It highlights empirical research and establishes a solid foundation for future research by presenting methods of supporting credibility evaluation of online content, together with publicly available datasets for reproducible experimentation, such as the Web Content Credibility Corpus. The book is divided into six chapters. After a general introduction in Chapter 1, including a brief survey of credibility evaluation in the social sciences, Chapter 2 presents definitions of credibility and related concepts of truth and trust. Next, Chapter 3 details methods, algorithms and user interfaces for systems supporting Web content credibility evaluation. In turn, Chapter 4 takes a closer look at the credibility of social media, exemplified in sections on Twitter, Q&A systems, and Wikipedia, as well as fake news detection. In closing, Chapter 5 presents mathematical and simulation models of credibility evaluation, before a final round-up of the book is provided in Chapter 6. Overall, the book reviews and synthesizes the current state of the art in Web content credibility evaluation support and fake news detection. It provides researchers in academia and industry with both an incentive and a basis for future research and development of Web content credibility evaluation support services.

In the last decade, there have been intensive research activities focusing on social media during and after disasters. This approach, which views people’s communication on social media as a sensor for real-time situations, has been widely adopted as the “people as sensor” approach. Furthermore, to improve recovery efforts after large-scale disasters, detecting communities’ real-time recovery situations is essential, since conventional socio-economic recovery indicators, such as governmental statistics, are not published in real time. Thanks to its timeliness, using social media data can fill the gap. Motivated by this possibility, this book especially focuses on the relationships between people’s communication on Twitter and Facebook pages, and socio-economic recovery activities as reflected in the used-car market data and the housing market data in the case of two major disasters: the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The book pursues an interdisciplinary approach, combining e.g. disaster recovery studies, crisis informatics, and economics. In terms of its contributions, firstly, the book sheds light on the “people as sensors” approach for detecting socio-economic recovery activities, which has not been thoroughly studied to date but has the potential to improve situation awareness during the recovery phase. Secondly, the book proposes new socio-economic recovery indicators: used-car market data and housing market data. Thirdly, in the context of using social media during the recovery phase, the results demonstrate the importance of distinguishing between social media data posted both by people who are at or near disaster-stricken areas and by those who are farther away.

Early hypertext writing relied on standalone, mainframe computers and specialized authoring software. With the Web launching as a mass distribution platform, EQRH faced a fast-evolving technological landscape, paired with an emergent gift and open access economy. Its non-linear writing experiments afford key insights into historical, medium-specific authoring practices. Access constraints have left EQRH under-researched and threatened by obsolescence. To address this challenge, this study offers platform-specific analyses of all the EQRH's cross-media materials, including works that have hitherto escaped scholarly attention. It deploys a form of conceptually oral ethno-historiography: the lore of electronic literature. The Element deepens our understanding of the North American publishing industry's history and contributes to the overdue preservation of early digital writing.

HT is a top-tier ACM conference in the areas of Hypertext and Social Media. Since 1987, it has successfully brought together leading researchers and developers from the community. It is concerned with all aspects of modern hypertext research, including social media, adaptation, personalization, recommendations, user modeling, linked data and semantic web, dynamic and computed hypertext, and its application in digital humanities, as well as the interplay between those aspects such as linking stories with data or linking people with resources. HT 2018 continues to create an outstanding technical program consisting of research and demo paper presentations. The single-track conference brings together researchers working in topics including Algorithms and Methods for Social Media Analysis, Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science, Adaptive Hypertext and Recommendations, Semantic Web and Connected Data, Digital Storytelling and News, and Collaboration and Crowdsourcing. In total, we have received 69 regular paper (10 pages) submissions reviewed by a group of 66 regular and 33 senior program committee members, who led the discussions. In the end, 19 regular papers (acceptance rate of 27%) were accepted with another 10 full papers accepted as short papers. Additionally, 3 of 16 short paper submissions were accepted. This year, for the first time, we also organized a Blue Sky Ideas track with the support of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC). This track received 5 submissions of which 3 were accepted and received partial travel support from CCC. To help provide a broad perspective on current trends at the intersection of data science and society, the conference will host the following four, diverse keynote speakers: Leslie Sage, the Director of Data Science at DevResults; Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, the author of the NYT bestseller Everybody Lies; Elizabeth Kittrie, a Strategic Advisor for Data and Open Science at the National Library of Medicine (NLM); and Ben Zhao, the Neubauer Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. In addition to the scientific presentations and the keynotes, the pre-conference day on July 9 will also feature three focused workshops and a tutorial.
