Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Efficiency and Levels of Intelligence Moreover if the views set forth in these lectures are in the main sound then it is quite possible to restate practically all of our social problems in terms of mental level. For example, what could be done with labor and wages? Suppose we say men should be paid first according to their intelligence; and second according to their labor: e.g., "D" men are worth and should receive "D" wages; C men C wages (which are higher), etc. If a certain job requires D intelligence, D men should be employed at D wages. If there are not enough D men, C men must be employed at C wages. And it may be relied upon that they will be worth the difference because of their greater intelligence. If, of two jobs each requiring D intelligence, one is more agreeable than the other and hence draws all the D men, the conditions must be evened up as far as possible by changing hours, etc., and then by increasing the pay for the less desirable job. A little experimenting would equalize the two jobs so that all would be satisfied. Doubtless other adjustments would be found necessary. Sternberg invites the nineteen most highly cited psychological scientists in the leading textbooks on human intelligence to share their research programs and findings. Each chapter answers a standardized set of questions on the measurement, investigation, and development of intelligence - and the outcome represents a wide range of substantive and methodological emphases including psychometric, cognitive, expertise-based, developmental, neuropsychological, genetic, cultural, systems, and group-difference approaches. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What determines human intelligence? What is its relationship to creativity? Its potential for change? To illuminate some of these questions, J. McVicker Hunt has gathered together a number of essays previously published in fra/jsaction magazine. This volume contains some of the answers that have been found, out emphasizes that we still need to learn a great deal about developing ways to assess our human resources. We remain, for example, uncertain about what abilities pinpoint intelligence, and the extent to which intellectual aoility can predict classroom success--or even the ability to perform a job well. Articles in this book sl'ow that indications of heritability have nothing to say about the educabiliry of individuals or classes or races. Investigations indicate that there is a great deal more plasticity in the development of behavior and abilities thnn was presumed by those who believe in predetermined intelligence. They also indicate that knowledge and ability both grow during the early years; knowledge grows throughout life; but the ability to acquire new knowledge These areas of developing knowledge are of political as well as social significance. Any attempts to upgrade the abilities of the poor or the disadvantaged must necessarily be concerned with manipulation of the environment. These articles represent the most advanced available information about the relationship of experience, environment and heredity to the development of measurable intelligence.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence and Cognitive Neuroscience

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence and Cognitive Neuroscience written by Aron K. Barbey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook introduces the reader to the thought-provoking research on the neural foundations of human intelligence. Written for undergraduate or graduate students, practitioners, and researchers in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and related fields, the chapters summarize research emerging from the rapidly developing neuroscience literature on human intelligence. The volume focusses on theoretical innovation and recent advances in the measurement, modelling, and characterization of the neurobiology of intelligence differences, especially from brain imaging studies. It summarizes fundamental issues in the characterization and measurement of general intelligence, and surveys multidisciplinary research consortia and large-scale data repositories for the study of general intelligence. A systematic review of neuroimaging methods for studying intelligence is provided, including structural and diffusion-weighted MRI techniques, functional MRI methods, and spectroscopic imaging of metabolic markers of intelligence.
