Book Human Elephant Conflict Mitigation Initiatives

Download or read book Human Elephant Conflict Mitigation Initiatives written by Ghouse S Mohammed and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elephants are parts of culture and mythology in India.Conflict between man and elephant is not new. Rather it's as old as the human civilization itself.Globally, wild elephants are present in 50 countries, India holds the largest population of wild Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) with nearly 27,000-29,000 animals. Human habitation is fast closing on the boundary of many National Parks and Sanctuaries in India. Shrinking space, shortage of food often forces wild animals towards populated areas. Each year, human-elephant conflict results in about 300 human deaths and damage to 10,000-15,000 houses and 8-10 million hectares of crops, while over 200 elephants die due to human-related activities, which include poaching for ivory or meat, poisoning, electrocution and collision with trains. Forests have been severely destroyed degraded, decimated, fragmented to make space for agricultural, industry, mines and dams. People affected by carnivores & herbivore are predominantly poor/ rural people where as polices are made by the urban people who are rarely affected. Establishment of elephant corridors, conservation education and public awareness is need of the hour for their conservation.

Book Mitigating Human Elephant Conflict Local People s Perspective

Download or read book Mitigating Human Elephant Conflict Local People s Perspective written by Julie Makomere and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitigating Human-Elephant Conflict illustrates how ideas and perspectives of the local community can influence mitigation project implementation in areas prone to high Human-Elephant conflicts. The main focus is how the local community, who are the key stakeholders in the tourism industry, respond to the initiatives that are aimed at minimizing the conflicts which, unfortunately, increase daily in areas adjacent to wildlife reserves. The wildlife serves as an important component of tourists attraction in many developing countries. The elephant is rated among the most valuable animal species in social, economic and ecological aspects. For sustainable tourism development, the local community's perspective towards project implementation is a prerequisite in its success. The causes of Human-Elephant conflicts are well known by the local community and with well established mitigation initiatives, harmonious coexistence between the local community and elephants is possible.

Book Community Based Human Elephant Conflict Mitigation Project

Download or read book Community Based Human Elephant Conflict Mitigation Project written by George Ariya and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mara ecosystem supports a refuge of elephant population which has caused conflict with the local people as a result of introduction of crop farming. Crop damage by elephant reduced local tolerance towards elephants leading to negative attitudes and perceptions. A research project was started by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE) to mitigate conflict. However, the impact of the project on the local community towards elephants has never been assessed. This study aimed at assessing whether the attitudes and perceptions of the Transmara (TM) community towards elephant conservation have changed following the establishment of the human-elephant conflict mitigation project. The results indicated that attitudes and perceptions of the respondents towards elephant conservation have improved in recent years. Moreover, the respondents had positive attitude towards WWF elephant mitigation project in TM District. Community-based tourism development was also considered as one of the ways that could be used to reduce conflict. In conclusion, the study reveals the importance of project evaluation as a measure of project success.

Book Man Elephant Conflict

Download or read book Man Elephant Conflict written by Nilanjana Das Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the causes and consequences of elephant migration in the Panchet Forest Division of Bankura District in West Bengal, India- an area characterized by fragmented forested landscape modified by agriculture and settlement expansion. Anthropogenic activities result in the decline in quality and coverage of forests, loss of biodiversity and removal of forest corridors which ultimately restrict or modify the movement of elephants causing a forceful change of their habitats. A major objective of this monograph is to identify the characteristics of man–elephant conflicts in terms of land use change, cropping patterns, ecological characteristics of the fragmented dry deciduous forest, trends and patterns of elephant migration, and livelihood patterns of the inhabitants in the affected areas. Readers will discover insights into changes in the behavioral pattern of elephants and local people in the conflict ridden zones, and how this influences food selection. Through this book we also learn about rational management strategies that can be employed on the local and national level to mitigate human-elephant conflicts. Ecologists, landscape conservation planners and environmental managers engaged in the conservation of large vertebrates in fragmenting and human-dominated landscapes will find this book valuable.

Book Analyses of Mitigation Strategies of Human elephant Conflicts in the Coimbatore Forest Division India

Download or read book Analyses of Mitigation Strategies of Human elephant Conflicts in the Coimbatore Forest Division India written by Anne Nicole Reed and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous human-elephant conflict (HEC) incidents occur throughout India, especially in ecological hotspots or sensitive zones. The Coimbatore Forest Division (CFD) located in southern India has witnessed an increase in HEC incidents over the past several decades. Habitat fragmentation and land conversion are forcing the elephants out of their ranges in search of food and water. Crop fields are frequently targeted by the elephants given the ease of access and high quality of food. Farmers have tried methods such as physical barriers (trenching, electric and non-electric fences) or ecological barriers (planting cactus and other plants, smearing chili paste on fences, and noise-techniques) to prevent elephants from raiding their crops. However, elephants overcome these barriers and destroy crops which results in loss of income for farmers and an increased risk of conflict between the two. Studies have looked at the origin and current status of HECs, but none have looked at the effectiveness of the approaches aimed at preventing crop raids. This study utilized surveys in the CFD to gain valuable insights from stakeholders to help identify drivers as well as possible management techniques to assist with the HECs. This study also investigated land cover changes using remotely sensed data acquired in 2001 and 2018. Results from this study will allow stakeholders and land managers to make effective decisions regarding HEC mitigation strategies.

Book People and Wildlife Conflict or Co existence

Download or read book People and Wildlife Conflict or Co existence written by Rosie Woodroffe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human-wildlife conflict is a major issue in conservation. As people encroach into natural habitats, and as conservation efforts restore wildlife to areas where they may have been absent for generations, contact between people and wild animals is growing. Some species, even the beautiful and endangered, can have serious impacts on human lives and livelihoods. Tigers kill people, elephants destroy crops and African wild dogs devastate sheep herds left unattended. Historically, people have responded to these threats by killing wildlife wherever possible, and this has led to the endangerment of many species that are difficult neighbours. The urgent need to conserve such species, however, demands coexistence of people and endangered wildlife. This book presents a variety of solutions to human-wildlife conflicts, including novel and traditional farming practices, offsetting the costs of wildlife damage through hunting and tourism, and the development of local and national policies.

Book Land Cover Change and Its Effect on Human Elephant Conflicts

Download or read book Land Cover Change and Its Effect on Human Elephant Conflicts written by Kudzai Kusena and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Land cover change is a characteristic reflection of human society interacting with physical environment. The Zimbabwe-Mozambique-Zambia Trans-boundary Natural Resources Management Area is a human settled area endowed with a variety of wildlife and wild lands. Human-elephant conflicts occur whenever these two species inhabit the same area, posing serious threat on elephant conservation. We mapped the extent of land cover changes over a 19-year period (1989, 2001, and 2008). Landsat satellite images were analyzed to interpret and detect spatial and temporal land cover changes. Community perception on human-elephant conflicts and the role of conservation policies were captured and analyzed. Deforestation, cultivation, and human-elephant conflicts increased over the period under review and forest classes decreased while the cultivation class increased. Human-elephant conflict hot spots increased, predominantly in areas where cultivation, settlement, and water sources coincide. Agricultural extensification coupled with weak policing, poor user rights, and pseudo power devolution were issues noted affecting conservation initiatives."
