In my case that place was Irvington, a unique community in Indianapolis. Irvington might be the only community in the U.S. that can boast that it housed a university in its midst before it built its own high school. To that extent, I have written a book about that community centered around three important years: 1875, 1902 and 1946. Shortly after Irvington had been established in 1870, Butler University would relocate to Irvington in 1875, transforming the community to a mecca for education and cultural significance. I describe how this was a gamechanger for the both the community and the school at that time. A second period I discuss tells the story of Butler University around the turn of the twentieth century, and more particular, in 1902, when Irvington would be annexed to the city of Indianapolis.
