The prices paid to farmers for their grain crops were very low, and consequently most farmers in North America could not afford to buy a new tractor when needed; there fore, the sales of tractors and other farm machines were much below normal. The farmer who was the victim of the depressed economy was forced to "make do." Instead of purchasing a new tractor when the old one needed to be replaced, the farmer usually purchased a used or second-hand tractor or repaired the old one. In a strict sense, tractors usually do not wear out; instead, they become obsolete. The farmer who owns an obsolete tractor would prefer to replace it with one having more power, more speeds, more conveniences, a better hydraulic system, lower operating cost, or all of the above. But farmers in the United States, Canada, and other industrial nations will continue to want to purchase tractors that have all of the features, in cluding microprocessors, found on other vehicles.

Book excerpt: For this work, a tractor driving simulator was designed, constructed and programmed in order to address tractor rollover safety in the context of alerting operators before an incident occurs. Three experiments were conducted. The first assesses the accuracy and precision of human perception of near-rollover tilt angles. The second measures the responsiveness of operators to different alert interfaces in the highly distracting environment of a tractor cabin. The third experiment estimates how much influence an alert system can have in persuading operators to reduce their rollover risk exposure. Quantitative answers to these questions will allow engineers to conceive better driver assistance devices to prevent tractor rollover. Most rollover research has centered on the physics of how a tractor rolls over, while this thesis focuses on the combined modeling of the human operator and vehicle on steep slopes. To that effect, this work will show how the design of instability monitoring systems can be treated as a closed-loop feedback control problem with the driver in the loop. Specifically, using an internal model of the driver-alert interaction, alerts can be issued accounting for the operator's risk assessment, previewed threats and tractor dynamics. The main contribution of this thesis will be to advance our understanding of the human factors relevant to the prevention of rollover incidents in farm tractors, and then use that information to formulate a predictive instability alert system that helps tractor operators avoid high-risk operating conditions.
