Book excerpt: "Michael Levin's photographs have gained international attention. The American fine art magazine Focus declared that "Michael Levin's captivating images are soulful and evocative; he is truly one of the rising stars in the world of photography". He has won numerous prestigious awards including 'Photographer of the Year' at the 2006/07 International Photography Awards in New York and 'Fine Art Photographer of the Year' at the 2007 Prix de la Photographie in Paris." "Using long exposures, Levin pulls his world taut, so that what remains in the landscape feels essential and revealed. There is a deceptive simplicity in his images as if these places need only to be found to be realised. Places that are simple and totemic. It is Levin's pure sensibility which arranges this view, which finds these small moments and gives them weight and value and timelessness. He is particularly adept at capturing the smooth skin of light, the way it rolls over a place in the course of minutes rendering his subjects with their own private beauty. Levin illuminates these common places with new intent, making images which are both transfixing and transformative."--BOOK JACKET.

Book International Photography

Download or read book International Photography written by Andrew H. Eskind and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 3-vol. work constitutes a vastly enlarged and expanded new edition of the Index to American Photographic Collections, 3rd enlarged edition, differing from the previous editions in two important respects. First is the inclusion of holdings from outside the United States, a natural evolution in our shrinking world. The second is the inclusion of exhibition histories, cross-referenced by photographer and sponsoring institution, providing a useful new context for evaluating less well-known photographers.

Book Good Pictures

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kim Beil
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2020-06-23
  • ISBN : 1503612325
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Good Pictures written by Kim Beil and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A picture-rich field guide to American photography, from daguerreotype to digital. We are all photographers now, with camera phones in hand and social media accounts at the ready. And we know which pictures we like. But what makes a "good picture"? And how could anyone think those old styles were actually good? Soft-focus yearbook photos from the '80s are now hopelessly—and happily—outdated, as are the low-angle portraits fashionable in the 1940s or the blank stares of the 1840s. From portraits to products, landscapes to food pics, Good Pictures proves that the history of photography is a history of changing styles. In a series of short, engaging essays, Kim Beil uncovers the origins of fifty photographic trends and investigates their original appeal, their decline, and sometimes their reuse by later generations of photographers. Drawing on a wealth of visual material, from vintage how-to manuals to magazine articles for working photographers, this full-color book illustrates the evolution of trends with hundreds of pictures made by amateurs, artists, and commercial photographers alike. Whether for selfies or sepia tones, the rules for good pictures are always shifting, reflecting new ways of thinking about ourselves and our place in the visual world.

Book excerpt: On March 13, 2020 when the global coronavirus pandemic brought life as we know it to an abrupt halt, the International Center of Photography, just weeks after opening in a brand-new building on Manhattan'ss Lower East Side that was buzzing with visitors, was forced to close its doors. Wanting to do more than virtual exhibition tours, ICP announced the #ICPConcerned open call on March 20th, an invitation for people to make, upload, and tag images on Instagram of whatever was going on in their lives wherever they were. What resulted was more than sixty thousand submissions from countries as far flung as France, Singapore, Argentina, Nigeria, Canada, and Iran. From the halls of medical facilities to eerily empty streets and domestic settings converted into home offices and classrooms, the more than 800 photographs collected here are organized chronologically and accompanied by headlines gathered from various global news entities. Taken together, these words and pictures represent the pain, heartbreak, hope, and occasional humor we've all experienced this past year against the backdrop of COVID-19, unrelenting racial injustice, and a divisive political climate. Exhibition: ICP International Center for Photography, New York, USA (01.10.2020 - 03.01.2021).

Book Personal Ties Bed Stuy Brooklyn

Download or read book Personal Ties Bed Stuy Brooklyn written by and published by Schilt Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Photographing strangers on the street is like having an epic novel read aloud to you, only it's real. You're connected. You're involved. And you carry every piece of it with you from then on."--Amy Touchette A resident of New York City since 1997, Amy Touchette started photographing people in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, soon after moving to the neighborhood in 2015. Perhaps best known for being the childhood home of rapper Jay-Z and the setting of Spike Lee's film Do the Right Thing, what struck Touchette most about Bed-Stuy was its strong sense of community and the relationships that underpin it. Using a Rolleiflex film camera, friends, family members, and couples often caught her eye. Knowing she was a stranger appealing for their time, Touchette tried to make the encounters as quick and easy as possible, making just two frames of each subject. Whether photographing in Hawaii, Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the American South, or in her own adopted neighborhood in Bed-Stuy, Touchette has always used photography to shine the light on others, a strong believer that eye contact is the gateway to empathy and the realization that we are all in this together. Although all of her projects stem from a personal endearment, these photographs, set in the streets she calls home, are especially personal.
