Download or read book The Point of Vanishing written by Howard Axelrod and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into the Wild meets Walden—a lyrical memoir for nature lovers and for anyone who has wondered what it would be like to disconnect from our hyper-connected culture and seek more meaningful connections After losing vision in one eye and becoming estranged from his family and friends, a young man spent two years searching for identity in self-imposed solitude in the backwoods of northern Vermont, where he embarked on a project of stripping away facades and all social ties--and learned to face himself. On a clear May afternoon at the end of his junior year at Harvard, Howard Axelrod played a pick-up game of basketball. In a skirmish for a loose ball, a boy’s finger hooked behind Axelrod’s eyeball and left him permanently blinded in his right eye. A week later, he returned to the same dorm room, but to a different world. A world where nothing looked solid, where the distance between how people saw him and how he saw had widened into a gulf. Desperate for a sense of orientation he could trust, he retreated to a jerry-rigged house in the Vermont woods, where he lived without a computer or television, and largely without human contact, for two years. He needed to find a more lasting sense of meaning away from society’s pressures and rush. Named one of the best books of the year by Slate, Chicago Tribune, Entropy Magazine, and named one of the top 10 memoirs by Library Journal

Download or read book The Impulse Society written by Paul Roberts and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's something most of us have sensed for years-the rise of a world defined only by “mine” and “now.” A world where business shamelessly seeks the fastest reward, regardless of the long-term social consequences; where political leaders reflexively choose short-term fixes over broad, sustainable social progress; where individuals feel increasingly exploited by a marketplace obsessed with our private cravings yet oblivious to our spiritual well-being or the larger needs of our families and communities. At the heart of The Impulse Society is an urgent, powerful story: how the pursuit of short-term self-gratification, once scorned as a sign of personal weakness, became the default principle not only for individuals, but for all sectors of our society. Drawing on the latest research in economics, psychology, political philosophy, and business management, Paul Roberts shows how a potent combination of rapidly advancing technologies, corrupted ideologies, and bottom-line business ethics has pushed us across a threshold to an unprecedented state: a virtual merging of the market and the self. The result is a socioeconomic system ruled by impulse, by the reflexive, id-like drive for the largest, quickest, most “efficient” reward, without regard for long-term costs to ourselves or to broader society. More than thirty years ago, Christopher Lasch hinted at this bleak world in his landmark book, The Culture of Narcissism. In The Impulse Society, Roberts shows how that self-destructive pattern has grown so pervasive that anxiety and emptiness are becoming embedded in our national character. Yet it is in this unease that Roberts finds clear signs of change-and broad revolt as millions of Americans try step off the self-defeating treadmill of gratification and restore a sense of balance. Fresh, vital, and free of ideological, right-wing/left-wing formulations, The Impulse Society shows the way back to a world of real and lasting good.

And half a dozen lives will come unravelled. There's Kathryn and Howard, Rob's parents. Kath has been making the best of her second marriage after the love of her life died young. Howard has been clinging onto a family life he hardly expected to have. There's Joanna, the teen queen of nowheresville. She's been looking for a way out, escape from her parents' broken marriage. She thought Rob might take her away from all this, but lately she?s started to think Rob might have other plans. And then there's Shane, with the big hands and the fixation on Joanna. Bethan Roberts' strikingly assured debut novel subtly reveals the tensions and terrors that underpin apparently ordinary lives, and can lead them to spiral suddenly out of control.
Download or read book The Roberts Court written by Marcia Coyle and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice John Roberts has been at the center of a constitutional maelstrom. Here, the much-honored, expert Supreme Court reporter Marcia Coyle's examination of four landmark cases is "informative, insightful, clear and fair...Coyle reminds us that Supreme Court decisions matter. A lot." (Portland Oregonian). Seven minutes after President Obama put his signature to a landmark national health care insurance program, a lawyer in the office of Florida GOP attorney general Bill McCollum hit a computer key, sparking a legal challenge to the new law that would eventually reach the nation’s highest court. Health care is only the most visible and recent front in a battle over the meaning and scope of the US Constitution. The battleground is the United States Supreme Court, and one of the most skilled, insightful, and trenchant of its observers takes us close up to watch it in action. Marcia Coyle’s brilliant inside analysis of the High Court captures four landmark decisions—concerning health care, money in elections, guns at home, and race in schools. Coyle examines how those cases began and how they exposed the great divides among the justices, such as the originalists versus the pragmatists on guns and the Second Amendment, and corporate speech versus human speech in the controversial Citizens United case. Most dramatically, her reporting shows how dedicated conservative lawyers and groups have strategized to find cases and crafted them to bring up the judicial road to the Supreme Court with an eye on a receptive conservative majority. The Roberts Court offers a ringside seat to the struggle to lay down the law of the land.
Download or read book Guitar Compendium Vol 2 written by Howard Roberts and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first instructional book of its kind, taking a strikingly new and refreshing approach to learning guitar, carefully designed to guarantee efficient practice with rewarding results. Whether your playing falls under one of the more traditional styles, or whether you're a composer and arranger or exploring new musical regions and establishing your own musical direction or personal fusion of musical ideas and influences, The Praxis System has what you need. The name of the system ("Praxis" comes from the Greek word meaning "practice" and "to do") accurately reflects its general orientation. Play it first, getting sound and satisfaction out of the guitar immediately, and musical understanding will naturally follow. Praxis lets you choose the precise subject you want and immediately provides relevant musical examples. And these examples are presented in such a way that the principle behind the example is always clear, thus allowing you to apply it directly to your music. Traditional guitar books try to teach you to play someone else's music, while Praxis takes you directly to being able to play anything that you want---someone else's music, your own music, and everything in between. Guitar instruction books are traditionally written in a progressive fashion; Book 1 first, then Book 2, etc. However, the selection and sequencing of material is usually determined by the book rather than the reader, and the familiar result is that---while the book progresses, the student doesn't. Again, Praxis reverses this. You don't have to start with Book 1, there is no Book 1! You go where your interests lie. Just begin work on any one subject in any volume that attracts you. Because Praxis is a modular system, it can be reassembled into many different combinations. These different combinations of units can answer both varying curricular needs as well as individual interests. Titles: Style & Craft: Inventory of the Basic Moves * Inventory of the Basic Mo

Book excerpt: In their world, neither static definitions of intelligence nor traditional ideas of training stand us in good stead. Rather, we need to reframe the question given what lies before us and come to terms with a different answer posited in different language. This, then, are those who will thrive in the 21st Century: -They will blend multiple intelligences in a way that might be described as synthetic or even symphonic -They will be ambitious and focused without being self-obsessed -They will value asynchrony and even seek it out -They will use their own marginality to generate novel perspective and new work -They will exhibit a steadfast resilience in all phases of life -They will be measured by what they produce over the course of a lifetime, not by any static notion of capacity or quotient In the fractured environment of the 21st century, true success will be unique and unexpected--the result of a creative response to complex, shifting challenges. So, how do we prepare? How do we educate ourselves and our children for life in 2050?

Download or read book Gouache for Illustration written by Rob Howard and published by Echo Point Books & Media. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also known as opaque watercolor, gouache is the most brilliant of all painting mediums, possessing the greatest degree of opacity and capable of the finest detail work. Often erroneously thought to be impermanent--and therefore used only for commercial work that is not meant to be saved--gouache in fact provides the artist with as many permanent colors as oil, watercolor, or acrylic. Not only is it the favorite medium of illustrators and graphic artists, but it is also prized by watercolor artists for adding color and special effects to their paintings. Despite this popularity, gouache has received scant attention in art instruction books. Gouache for Illustration, the first book on gouache materials and techniques, provides all the information illustrators and fine artists need to know about this rewarding medium. Among this book's special features are: Comprehensive consumer guide comparing professional paint brands Series of simple tests for evaluating paints and brushes Section on color recipes for rendering various surfaces Gallery of step-by-step demonstrations of illustrations, for which gouache is often the medium of choice In this one-of-a-kind book, Rob Howard demonstrates how fine artists and illustrators can master this dynamic medium. Rob Howard, co-owner of the Studio for Illustration in Boston, has over forty years of experience in all aspects of art and now operates his own portrait studio. He has illustrated eleven books, and he authored The Illustrator's Bible, the top-selling definitive sourcebook of illustration techniques. Over the years, his illustrations toured numerous shows and museums. His advertising client list includes major advertising agencies and dozens of high-profile business corporations.
