Book excerpt: This book presents a multidimensional perspective on the interlinkage between human development, community characteristics and public service delivery with special reference to India. The chapters in the book analyze the influence of public service delivery on human development from neo-classical as well as Marxian point of view. Thus, the expositions in the book provides a balanced mix of macro and micro approaches in the study of development. The analytical discussions are supplemented by case studies and empirical estimates so as to demonstrate the applicability of the theory and the theoretical discourse about human development, community network and the success and failures of critical public services in the Indian context. The methodology followed in the chapters involves critical survey of existing literature, case studies, field survey and use of econometric techniques as well as statistical tools of index construction. While contributors are primarily scholars from neo-classical economics discipline, some are intellectuals from the field of political economy and development studies. Book The Dynamics of Human Development

Download or read book The Dynamics of Human Development written by Atanu Sengupta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the dynamic aspects of the Human Development Index (HDI) through a partial mobility perspective. It offers a new axiomatic structure and a set of mobility indices to discuss partial trends and interrogate the human development status at the subgroup and subregional levels. While traditional human development theories are primarily concerned with static distributions corresponding to a point in time, this book looks at an oft-neglected side of HDI and focuses on relative changes in human development that may not be captured by the absolutist framework. In addition, the authors also introduce the concepts of jump and fractional mobility which aid in tracking the development and stagnation among various groups within a population. This work breaks fresh ground in the study of human development. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of economics, development economics, political economy, and development practitioners.

Book India Human Development Report 2011

Download or read book India Human Development Report 2011 written by and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2011 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questioning whether certain sections of Indian society suffer from multiple deprivations, the Indian Human Development Report 2011 evaluates whether the social indicators of the excluded groups are converging or diverging with the rest of the population. The Report addresses three critical issues: (i) Do different social groups like the SCs, STs, and Muslims get excluded from the development process? (ii) Has India experienced inclusive growth in the true sense? (iii) How are flagship programmes/schemes of the government dealing with some of these concerns? Rich in data and analyses, this Report examines: human development index and profile for India and its states; economic attainment of the population, especially in terms of the two major sources of income-employment and assets; availability, access, and absorption of food and state of hunger and malnutrition; health indicators vis-a-vis inputs, processes, and outcomes; achievements and challenges in education; state of support infrastructure such as roads, electricity, housing, and telephony; and challenges facing vulnerable sections of India's population-child labourers, the elderly, and the disabled.

An alternative strategy of applying the democratic principle of caste-based reservation is also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'Economic growth' has all along been used to measure the progress of nations. But it does not reveal the wellbeing of different sections of the population in different regions of a country. Hence, 'economic development' implying 'economic growth' accompanied by structural changes in the economy has been used to measure the economic advancements of nations. Although this concept enabled to overcome the problems posed by the use of the term economic growth, it cannot reveal quality of human beings in terms of health, education and living standards. Recognizing this, the UNDP has computed Human Development Index incorporating progress of nations in health education and income levels in its Human Development Report first published in 1990. Taking the spirit of the UNDP, several individual countries have also been publishing information on the progress of different states within the country in Human Development. But in a country of continental size like India, there are wide disparities in Human development even within each state. The present study provides evidences of these disparities based on the micro-level study in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh in India.
