Book excerpt: "You’d think a Miss America swimsuit winner would feel completely confident about her body, right? Not always! So I decided to write the book I wish I’d had as a teen and in college—an honest, funny, practical, medically accurate, totally reassuring guide to how women’s bodies actually look, smell, feel, behave, and change. Alongside real-deal photographs of women just like you and me (no airbrushing, no supermodels, no kidding) you’ll find medical pictures of things you need to be able to recognize, true confessions by yours truly, and the encouragement you need to appreciate the uniqueness, strength, and beauty of your body. What are you waiting for?"—Nancy Redd From fashion magazines to taboo Web sites, curious young women have access to tons of old wives' tales about and thousands of airbrushed and inaccurate images of the female body—misinformation and harmful portrayals that can lead to low self-esteem, self-destructive acts, or even disturbing plastic surgery procedures. Teaming up with a leading physician specializing in adolescent health issues, Harvard graduate and former Miss Virginia Nancy Redd now offers a down-to-earth, healing, and reassuring response to those damaging myths. In Body Drama, Redd gives girls insight into the issues they're often too ashamed to raise with a doctor or parent. She also reveals her own experiences with the culture of "American beauty," and shows readers all the many versions of "normal." From body hair and bras, to acne and weight issues, along with crucial issues such as the importance of a healthy self image, Body Drama is a groundbreaking book packed with informative fast facts, FYIs, how-tos, and moving personal anecdotes as well as hundreds of un-retouched photographs. A highly visual book, it’s the first of its kind for women: filled with real information and real photographs of real bodies, to celebrate all our different shapes and sizes. Named by Glamour magazine as one of America’s top-ten college women "most likely to succeed—at anything," Redd has spent the most recent years of her life on a mission to tackle the issues least discussed but most significant in young women’s lives. Celebrating the many versions of "normal," and replacing seriously erroneous information with the honest, medically proven truth in a language all girls can understand, Body Drama dares to empower a new generation—with facts instead of fantasies, and the priceless gift of self-knowledge.

Book excerpt: Anytown, England. Jeremy Shepherd has reached post-ambition, giving up the trappings of his London life (flash job, flash cars, even flashier girlfriends) to move back to his home town and his parents' house. By day, he is a low-level civil servant, chained to his desk and content to idle away the hours filing and answering emails. There isn't a lot to do in a small town, but the English are very resourceful and Jeremy quickly finds a hobby that delivers lots of fresh air and exercise. By night, he prowls local car parks to indulge in altogether more challenging pursuits - anonymous sex with strangers. This is no ordinary hobby - each encounter is tinged with a definite air of danger, as police stake out each site and the cloak of anonymity brings its own risks. As the scene's night-time liaisons increasingly threaten the sensibilities of the local Daily Mail readers, things take a turn for the worse. Locals take a dislike to the illicit rendezvous and as the police step up surveillance, private pursuits risk becoming very public.

Book Spillane King of Pulp Fiction

Download or read book Spillane King of Pulp Fiction written by Max Allan Collins and published by Penzler Publishers. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Edgar and Macavity Award Nominee The first-ever biography of the most popular and most influential pulp writer of all time, written by the collaborator who knew him best There has never been a full-length biography of Mickey Spillane, the most popular and influential mystery writer of his era—until now. Beginning in 1947 with I, the Jury, and continuing with his next six novels, Spillane quickly amassed a readership in the tens of millions, becoming the bestselling novelist in the history of American publishing. Surrounded by controversy for the overt violence and suggestive sexual content of his iconic Mike Hammer private eye novels, Spillane was loathed by critics but beloved by his readers. There is, however, more to Spillane’s life than the books. He also starred as Hammer in a movie, was a circus performer, worked with the FBI in capturing a notorious criminal, and starred in Miller Light beer commercials that were so popular they ran for a quarter of a century. Max Allan Collins became Spillane’s friend and collaborator, continuing the Mike Hammer series for years after the author's death, building upon unfinished manuscripts the writer left behind. Now, with co-author James Traylor, Collins has produced the first comprehensive and authoritative profile of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master. It is a must-read for any fan of the author—or of the generations of crime writers that were influenced by his work.

Book The Wrong Dog Dream

Download or read book The Wrong Dog Dream written by Jane Vandenburgh and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author calls this "a true romance," saying, it's the part of her personal history she, being superstitious, was almost afraid to write. She'd grown up accustomed to bad luck, but had – by accident or miracle – survived her own circumstances: being orphaned, her own misspent youth, the chaos of a broken marriage. She'd more than survived, she'd even triumphed and had awakened into a kind of charmed splendor to find herself living in a white marble city with storybook castles, knowing famous people, being invited to the White House to listen to her husband discuss Yeats with the President of the United States, as Bill Clinton drinks Diet Coke from the can. And into this fabled chapter of the writer's life comes the perfect dog, an English Springer Spaniel named Whistler who arrives not only the family pet, but as her private symbol of triumph over all that age–old sadness. She wants to ignore it but can't help but see that their perfect pup is something of a neurotic mess, snarling at manhole covers, barking at children, growling at people in wheelchairs. The writer herself is not seemingly done with the anxieties born of all that early trauma and loss, and she begins to worry obsessively about losing this difficult dog, the one they so love. Wrrrrnnnggdgggg! she begins to dream. Wrrrrrnnnnng dgggg!

Potcakes provides the first systematic study of dog ownership in a Caribbean society by investigating the Bahamian perceptions of "pet" and "responsible pet ownership" in the context of both dog overpopulation concerns and how "image" dogs like Rottweilers and Pit Bulls have interacted with and altered the Potcake population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warning: If youve ever owned a dog, you should enjoy the following book. This book contains 321 cartoons which hopefully will make you smile, chuckle, and perhaps wet yourself (assuming you are older like me!) In my first book Did You Ever Wonder Thinking Outside My Box, my cartoons and their topics were fairly random sort of like stream of conscientiousness writing. This book starts out in a somewhat similar fashion but does eventually develop a couple of story lines. In the early part, youll be introduced to a number of characters but the bulk of the book will focus on Spike, Chico, and Grandpaw. Initially I considered splitting this material into two separate books but didnt think there was enough meat for both books to stand or squat separately. The last thing I wanted to do with a dog story is not have enough meat in it. If I didnt, Id have all the doggie lovers out there howling for my blood not to mention begging for more treats! Regardless, these cartoons were written with the intent of brightening your day! So take off you game face, relax, and let the sunlight enter! JAN PS Dogs like young children enjoy having stories read to them too! Please dont make them beg!

Book Turning for Home

Download or read book Turning for Home written by Mike Gaddis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a juncture in every journey when your heart must find soon again something long, dear, and gently known. There is a waver in the wildest of wanderlust when the soul runs dry and must come again to the thing, the place, or the somebody that can make it replete. There is to every life an awakening that the miles ahead are greatly less than the ones behind, that beyond all things lies an end—that you must come again as closely as you can to where you begin. Turning for “home” . . . It is not always back to where you departed. It is not always from the place you have been. It is as much of the mind as of the matter—as much a coming, oftentimes, as a going. Sometimes the voyage is easy; sometimes the passage is steep. When we follow the ache of our souls, we discover that our emotions have been buried in many places, and that easily the most painful of these are those to which we can never return at all. Here, in a new and eclectic compilation of masterful stories and essays, one of the most revered sporting authors of our time contemplates the homecomings of the sportsman’s heart. He unearths a treasury of broadly divergent encounters, from the delightfully absurd hilarity of “Love Gloves,” to the piercingly intense melancholy of “A Prayer from Dark Timber.” Each is told with an insight and dexterity that rarely gains expression, and each is drawn from the timeless and beloved pathways of the sporting life that wander between a laugh and a tear. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for hunters and firearms enthusiasts. We publish books about shotguns, rifles, handguns, target shooting, gun collecting, self-defense, archery, ammunition, knives, gunsmithing, gun repair, and wilderness survival. We publish books on deer hunting, big game hunting, small game hunting, wing shooting, turkey hunting, deer stands, duck blinds, bowhunting, wing shooting, hunting dogs, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
