Book Human Factors and Safety Assessment M1A1 Abrams 120 Mm Gun Tank Follow on Evaluation

Download or read book Human Factors and Safety Assessment M1A1 Abrams 120 Mm Gun Tank Follow on Evaluation written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research note describes the MANPRINT assessment which forms part of the Follow-On Evaluation (FOE) of the M1A1 main battle tank conducted at Fort Bliss from December 1986 through August 1987 by the Army Operational Test and Evaluation Agency. MANPRINT evaluation support was provided by the Army Research Institute's Fort Hood Field Unit. The M1A1 FOE was conducted using 41 of the tanks assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry, and their crews. Data for the assessment were obtained through structured interviews, questionnaires, observation of squadron operations and evaluation of calibration/gunnery performance of crews during the FOE. The primary issues investigated were: ease of calibration of M1A1 main armament, logistic supportability, and NBC system operations. Inquiry was also made as to the number of previously identified MANPRINT/human factors deficiencies uncorrected in the production version. Significant findings during the FOE were: insufficient refueling capacity in the tested support platoon, low reliability of the Simplified Test Equipment, when used in high ambient temperature conditions, and an NBC backup system which does not filter out carbon monoxide gas (a deficiency discovered during the M1E1 operational test II in 1984).

Book Human Factors and Safety Assessment of Army Systems

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the human factors and safety assessment support provided to the U.S. Army Operational Test and Evaluation Agency (OTEA) during the planning and conduct of Follow-On Test and Evaluations (FOTE) of the M1A1 tank and the AN/TRC-170 Troposcatter Radio, the planning phase of the Mobile Subscriber Equipment (MSE) test, and the data collection phase of the SINCGARS V test. The findings of this report provide lessons learned for addressing MANPRINT issues during the operational testing of hardware systems. These lessons learned indicate ways MANPRINT can be better integrated into test planning and execution. Human factors and safety-related deficiencies that prevent fully satisfactory system performance are identified for the M1A1 tank and the AN/TRC-170 Radio.

Book Human Factors Evaluation of the M1 Combat Tank in Operational Test III

Download or read book Human Factors Evaluation of the M1 Combat Tank in Operational Test III written by William K. Earl and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Army Battle Tank Operational Test III (XM1 OT III) was conducted at Fort Hood, TX from September 1980 through May 1981. It was a comprehensive test of low rate initial production (LRIP) M1 tanks operated by members of a standard Army tank battalion in live-firing and non-firing field exercises. The test was designed to provide data and analyses of the capabilities of LRIP M1 tanks in an operational environment. The results were for use in the decision of whether or not to place the M1 tank system into full-scale production and fielding. The test agent for XM1 OT III was the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command's Combined Arms Test Activity (TCATA). The purpose of the human factors test objective was to provide data to determine if problems observed previously during XM1 OT II (March 1979) on prototype tanks had been corrected on the LRIP tanks and to identify additional needed modifications. The scope of the effort was to include the following activities: assess the ability of the tank commander to function in the M1's commander's weapon station; administer questionnaires to all crew members to obtain data on human factors engineering design considerations; collect performance data on the times required to accomplish loader's tasks involving loading and transferring main-gun ammunition.

Book Human Factors Testing and Evaluation

Download or read book Human Factors Testing and Evaluation written by D. Meister and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1986 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human factors measurement has characteristics that set it apart from psychological or engineering measurement and for that reason, human factors testing and evaluation deserves special treatment. The many excellent texts available in the behavioral area do not give an adequate picture of this topic, and this is particularly unfortunate because testing and evaluation (T&E) is an integral part of human-machine system design and operation. The emphasis in this book is on why and how to conduct such testing. One of its outstanding features is its pragmatism; based on his past experience in system testing, the author recognizes the difficulties that occur in testing and indicates how these may be overcome or minimized. Special attention has been paid to the context in which T&E is conducted. Although the book contains detailed procedures for performing T&E, the logic and the conceptual foundation of testing have not been overlooked. Comparisons are made with laboratory-centered experimentation. For those with research interests, the author points out the many research questions that can be answered by system testing. An illustrative case history of a T&E program for a fictional system has been included to provide ``real life'' context. Special problem areas in T&E are emphasized, in particular human error data collection, the evaluation of computerized systems and software, the measurement of maintenance technician and team performance; workload and training effectiveness testing. Special attention is also paid to environmental testing (e.g. temperature, lighting, noise, vibration, etc.). One chapter reviews all the relevant T&E literature including government documents that may not be readily available to the general reader. As part of the preparation for writing this text a survey was made of 45 distinguished T&E specialists in order to determine their characteristic T&E practices. The book will be useful not only to the human factors professional who specializes in T&E, but to all students and practitioners interested in human factors and work measurement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine carried out a study mandated by Congress and sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide an assessment of several issues related to noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus associated with service in the Armed Forces since World War II. The resulting book, Noise and Military Service: Implications for Hearing Loss and Tinnitus, presents findings on the presence of hazardous noise in military settings, levels of noise exposure necessary to cause hearing loss or tinnitus, risk factors for noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus, the timing of the effects of noise exposure on hearing, and the adequacy of military hearing conservation programs and audiometric testing. The book stresses the importance of conducting hearing tests (audiograms) at the beginning and end of military service for all military personnel and recommends several steps aimed at improving the military services' prevention of and surveillance for hearing loss and tinnitus. The book also identifies research needs, emphasizing topics specifically related to military service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf War bore witness to a number of deadly encounters between these two great adversaries. Heavily armoured, highly mobile and capable of killing at over 2500m the M1 Abrams is, to this day, a veritable fighting machine. Superior to both Iraq's Soviet era T-55 and T-62 tanks, nearly all sources claim that no Abrams tank has ever been destroyed by enemy fire. Despite entering service in 1980, the M1 Abrams remained untested in combat until the Gulf War in 1991, where it was to be confronted by its archenemy the Iraqi-assembled Soviet-designed T-72. Entering production in 1971, the T-72 arguably outstripped its contemporaries in a balance of mobility, protection and firepower. By the time of Operation Desert Storm, however, the tables had turned and the tank suffered due to low quality ammunition and poorly trained crews. In this fascinating study, Steven Zaloga pits these two great fighting machines against one another, plotting the development of the Cold War until both tanks met in combat in the deserts of Iraq and Kuwait.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using humor and frank candor, author Bacil Donovan Warren shares his personal experience, as well as that of his fellow tankers, as part of the US Army's 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment (the "Brave Rifles") in Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Warren recounts the initial shock of hearing about Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and his Regiment's preparation for deployment during Operation Desert Shield. He describes the stress and sometimes mind-numbing boredom of being deployed deep in the desert of Saudi Arabia, constantly preparing for a possible Iraqi invasion. He recalls the terrifying experience of the start of the air war of Operation Desert Storm and the workmanlike action during combat against Iraq's Republican Guard forces during Operation Desert Sabre. With It or in It brings clarity and focus to their unceasing efforts to bring the conflict to a swift and decisive end. Finally, Warren describes the triumphant return of the Brave Rifles to Ft. Bliss, Texas, and the waiting arms of their families and loved ones.
