Book Human Health Risk Assessment of Unregulated Organic Compounds in New Jersey Drinking Water

Download or read book Human Health Risk Assessment of Unregulated Organic Compounds in New Jersey Drinking Water written by Diann Lynne Blanset and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable quantities of organic chemicals are used by industry and consumers each year in the United States, creating the potential for contamination of limited fresh water supplies with a wide variety of organic chemicals. Although drinking water standards have been established for many organic chemicals, there is a potential for contamination of water sources with unregulated chemicals. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), in conjunction with Rutgers University, has conducted a survey of public drinking water systems and has detected over 600 unregulated organic compounds in water samples from these systems. To evaluate the potential human health effects from drinking water exposure to these chemicals, a review of the scientific literature for toxicology data was conducted during this project. Toxicology data were not available for the majority of the chemicals, limiting the ability to assess the potential human health effects from drinking water exposure. Sufficient data were available to establish health based water criteria for 40 chemicals. The calculated drinking water criteria for these chemicals were greater than 1 ppb indicating that the chemicals are unlikely to present a risk to human health when present in drinking water at concentrations

Book Drinking Water Health Advisory

Download or read book Drinking Water Health Advisory written by Jennifer Orme-Zavaleta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Advisories (HAs) are prepared by the Criteria and Standards Division, Office of Drinking Water (ODW) of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in Washington, D.C. Documents summarized in this volume are part of the Health Advisory Program sponsored by ODW in response to the public need for guidance during emergency situations involving drinking water contamination. They provide technical guidance to public health officials on health effects, analytical methodologies, and treatment technologies associated with drinking water contamination. The HAs for 15 unregulated volatile organic chemicals were developed jointly by the Environmental Criteria and Assessment Office and ODW. Each HA contains information regarding the nature of adverse health effects associated with the contaminant and contaminant concentrations that would not be anticipated to cause an adverse effect following various periods of exposure. In addition, the HA summarizes information on occurrence, analytical methods, environmental fate, and treatment techniques for the contaminant.

Book The Cumulative Risk of Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey Surface Water to Human Health

Download or read book The Cumulative Risk of Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey Surface Water to Human Health written by Nicholas Michael Roden and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface water in New Jersey is used to supply many residential drinking water facilities. In the surface water, there are contaminants from industrial and residential sources, one set of these contaminants being pharmaceuticals. This research looks at the concentrations of 18 pharmaceuticals in 30 locations in New Jersey, their acceptable daily exposures, and potential drug-drug interactions. The surface water sampling and analytical concentration determination was done by United States Geological survey (USGS) personnel according to their protocols and analyzed in a USGS laboratory. Acceptable daily exposures (ADE) for human health were set for each pharmaceutical in the study. Each pair of pharmaceuticals was researched for known adverse health interactions and their potential impact on human health was quantified. This interaction factor ranged from 0.4 times to 5.0 times the adverse effect, as measured in some cases by plasma levels in man. These factors were brought together using a cumulative hazard index risk assessment calculation to assess the overall risk of pharmaceuticals in surface water to human health. The cumulative risk was assessed for each of the 30 sample locations, and none reached the level of human health concern. When including the potential from drug-drug interactions in the assessment, the risk did increase but not an appreciable amount. The Hazard Index (HI) for the sample locations ranged from

Book Anthropogenic Organic Compounds in Source Water of Nine Community Water Systems That Withdraw from Streams 2002 05

Download or read book Anthropogenic Organic Compounds in Source Water of Nine Community Water Systems That Withdraw from Streams 2002 05 written by James A. Kingsbury and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Source water, herein defined as stream water collected at a water-system intake prior to water treatment, was sampled at nine community water systems, ranging in size from a system serving about 3,000 people to one that serves about 2 million people. As many as 17 source-water samples were collected at each site over about a 12-month period between 2002 and 2004 for analysis of 258 anthropogenic organic compounds. Most of these compounds are unregulated in drinking water, and the compounds analyzed include pesticides and selected pesticide degradates, gasoline hydrocarbons, personal-care and domestic-use compounds, and solvents. About one-half (134) of the compounds were detected at least once in source-water samples.

Book Environmental Epidemiology Volume 1

Download or read book Environmental Epidemiology Volume 1 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of hazardous waste in the United States has been estimated at 275 million metric tons in licensed sites alone. Book Perfluorinated Chemicals PFCs

Download or read book Perfluorinated Chemicals PFCs written by Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume provides a timely study on the environmental challenges from a specific class of perfluorinated chemical compounds (PFCs) that are now being recognized as a worldwide health threat. Recent studies report that levels of classes of PFCs known as polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl (PFASs) exceed federally recommended safety levels in public drinking-water supplies for 6 million people in the United States and that as many as 100 million people could be at risk from exposure to these chemicals. These chemicals occur globally in wildlife and humans. Both PFCAs and PFSAs have been produced for more than 50 years, but have only become of interest to regulators and environmentalists since the late 1990s. Recent advances in analytical methodology has enabled widespread detection in the environment and humans at trace levels. These toxic chemicals have been found in outdoor and indoor air, surface and drinking water, house dust, animal tissue, human blood serum, and human breast milk. Of great concern to communities is the presence of these compounds in a number of drinking water supplies in the U.S. and other countries. This new volume provides a timely explanation of the chemicals, provides a detailed review of the regulations both in the US and European Community, explains the health risk literature, and then explores in great detail available treatment technologies. The volume is a must for public water supply facilities, industrial operations that have historically used these chemicals and face legacy pollution issues, policy makers and the general public.
