Book Hugh Gwyeth A Roundhead Cavalier

Download or read book Hugh Gwyeth A Roundhead Cavalier written by Beulah Marie Dix and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Gwyeth presents the exciting story of an adventurous teenager during the Cromwellian period. In the title, the young boy, Hugh Gwyeth, is addressed as a roundhead and a cavalier because he remains conflicted about who he should extend his support to during the Civil War. The roundheads supported Cromwell and chose the Parliament of England, seeking a constitutional monarchy. They fought against the Cavaliers, who were royalists supporting King Charles I and sought absolute monarchy. The answer to who he finally chooses unfolds later in the novel. American author Beulah Marie Dix relied mainly on historically popular military events when writing. It's a subject she chose in Hugh Gwyeth as well. Her incredible writing style, vivid descriptions of the events, and powerful characterization made this work an instant hit.

Up in the tops of the tall elms that overshadowed the east wing of Everscombe manor house the ancient rooks were gravely wrangling. A faint morning breeze swept the green branches and, as the leaves stirred, the warm September sunlight smiting through fell in flakes of yellow on the dark flagstones of the terrace below. For a moment Hugh Gwyeth ceased to toss up and catch the ball in his hand, while he stood to count the yellow spots that shifted on the walk. Eight, nine, -but other thoughts so filled his head that there he lost count and once more took up his listless tramp. Off to his left, where beyond the elms the lawn sloped down to the park, he could hear the calls of the boys at play, -his Oldesworth cousins and Aunt Rachel Millington's sons. The Millingtons had come to Everscombe a week before out of Worcestershire, where the king's men were up in arms and had plundered their house. Yet the young Millingtons were playing at ball with the Oldesworth lads as if it were only a holiday. "Children!" Hugh muttered contemptuously and, conscious of his own newly completed sixteen years, threw an increased dignity into his step. He was a wiry lad, of a slender, youthful figure, but for all that he carried himself well and with little awkwardness. Neither was he ill-looking; though there was a reddish tinge to his close-cut hair it changed to gold when he came into the sunlight, and at all times there was in his blue eyes a steady, frank look that made those who liked him forget the freckles across the bridge of his nose and cheek bones, and the almost aggressive squareness of his chin.

Book Creating Memory

Download or read book Creating Memory written by Farah Mendlesohn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the English Civil Wars and the civil wars in Scotland and Ireland through the lens of historical fiction—primarily fiction for the young. The text argues that the English Civil War lies at the heart of English and Irish political identities and considers how these identities have been shaped over the past three centuries in part by the children’s literature that has influenced the popular memory of the English Civil War. Examining nearly two hundred works of historical fiction, Farah Mendlesohn reveals the delicate interplay between fiction and history.
