Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amir Sjarifoeddin explores the experiences of a central figure in the Indonesian revolution, whose life mirrored the idealism and contradictions of the anti-colonial and post-war world of twentieth century Indonesia. Amir was born at the edge of an empire in a time of change. Imprisoned by the Dutch for anti-colonialism, he was sentenced to death by the Japanese for anti-fascism. He survived to become the prime minister of the new Indonesian republic. Disappointed by the direction the Indonesian elites were taking, Amir turned increasingly to the left. In 1948 he joined the armed uprising against both the Indonesian government and the corruption of the national revolution, and was captured and executed as a traitor. In Amir Sjarifoeddin, Rudolf Mrázek unveils the human dimensions of a figure who is widely mythologized but often poorly understood. Through Sjarifoeddin's life, it is possible to study the moral ambiguity and complexities of the political revolutions of the twentieth century.

Book Australia And South Asia The Crystallisation Of A Relationship

Download or read book Australia And South Asia The Crystallisation Of A Relationship written by Ravindra Varma and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southeast Asia has become a battleground of power-politics today where even the so-called “Middle Powers” have their vital stakes. Australia’s participation in the Southeast Asian drama has naturally aroused the interest of commentators and policy-makers in Asia and abroad. Australia is Asia’s nearest “white” neighbour and 70% of its diplomatic activity is concerned with Asian affairs. Dr. Ravindra Varma’s analysis of Australia’s involvement in Southeast Asia since the Second World War forms the first full-length study by an Asian writer of Australia’s Asian policies. The book has grown out of the author’s research in India, Australia and a number of Southeast Asian countries, such as, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, South Vietnam, The Philippines and Indonesia. His discussions with officials, politicians, diplomats and statesmen of various nations in the area have helped the book to achieve a perspective which is intimate and detached at the same time. The book is indispensable to students of international politics in general and specialists on South and Southeast Asia in particular.

Book Intellectuals and Nationalism in Indonesia

Download or read book Intellectuals and Nationalism in Indonesia written by J. D. Legge and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has always been a matter of national pride that independence came to Indonesia not as the result of a negotiated transfer of sovereignty, though the process was completed in that way, but through a struggle of heroic proportions in whose fires the nation itself was forged. The revolution, indeed, is central to the Republic's perception of itself. To call it a revolution is, of course, to beg a number of important questions. What is a revolution? Is the concept, developed in modern thought on the models of the French and Russian revolutions, applicable to a nationalist struggle for independence? Or must a revolution involve also a transfer of power from one social class to another and a subsequent social transformation? For Indonesians looking back to the birth of the nation, however, such questions do not arise. For them there is no question but that the events of 1945-49 constituted a revolution, a revolution that is seen as the supreme act of national will, the symbol of national self-reliance and, for those caught up in it, as a vast emotional experience in which the people -- the people as a whole -- participated directly. The exploration of Sjahrir's recruitment of a group of followers during the Japanese Occupation and of the character and attitudes of the group is based, in large measure, on interviews with its surviving members. A highly articulate body of people, they clearly enjoyed recalling their youth, remembering particular experiences, and thinking back on the issues that had preoccupied them and the ideas that had excited them as students. For many of them it had obviously been a golden age, perceived all the more vividly now because the world they had hoped for had never come into being. There is, perhaps, a good deal of nostalgia in their memories of what it was like to be a part of a crucial period in their country's history and no doubt some misjudgment about the parts they played. Oral history is a risky business, given the fallibility of human memory and the tendency for interviewer and subject alike to collaborate in re-shaping the past in the light of their later perspectives. The dangers of such a method are discussed below. Nevertheless, provided it is kept in mind that memories are documents of the present and not of the period with which they deal, it is important to gather these recollections while members of the generation in question are still alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A million Australians went to Bali last year, following the millions of others who have made their way across Asia over the past century. Many travellers returned thinking they knew Asia and their personal experiences helped shape popular attitudes. This absorbing book unpacks their experiences, showing how their encounters changed the way Australians thought about themselves in the world.Visiting the Neighbours tells the story of Australian relations with Asia from the bottom up, examining the experiences of some of the millions of travellers and tourists who headed to the region over more than a hundred years. Merchants, missionaries, pilgrims, soldiers, hippies, diplomats, backpackers all had an impact on diplomacy and international relations. Agnieszka Sobocinska’s book is a bold and important step in understanding the intersection between popular opinion, prejudice and international relations as Australia stands at the precipice of the Asian Century.‘Sets out a range of fascinating and different roles played by Australians in Asia.’ – Michael Wesley, author of There Goes the Neighbourhood: Australia and the rise of Asia.‘ … Puts travel to Asia firmly on the 'Asia-literacy' map. This is not only a richly detailed, subtly argued and historically informed study of the Australian traveller in Asia. It is also smart, sharp and a very good read.’ – David Walker, BHP Billiton Chair of Australian Studies, Peking University.
