Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hugh Memoirs of a Brother Moreover, his family affection was very strong; when he became a Catholic, we all of us felt, including himself, that there might be a certain separation, not of affection, but of occupations and interests; and he himself took very great care to avoid this, with the happy result that we saw him, I truly believe, more often and more intimately than even before. Indeed, my own close companionship with him really began when he came first as a Roman Catholic to Cambridge. Book excerpt: Hugh Memoirs of a Brother by Arthur Christopher Benson How loudly and boisterously the wind roared to-day across the low-hung, cloud-smeared sky, driving the broken rack before it, warm and wet out of the south! What a wintry landscape! leafless trees bending beneath the onset of the wind, bare and streaming hedges, pale close-reaped wheat-fields, brown ploughland, spare pastures stretching away to left and right, softly rising and falling to the horizon; nothing visible but distant belts of trees and coverts, with here and there the tower of a hidden church overtopping them, and a windmill or two; on the left, long lines of willows marking the course of a stream. The road soaked with rain, the grasses heavy with it, hardly a human being to be seen. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Download or read book Memoir of a Brother Classic Reprint written by Thomas Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of a Brother The real fact is, that nations, and the families of which rations are composed, make no parade or fuss over that part of their affairs which is going right. National life depends on home life, and foreign critics are inclined to take the chronicles of our Divorce Court as a test by which to judge the standard of our home life, like the old gentleman who always spelt through the police reports to see what the people were about. An acquaintance, however, with any average English neighbourhood, or any dozen English families taken at random, ought to be sufficient to reassure the faint-hearted, and to satisfy them that (to use the good old formula) the Lord has much work yet for this nation to do, and the nation manliness and godliness enough left to do it all, notwithstanding superficial appearances. Book The Memoirs of Captain Hugh Crow

Download or read book The Memoirs of Captain Hugh Crow written by Hugh Crow and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Crow was the captain of a slave-trading vessel which made one of the last legal journeys across the Atlantic with its 'human cargo'. This is a highly engaging, rare, first-hand account written by a staunch defender of the slave trade. Crow depicts himself as an enlightened practitioner of the trade, paying close attention to the welfare of his 'negroes', which he equates with financial success in his business.Crow's memoirs bring to life the everyday aspects of the slave trade and describe the harsh practicalities of life at sea, where on average a fifth of the crew did not survive the crossing. The narrative is peppered with social comment on the propriety of the slave trade and conditions in West Africa and the Caribbean. At the same time, Crow expresses a warm attachment towards individual slaves which was sometimes reciprocated, most remarkably in a song composed by the slaves about him which is reproduced in this book. The introduction chronicles Hugh Crow's life, his entry into the slave trade and his rise as one of the foremost slave captains of his day. Quoting extensively from original sources, it sets him in the context of the eighteenth-century mercantile community which fought hard to defend itself against the humanitarian campaign to abolish the slave trade. He emerges as a colourful if flawed figure from this highly practical, personal, and eye-opening look at the slave trade.

Book Memoirs and Journal of Hugh Judge

Download or read book Memoirs and Journal of Hugh Judge written by Hugh Judge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs and Journal of Hugh Judge: A Member of the Society of Friends and Minister of the Gospel, Containing an Account of His Life, Religious Observations, and Travels in the Work of the Ministry The parents of Hugh Judge emigrated from Ireland, and settled in Philadelphia. They were of the Roman catholic profession of religion, and were said to be very strict in their adherence to the customs and ceremonies of that church. They had two sons, of which Hugh was the younger; and they were both baptized in their infancy. After the death of his father, Hugh was placed out apprentice by his mother, Margaret Judge. His elder brother was said to be an uncommonly promising youth; but he died at about the age of eighteen years. His death made a deep impression on Hugh's mind, and he felt his situation as being almost alone in the world, having no relative in this country but his widowed mother. It is probable that this was the season of Divine visitation to his soul, alluded to in the following brief narrative of his early life. It is said Hugh Judge had no personal acquaintance with Friends in his youth, perhaps during his apprenticeship: but as he grew towards manhood, observing them to be a plain, honest people, he was induced to go to their meetings. This he did for some time, without the knowledge or consent of his mother, who was exceedingly opposed to his religious scruples, and leaving the catholic church. Book excerpt: "Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door" is an enchanting jaunt through the Golden Era of Broadway and the MGM musicals. This firsthand account captures the energy and excitement of those special times, with eyewitness tales of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and dozens more. Hugh recounts the origins of some of America's most beloved songs, including the perennial favorite, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Martin also reveals some secrets that only he could know: the truth about his composition partner Ralph Blane, his addiction to the infamous Dr. Feelgood, Max Jacobson; how he was instrumental in turning Gene Kelly from a performer to a choreographer during the staging of Best Foot Forward; and what it was really like to be part of the MGM musical production machine. As Hugh enters his 96th year, this could be America's last chance to hear these stories from a living source. They are full of his signature charm, grace, musicality, and poeticism.
