelico was the tireless co-ordinator of the practical part of the Seminar. Such a contribution falls within the scope of the manyfold activities of the Institute in view of the ever-growing importance of the standardization of analytical methods in Clinical Pathology, which is one of the major concerns of our public health institutions, together with pollution control, food and drug supervision, and disease prevention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It can honestly be said that the scope and magnitude of this meeting surpassed initial expectations with respect to the number and quality of the papers presented. Our group has grown since we last met in Dortmund in 1971. This is a good indication that a spiraling of our interests has taken place with the effects of the initial good work felt, not just in one corner of the globe, but in all four. With such a start, it was only appropriate that an international society was formed at the meeting to further coordinate our mutual undertaking. Henceforth it shall be known as the International Society of Oxygen Transport to Tissue. A final note of acknowledgement should be made to those who were in the supporting cast, not only in making the meeting in Charleston and Clemson a success, but also in the compiling of this book. Gratitude is due to Dr. Daniel H. Hunt for his efforts, the end product of which you have in your hands. Considerable service was rendered by Mr. Robert J. Adams, Mr. Buddy Bell and Mr. Nathan Kaufman during the symposium itself. Much typing, organizing and record keeping was done by our lovely secretaries, Laura B. Grove, Muff Graham and Kaye Y. Zook.

Book Current Topics in Coronary Research

Download or read book Current Topics in Coronary Research written by Colin Bloor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can you adequately honor a man of deeds with mere words? Dr. Donald Eaton Gregg is recognized throughout the scientific world for his distinguished contributions to our knowledge of the coronary circulation, his advances in experimental instrumentation and design, his scientific integrity and his lasting influence on other investigators. His research associates over the years are now liberally scattered over the entire world. Their accomplishments and activities reflect the quality of their training in his Department of Cardiorespiratory Diseases at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The positions of prestige occupied by these men attest to Dr. Gregg's ability to select and inspire men of talent, yet in his usual modest way he insists that he was only fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. Thus, at the time of Dr. Gregg's retirement as Chief of the Department of Cardiorespiratory Diseases, a position he has held since 1950, his associates thought that a scientific symposium was the most appropriate way to honor a man of his stature. Accordingly, on March 29-30, 1973 a Symposium on Current Topics in Coronary Research was held at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Its objectives were to define our present state of knowl edge and, more importantly, define the basic questions requiring further experimentation in four major areas of coronary research, i. e.

Book Immobilized Biochemicals and Affinity Chromatography

Download or read book Immobilized Biochemicals and Affinity Chromatography written by R. Dunlap and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the papers presented at the Sym posium on Affinity Chromatography and Immobilized Biochemicals, which was held on November 7-9, 1973 in Charleston, South Carolina in conjunction with the Southeastern Regional American Chemical Society meeting. The topics of the symposium represent two new biochemical frontiers which have emerged in recent years through the ingenious development and application of solid phase biochemi cal technologies. Affinity chromatography involves the use of selected ligands, covalently bound to a solid support such as cel lulose, glass, Sepharose, or polyacrylamide and exploits the princi ple of biochemical recognition between the ligand in the solid phase and a selected macromolecule to facilitate the rapid and often quantitative purification of enzymes, antibodies, antigens, hormones, other proteins, etc. The area of immobilized biochemicals includes the use of coenzymes, oligo- and po1ynuc1eotides, enzymes, and multistep enzyme systems which are immobilized or entrapped in the solid phase. The goals of the symposium were the revi~w of the status of affinity chromatography and immobilized biochemicals, the presentation of new data and ideas in both areas, and the establish ment of a dialogue between research workers in these two evolving disciplines which are so closely interrelated. The papers published in this volume provide the reader with reviews of several topics inherent in the solid phase biochemistry together with a series of timely manuscripts concerning new techniques and applications both in the use of affinity chromatography and in the investigation of immobilized biochemicals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles published in this volume are based on the papers del ivered at a conference on the Role of Metal Ions in Biological Systems held November 20 and 21, 1972, at Argonne National Laboratory. The purpose of the conference was to present to an interdiscipl inary audience of physical scientists some recent developments illustrating the chemical and environ mental participation of the heavy metal ions in the biological system. The invited speakers at the conference are special ists in the fields they describe, and the articles presented here are at a level of interest to readers with backgrounds in physical sciences who are not necessari Iy doing research in the areas described. The articles are referenced through 1972, and in some cases early 1973, and thus should also be of value to research workers. It is hoped that the book wi II be of particular interest to chemists, biologists, workers in the fields of en vironmental science and publ ic health, as wei I as graduate and senior undergraduate students in these discipl ines. The conference was sponsored by the Central States Universities, Inc. , a consortium of sixteen midwestern univer sities, the Center for Educational Affairs, Argonne National Laboratory, and the United States Atomic Energy Commission. It is my pleasure to thank the members of the conference committee for their ideas and active help in organizing the conference.

Book Purine Metabolism in Man

  • ISBN : 1475714335
  • Pages : 453 pages

Download or read book Purine Metabolism in Man written by Oded Sperling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gout and urie acid lithiasis are known to have affected mankind for thousands of years. It is only recently, however, that great progress has been made in the understanding of the processes involved in purine metabolism and its disorders in man. The key enzymes active in the various pathways of purine synthesis and degradation have become known and their properties are the subject of intensive study. Major contributions to the knowledge of normal purine metabolism in man have derived from the study of inborn errors in patients with purine disorders, specifically complete and partial hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency. Mutations of other enzymes involved in purine metabolism are being discovered. A great step forward has been made in the treatment of gout with the introduction of uricosuric drugs and more recently of the hypoxanthine analogue allopurinol, a synthetic xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Furthermore, the complex nature of the renal handling of urie acid excretion, although still posing difficult problems, appears to approach clari fication.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Plasma Lipoproteins written by Antonio M. Gotto and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1987 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rapidly evolving field of research, an enormous amount of new knowledge of lipoprotein structure, function and metabolism has emerged. The 1985 Nobel Prize-winning pioneering work of Brown and Goldstein on the LDL receptor has had a profound impact on developments in the field. This work is one of the many subjects reviewed in detail in this book. The volume begins with chapters on structure, then proceeds to analysis of lipid and lipoprotein dynamics, metabolism, function, genetics, and molecular biology. Lipoprotein genetics in molecular biology, the role of lipoprotein receptors, and Lp(a) - a topic underrepresented in volumes on lipoproteins, are another three such topics in an impressive volume. This work will mainly be of interest to researchers interested in lipid and lipoprotein structure and metabolism, but will also be of great value to clinical medicine and biology in general.

Book Arterial Mesenchyme and Arteriosclerosis

Download or read book Arterial Mesenchyme and Arteriosclerosis written by William Wagner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presently, and in the past, the predominant investigative emphasis among research workers in arteriosclerosis has been on plasma and arterial lipids. Recent data from a number of laboratories suggest that arterial mesenchyme is of considerable importance in the pathogenesis and fate of arteriosclerotic lesions. The significance of some of these observations made it clear that there was need for intensified research on the connective tissue components of the arteriosclerotic lesion and that arteriosclerosis research workers could benefit from a more comprehensive view of the subject. Because of their experience in the field of arteriosclerosis and their interest in stimulating new directions for research on the lesion, the Committee on Coronary Artery Lesions and Myocardial Infarctions of the Council on Arteriosclerosis, American Heart Association, planned an International Workshop on Arterial Mesenchyme and Arteriosclerosis. The Workshop brought together scientists expert in connective tissue research and research on arteriosclerosis who presented the current status of knowledge in their areas of expertise. The Workshop was held April 2-3, 1973 at the Royal Orleans Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana and was attended by more than 170 people. The twenty papers and discussions presented in this volume summarize the proceedings of the Workshop and represent a comprehensive review of the role of arterial mesenchyme in arteriosclerosis.
