Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man and the Earth: A Simple Reader in Human Geography You all know that in England it is warmer in summer than in winter. Perhaps you have also noticed that the shadow cast by a stick at noon, when the sun is shining, is not always the same length. On mid-summer day the shadow is the shortest, while the shadow cast by the same stick on mid-winter's day is the longest. If you draw a line the same length as the stick, and another at right-angles to it the same length as the shadow, and then join the ends, you will have a line which shows the direction the rays of light and heat take in coming from the sun to the earth. Book Human Geography in Western Europe

Download or read book Human Geography in Western Europe written by H. J. Fleure and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Geography in Western Europe: A Study in Appreciation This book contains a selection of the con tents of lectures and discussions in a class in Human Geography at Aberystwyth during the last ten years. In such Work as this every limitation of the Writer inevitably makes itself felt, and yet, as it is of the nature of an appreciation rather than of a professedly complete study, the personal note is a necessity. It may be said to be an early draft of an attempt to appreciate the genius loci of some of the human groups Which have become accustomed to live and act as such in Western Europe. It tries to visualise those groups with their varied racial elements making their several contributions Within each, While the group as a Whole in turn makes its cumulative contribution to What may become a community of civilisation. The effort is therefore made to study human experience in each region in concrete fashion, With attention directed continuously both to man and to his environment, and this, it is urged, is an essential task of the geographer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Human Geography of the British Isles Climate. The average conditions of wind, rainfall, dampness, and temperature. Weather. The actual conditions of temperature, wind, and rainfall experienced. The general conditions affecting the climate of a region are (1) its latitude, (2) its nearness to the sea, (3) the ocean currents which wash its shores, (4) the winds which cross it, (5) the position of its mountains, (6) the height of the region above sea-level, and (7) the nature and slope of its surface. (I.) Latitude. - Generally speaking, the nearer one gets to the poles the colder the temperature becomes. The reasons for this are that nearer the poles: (a) The sun's rays strike the earth obliquely, and have to heat and light a much greater area than is the case with the rays reaching the earth near the equator. (b) To a much less extent the sun's rays have to pass through a thicker layer of air, and consequently lose more heat before reaching the earth, than is the case at the equator. People living on the coast, where there are good harbors, have very natu rally become interested in commerce, and throughout the land many are engaged in trade and transportation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Geography Modern geography has become a definite science. Its principles are so well defined that a knowledge of the physical conditions under which a race has lived and now lives gives a reasonably reliable indi cation as to the capacity, activity, Occupations, and business relap tions of that race. In studying this growing science the first step is to understand the main principles. That is the reason for Part I of this book. A second step is to apply the principles to concrete prob lems as is done in Part II. There the community engaged in a particular line of activity is taken as the unit in Order that the geographical relationships may first be studied in relatively simple forms before going on to the more complex regional studies of Parts III and IV. In the regional chapters the aim is to give a clear conception of the way in which geographic conditions influence the products of a region, the capacity of the people, the direction in which their activities are turned, and the nature and extent of their business relations with other regions.
