Book excerpt: Helicopter pilots in Vietnam kidded one another about being nothing but glorified bus drivers. But these “rotor heads” saved thousands of American lives while performing what the Army classified as the most dangerous job it had to offer. One in eighteen did not return home. Tom A. Johnson flew the UH-1 “Iroquois” — better known as the “Huey” — in the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion of the First Air Cavalry Division. From June 1967 through June 1968, he accumulated an astonishing 1,600 flying hours (1,150 combat and 450 noncombat). His battalion was one of the most highly decorated units in the Vietnam War and, as part of the famous First Air Cavalry Division, helped redefine modern warfare. With tremendous flying skill, Johnson survived rescue missions and key battles that included those for Hue and Khe Sanh and operations in the A Shau and Song Re valleys, while many of his comrades did not. His heartfelt and riveting memoir will strike a chord with any soldier who ever flew in the ubiquitous Huey and any reader with an interest in how the Vietnam War was really fought.

Book Tiger Force

Download or read book Tiger Force written by Michael Sallah and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2006-05-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of the Vietnam War, the Army created an experimental fighting unit that became known as "Tiger Force." The Tigers were to be made up of the cream of the crop-the very best and bravest soldiers the American military could offer. They would be given a long leash, allowed to operate in the field with less supervision. Their mission was to seek out enemy compounds and hiding places so that bombing runs could be accurately targeted. They were to go where no troops had gone, to become one with the jungle, to leave themselves behind and get deep inside the enemy's mind. The experiment went terribly wrong. What happened during the seven months Tiger Force descended into the abyss is the stuff of nightmares. Their crimes were uncountable, their madness beyond imagination-so much so that for almost four decades, the story of Tiger Force was covered up under orders that stretched all the way to the White House. Records were scrubbed, documents were destroyed, men were told to say nothing. But one person didn't follow orders. The product of years of investigative reporting, interviews around the world, and the discovery of an astonishing array of classified information, Tiger Force is a masterpiece of journalism. Winners of the Pulitzer Prize for their Tiger Force reporting, Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss have uncovered the last great secret of the Vietnam War.

Book excerpt: Originally, this was just a journal to document a tiger experience. Capt. Ian Sonnenberg invited his dad, John Sonnenberg, and his uncle, Craig Cooper, to join him in Honolulu aboard the USS San Diego (LPD-22) and sail to Camp Pendleton, California, on a tiger cruise. There was some brief preliminary information and a couple of emails, but there was little information on what to expect from the experience. The plan was to capture the experience so others would feel more prepared. But this project turned into something more. The journal then shifted to creating a guidebook for anyone going on an extended tiger cruise as well as composing a journal. As the journal developed into a manual for tiger cruises, it took on another dimension. This document grew to be an optimistic accounting of the future of America. This team of Sailors and Marines crossed the globe, with our flag proudly flying from the mast, and showed the world the strength and spirit of the United States. Theyall the US militaryindeed, are celebrated in the successful culmination of their missions. In addition to this optimistic message came the realization that the future leaders of our industries, institutions, and government are being developed within these brave men and women. Hoorah!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover of darkness was pulled back by the NODS scopes in their hands. The enemy had no idea what was about to befall them. With the rush of wings of dragons, the sounds of M-14s, M-870 shotguns, M-16's and grenades spoke the finality of death. This gave the human pack mules a taste of what would continue to reign upon them in the House of the Dragon. North and South Vietnam were at war. Indeed, all of Southeast Asia was at war. Due to national commitments, the U.S. military was drawn into the fray. Members of the elite Navy SEALS performed operations from counter-narcotics, counter-human trafficking and even counter piracy. These men placed their lives on the line daily as true humanitarians. Seen through the eyes of attached Naval Intelligence operatives, their stories can now be revealed. These operations, specific missions, even their love stories, are recounted in Into the Fire.

Book excerpt: Ithaca is Stephen Pearsall’s third novel in the Norquist trilogy and portrays with insight and sensitivity Kyle Norquist’s journey from childhood to his election as a US Senator. It is the story of war and adventure, intense relationships and perfect love, greed, malice and murder. The beginning of handgun proliferation in the United States and the world’s appetite for weapons becomes a center-focus for two Senators who met on the Stanford University campus. One became the principal proponent of handgun regulation, and the other exposed a conspiracy to illegally ship weapons to nefarious foreign clients. The story argues that we can never entirely fathom another person’s deepest thoughts, not our family’s nor our friends’ and that a father and son’s relationship may be the most challenging. The conclusion gathers characters from the three novels and examines their philosophies and reveals their surprising judgements on their own life and that of their family.

The interested reader will find useful information and a few technical details on most of the military aircraft that have been in service with active Canadian squadrons both at home and overseas. 100 selected photographs have been included to illustrate a few of the major examples in addition to the serial numbers assigned to Canadian service aircraft. For those who like to actually see the aircraft concerned, aviation museum locations, addresses and contact phone numbers have been included, along with a list of aircraft held in each museum's current inventory or on display as gate guardians throughout Canada and overseas. The aircraft presented in this edition are listed alphabetically by manufacturer, number and type. Book UH 1 Huey Gunship vs NVA VC Forces

Download or read book UH 1 Huey Gunship vs NVA VC Forces written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often described as the US Army's aerial jeep the UH-1 Iroquois ('Huey') was the general-purpose vehicle that provided mobility in a hostile jungle environment which made rapid troop movement extremely challenging by any other means. Hueys airlifted troops, evacuated casualties, rescued downed pilots, transported cargo externally and enabled rapid transit of commanders in the field. Although 'vertical aviation' had only become a practical reality during the Korean War helicopters evolved rapidly in the decade before Vietnam and by 1965 the US Army and US Marines relied on them as primary combat tools. This was principally because North Vietnam's armed forces had long experience of jungle operations, camouflage and evasion. Generally avoiding set-piece pitched battles they relied on rapid, frequent strikes and withdrew using routes that were generally inaccessible to US vehicles. They commonly relied on darkness and bad weather to make their moves, often rendering them immune to conventional air attack. Gunship helicopters, sometimes equipped with Firefly searchlights and early night vision light intensifiers, were more able to track and attack the enemy. Innovative tactics were required for this unfamiliar combat scenario and for a US Army that was more prepared for conventional operations in a European-type setting. One of the most valuable new initiatives was the UH-1C 'Huey Hog' or 'Frog' gunship, conceived in 1960 and offering more power and agility than the UH-1B that pioneered gunship use in combat. Heavily armed with guns and rockets and easily transportable by air these helicopters became available in large numbers and they became a major problem for the insurgent forces throughout the war. Covering fascinating details of the innovations in tactics and combat introduced by gunship helicopters, this book offers an analysis of their adaptability and usefulness in a variety of operations, while exploring the insurgent forces' responses to the advent of 'vertical aviation'.
