Book Proverbs and the African Tree of Life

Download or read book Proverbs and the African Tree of Life written by Dorothy BEA Akoto-Abutiate and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Proverbs and the African Tree of Life Dorothy BEA Akoto-Abutiate juxtaposes chosen sayings from Proverbs and selected Ewe Folk proverbs using the agricultural metaphor of “grafting,” which she calls a “hermeneutic of grafting.” Though these two sets of sayings come from completely different cultural contexts, Akoto argues that folk sayings/proverbs, which abound in Africa, should be considered as an already mature, established tree on to which a piece of the biblical tree is spliced or engrafted to produce hybridized fruits that have uniquely different tastes than the fruits of each tree individually. This metaphorical grafting process allows the message of the Bible (in Proverbs) to be understood, imbibed and appropriated in Africa.

Book excerpt: "He spread the cancer," Karen said in disbelief. "He spread the cancer." EVEN DOCTORS CRY tells the story of Dr. Alvin Reiter, his success as a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, his love for his profession and his pride in his work. That work, included being the lead surgeon on the team that reconstructed the shattered face of Rodney King, whose name became a household word after he was beaten by the LAPD. "I always felt like Clark Kent putting on my surgical outfit," Reiter wrote about his transformative role. Then came, however, a time when even Superman could not help. In 1994, Alvin was diagnosed with incurable Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and was given less than a 40% chance of living 6 years, while his wife Karen was diagnosed with early breast cancer in 1999 and given a 95% chance of total cure. The Doctor survived, but Karen did not. She died of metastatic breast cancer in May 2003. Her premature death was aided and abetted by her oncologist, breast and liver surgeons and the gross failure of the medical system in which human error, negligence and hubris can - and did - take a life. The facts are chilling and irrefutable. In the midst of Karen's struggle for her life, Reiter became the target of an unwarranted investigation by the FBI and the US Attorney's office into a billling fraud scandal. Up till the time of her illness he had been living for his surgery, his patients, his wife, their cats and their garden. His paradise was a fool's paradise. He had no idea what evil lurked under the Southern California sun. EVEN DOCTORS CRY tells a riveting story of love, death, scandal and a terribly flawed medical system.

Download or read book Just You Wait written by Tricia Lott Williford and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody waits. We wait for a spouse, wait for a baby, wait on our children, wait for our parents. We wait for clarity and direction. We wait on a job, a promotion, a new direction. We wait for hope, for healing, and for miracles. We wait on God. And when we misunderstand what waiting is about, we can get confused about what God is up to. Waiting is one of God’s favorite tools. He can do certain things in our hearts, our lives, and our relationships while we wait—things we cannot experience once we’ve opened the gift we have been waiting for. So just you wait, because everyone takes their turn in the waiting room. It’s a long and painful fact of life, but shortcuts and microwaves aren’t the answer. God is at work behind the scenes in invisible ways you can’t see . . . yet. Just you wait and see how ready you’ll be if you spend your waiting well. Because when your opportunity comes, you don’t want to spend more time on the bench. When you wait well, you can say, “Look out, world: I am getting ready to shine. Just you wait.” In these pages, Tricia discusses the joy hidden in the discipline of waiting, and the practices of believing God is for you and working on your behalf, even when the work of His hand is hard to find.

In 533 A.D., the last Vandal ruler in North Africa consults an oracle on how to defeat the invading Byzantine army. The oracle tells the king that a high priestess cast a curse upon the Vandal Kingdom after a sacred scroll was stolen. In order to lift the curse, the scroll must be returned to its rightful home. But the kingdom falls before the scroll is found, leaving its location a great mystery...until a current day archeological dig, funded by Sam and Remi Fargo, uncovers some vital clues. The search for the ancient scroll is put on hold when the Fargos learn that a shipment of supplies intended for their charitable foundation's school has been stolen, and they travel to Nigeria to deliver new supplies themselves. But their mission becomes infinitely more complicated when they run afoul of a band of robbers. The group takes Remi and several students hostage, and there are signs that the kidnapping is related to the missing scroll. The Fargos need all their skills to save the lives of the young girls at the school before they uncover the hidden treasure...and lift the deadly curse.
