Book Coastal Sensitivity to Sea Level Rise

Download or read book Coastal Sensitivity to Sea Level Rise written by Melvin C. Urajner and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global sea-level is rising, and there is evidence that the rate is accelerating. Increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases, primarily from human contributions, are very likely warming the atmosphere and oceans. The warmer temperatures raise sea-level by expanding ocean water, melting glaciers, and possibly increasing the rate at which ice sheets discharge ice and water into the oceans. Rising sea-level and the potential for stronger storms pose an increasing threat to coastal cities, residential communities, infrastructure, beaches, wetlands and ecosystems. How people respond to sea-level rise in the coastal zone will have potentially large economic and environmental costs. This book identifies and reviews the potential impacts of future sea-level rise based on present scientific understanding. Several aspects of the sea-level rise impacts to the natural environment, as well as its impact on human land development along the coast are explored. In addition, this book addresses the connection between sea-level rise impacts and current adaptation strategies, and assesses the role of the existing coastal management policies in identifying and responding to potential challenges. This book consists of public domain documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Book Global Warming Could Have a Chilling Effect on the Military

Download or read book Global Warming Could Have a Chilling Effect on the Military written by Richard F. Pittenger and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most debates and studies addressing potential climate change have focused on the buildup of industrial greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and a gradual increase in global temperatures. But this "slow ramp" climate change scenario ignores recent and rapidly advancing evidence that Earth's climate repeatedly has become much colder, warmer, wetter, or drier-in time spans as short as three to 10 years. Earth's climate system appears to have sensitive thresholds, the crossing of which shifts the system into different modes of operation and triggers rapid, non-linear, and not necessarily global changes. This new paradigm of abrupt climate change does not appear to be on the radar screens of military planners, who treat climate change as a long term, low-level threat, with mostly sociological, not national security, implications. But intense and abrupt climate changes could escalate environmental issues into unanticipated security threats, and could compromise an unprepared military. The global ocean circulation system, often called the Ocean Conveyor, can change rapidly and shift the distribution patterns of heat and rainfall over large areas of the globe. The North Atlantic region is particularly vulnerable to abrupt regional coolings linked to ocean circulation changes. Global warming and ocean circulation changes also threaten the Arctic Ocean's sea ice cover. Beyond the abrupt climatic impacts, fundamental changes in ocean circulation also have immediate naval implications. Recent evidence suggests that the oceans already may be experiencing large-scale changes that could affect Earth's climate. Military planners should begin to consider potential abrupt climate change scenarios and their impacts on national defense.

Book Climate Change in the Northeast

Download or read book Climate Change in the Northeast written by Radley Horton and published by Nca Regional Input Reports. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed to inform the 2013 National Climate Assessment, and a landmark study in terms of its breadth and depth of coverage and conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Global Change Research Program, Climate Change in the Northeast examines the known effects and relationships of climate change variables on the Northeast region, encompassing New England, the Mid-Atlantic, Chesapeake Bay Area and Appalachia. Prepared by a broad range of experts in academia, private industry, state and local governments, NGOs, professional societies, and impacted communities, it highlights past climate trends, projected climate change and vulnerabilities, and impacts to specific sectors and includes case studies on topics such as adaptive capacity and climate change effects. Rich in science and case studies, it examines the latest climate change impacts, scenarios, vulnerabilities, and adaptive capacity and offers decision makers and stakeholders a substantial basis from which to make informed choices that will affect the well-being of the region's inhabitants in the decades to come.

Book Mid Atlantic Regional Climate Impacts Summary and Outlook

Download or read book Mid Atlantic Regional Climate Impacts Summary and Outlook written by and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mid-Atlantic Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (MARISA) Regional Climate Impacts Summary and Outlook is a quarterly series produced by the MARISA program, a collaboration funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through the RAND Corporation and researchers at Pennsylvania State University, Carnegie Mellon University, Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, Cornell University, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. This series draws information from regional climate centers, news and weather information, and high-resolution climate data sets for the benefit of policymakers, practitioners, residents, and community leaders in the Mid-Atlantic region, with a focus on the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Projections of future climate in the Chesapeake Bay watershed come from the best available scientific information. For this fall 2022 version of the series, Part 1 details significant weather events that occurred from September through November 2022; Part 2 characterizes seasonal temperature and precipitation compared to historical averages; Part 3 describes seasonal weather forecasts and pertinent information for the upcoming winter season; and Part 4 presents an interactive tool that shows an analysis of the longest stretches of dry days and how they are expected to change in the future.

Book Coastal Sensitivity to Sea Level Rise

Download or read book Coastal Sensitivity to Sea Level Rise written by Climate Change Science Program and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Synthesis and Assessment Product (SAP), developed as part of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program, examines potential effects of sea-level rise from climate change during the twenty-first century, with a focus on the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. Using scientific literature and policy-related documents, the SAP describes the physical environments; potential changes to coastal environments, wetlands, and vulnerable species; societal impacts and implications of sea-level rise; decisions that may be sensitive to sea-level rise; opportunities for adaptation; and institutional barriers to adaptation. The SAP also outlines the policy context in the mid-Atlantic region and describes the implications of sea-level rise impacts for other regions of the United States. Finally, this SAP discusses ways natural and social science research can improve understanding and prediction of potential impacts to aid planning and decision making.
