Download or read book White Devils Black Gods written by Christopher M. Driscoll and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interweaving academic theory, (auto)ethnography, and memoir-styled narrative, Christopher M. Driscoll explores what the “white devil” trope means for understanding and responding to tensions emerging from toxic white masculinity. The book provides a historical and philosophical account of the “white devil” as it appears in the stories and myths of various black religious and philosophical traditions, particularly as these traditions are expressed through the contemporary cultural expression of hip-hop. Driscoll argues that the trope of the white devil emerges from a self-hatred in many white men that is concealed (and revealed) through various defence mechanisms – principally, anger – and the book provides rich ground to discuss the relationship between perceptions of self (i.e. who we are), emotional regulation, and our behaviour towards others (i.e. how we act).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supernatural phenomena and causalities played an important role in medieval society. Religious practice was relying upon a set of cult images and the sacral status of these depictions of divine or supernatural persons became the object of heated debates and provoked iconoclastic reactions. The miraculous intervention of saints or other divine agents, the wondrous realities beyond understanding, or the manifestations of magic attributed to diabolic forces, were contained by a variety of discourses, described and discussed in religion, philosophy, chronicles, literature and fiction, and also in a large number of pictures and material objects. The nine essays in this collection discusses how supernatural phenomena – especially angels and devils – found visual manifestation in Latin and Eastern Christianity as well as Judaism in the late medieval, early renaissance period.

Book Devils Demons

Download or read book Devils Demons written by Amanda Forbes and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What compelled me to write about devils and demons is the fact that a door was opened to another world, where my living existence was placed. The book is original; it is mind blowing and chilling. I share true accounts of ghosts at play, and I sit in the center of the room sometimes in sci-fi definition. I talk about ghosts from centuries located in modern buildings that perhaps were memorial burial grounds before. I talk deeply about the spirit of King Richard III and the ghosts of the scariest hospital in Britain, the Towers Hospital. In this book, I discuss how to combat evil forces and give answers that nobody has done so far or answer questions that people have been too afraid to ask. It is a scary and exciting book, but most of all, its informative. So please read and enjoy.

Book Modern Folk Devils

  • Publisher : Helsinki University Press

Download or read book Modern Folk Devils written by Martin Demant Frederiksen and published by Helsinki University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devilish has long been integral to myths, legends, and folklore, firmly located in the relationships between good and evil, and selves and others. But how are ideas of evil constructed in current times and framed by contemporary social discourses? Modern Folk Devils builds on and works with Stanley Cohen’s theory on folk devils and moral panics to discuss the constructions of evil. The authors present an array of case-studies that illustrate how the notion of folk devils nowadays comes into play and animates ideas of otherness and evil throughout the world. Examining current fears and perceived threats, this volume investigates and analyzes how and why these devils are constructed. The chapters discuss how the devilish may take on many different forms: sometimes they exist only as a potential threat, other times they are a single individual or phenomenon or a visible group, such as refugees, technocrats, Roma, hipsters, LGBT groups, and rightwing politicians. Folk devils themselves are also given a voice to offer an essential complementary perspective on how panics become exaggerated, facts distorted, and problems acutely angled. Bringing together researchers from anthropology, sociology, political studies, ethnology, and criminology, the contributions examine cases from across the world spanning from Europe to Asia and Oceania.

Book Devils Women and Jews

Download or read book Devils Women and Jews written by Joan Young Gregg and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary misogyny and antisemitism have their roots in the demonization of women and Jews in medieval Christendom. In church art and mass preaching, the construct of the devil as an outcast from heaven and the source of all evil was linked both to the conception of women as sensual and malicious figures betraying man's soul on its arduous journey to salvation and to the notion of Jews as treacherous dissidents in the Christian landscape. These stereotypes, widely disseminated for over three hundred years, persist today. The exemplum, or cautionary story incorporated into preachers' manuals and popular homilies, was an important mode of religious teaching for clerical and lay folk alike. Sermon narratives drawn from Hindu mythology, Arab storytelling, and secular folktales entertained all classes of medieval society while dispensing theological and cultural instruction. In Devils, Women, and Jews, the vital genre of the medieval sermon story is, for the first time, made accessible to specialists and nonspecialists alike. Rendered in modern English, the tales provide an invaluable primary resource for medievalists, anthropologists, psychologists, folklorists, and students of women's studies and Judaica. Critical introductions and explanatory headnotes contextualize the tales, and comprehensive endnotes and a bibliography allow readers to follow up analogue and subject studies in their own areas of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is comprised of two substantial volumes of maxims entitled 'Maximum Truth' and 'Truthful Maxims', both of which, dating from 1993, extend the philosophy of Social Transcendentalism into new realms of metaphysical insight, including a more comprehensive subatomic theory that owes much to the structural quadruplicities of previous works, including 'Elemental Spectra', by the author. But it is in its departure from anything to do with the 'Clear Light of the Void', to which authors like Aldous Huxley succumbed, that this project stands out as a beacon of evolutionary enlightenment in relation to the 'Holy Spirit of Heaven'.

Book Demonology Demons Devils Spiritual Warfare

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have realised over the years that the Scriptures actually tells us a lot about Demons and devils, but that an intensive study of The Bible was nesecary to bring that particular knowledge to the front. I found through research other non-Biblical books that also refer to one and the same demons and devils we face. My aim was to write a comprehensive study guide to the world of demons/devils, what possible influence they have over us and importantly, how we can rid ourselves of these cursed beings so that we can live happy, spiritually fulfilled lives.I have managed to compile information I researched in such a way that it must make a difference in people's lives. After reading this book, one will be compelled to be more attentive towards certain things than before. One will also have a better understanding of God's plan with us and how we must live our lives.

Book The Hammer of Witches Malleus Maleficarum

Download or read book The Hammer of Witches Malleus Maleficarum written by Heinrich Kramer and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malleus Maleficarum or "Hammer of Witches" is the best known and the most important treatise on witchcraft. It endorses extermination of witches and for this purpose develops a detailed legal and theological theory. It was a bestseller, second only to the Bible in terms of sales for almost 200 years. It was written by the Catholic clergyman Heinrich Kramer and first published in 1487. The Malleus elevates sorcery to the criminal status of heresy and prescribes inquisitorial practices for secular courts in order to extirpate witches. The recommended procedures include torture to effectively obtain confessions and the death penalty as the only sure remedy against the evils of witchcraft. At that time, it was typical to burn heretics alive at the stake and the Malleus encouraged the same treatment of witches. The book had a strong influence on culture for several centuries. It was later used by royal courts during the Renaissance, and contributed to the increasingly brutal prosecution of witchcraft during the 16th and 17th centuries.
