Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thrilling novel of financial and political suspense and intrigue, The HAWALADAR recounts one man's ill-conceived attempt to meld the highly regulated culture of modern commercial banking with that of the parallel, underground netherworld of Hawala, a world-wide network of shadowy money-movers whose services are ideally suited to the needs of such nefarious clientele as organized crime, drug cartels, rogue governments and modern-day terrorist organizations. Tariq Nasir, is a brilliant, dynamic Pakistani-American who is amassing significant wealth via a fast-growing international business empire, structured to commingle modern business systems and technology with the highly secretive commercial practices of the old world and Hawala. The attempted assimilation of controlling interest in a highly regulated U.S. financial institution, however, ushers in the gradual unraveling of a family business plan conceived in Pakistan years prior to Mr. Nasir's birth. Logan Hart, is a man who is no stranger to financial or international intrigue. He is hired as number two executive at the Nasir-controlled Global United Bank of Chicago to assist in morphing the once local community bank into the kind of international banking organization conceived by the Nasir plan. The recently widowed, career banker and former special military operator begins to question the advisability of having accepted his new position when a series of strange events start happening shortly after his arrival. Doubt begins with the death of a much-beloved old regulator from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, who is murdered while examining the bank. Partnered with Cassandra Price, the federal official assigned by the OCC to investigate the circumstances of the untimely death of her associate, Hart finds himself unexpectedly attracted to the senior regulator, as the two help uncover an insidious plot by an Islamic fundamentalist terror group, who are planning a coordinated attack on several American cities with a biological weapon of mass destruction. The pair find themselves at the forward edge of the battle area in the War on Terror as they work with the FBI and agencies of the Department of Homeland Security in a race against time to avert a disaster of epic proportions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years I have felt the need for two things: Juma Khutbaat which are relevant to contemporary issues, delivered in simple language and idiom easily understood by common people and from which they can clearly take home application lessons. For the Khateeb it is always a challenge, having to think of an idea, researching material to support it, put it together as a Khutba and delivering it. I know how much of a help it is to have ready material on hand. With that in mind I decided to publish this book of 52 Khutbas (good for the full year which has 52 weeks) which I delivered at our Masjid on Road # 9, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad (Mahmood Habib Masjid and Islamic Centre), in the hope that those who have to give Khutbas will find it useful. Naturally I hope that this book will be useful and indeed enjoyable and a source of guidance and application of the Islamic Way in our lives, not only for Khateebs but also for all those who wish to read it and take heed of the subjects. The book is presented at cost and is available as a free download from my site

Book excerpt: When Gaby disappears from her Scottish home, it is assumed that her Pakistani father, Farhan, has kidnapped her. The spiralling headlines are only momentarily silenced when it emerges that Gaby may have fled of her own accord, choosing to spend her life in Pakistan. To the distress of her Scottish mother, Suzy, Gaby declares, “My name is Ghazala”, turning her back on "Gaby" and, seemingly, the West. This moving verbatim play reveals a cross-cultural love story that began in late-seventies Glasgow, a world away from the frantic "tug of love" well documented in the world's press. A captivating new play about love, family and ever-shifting identities, My Name Is . . . tells the story behind an event that fleetingly hit headlines in 2006 and continues to resonate throughout the UK and beyond. It was first produced by Tamasha at the Arcola Theatre, London, on 30 April 2014, before the production transferred to the Tron Theatre, Glasgow, on 29 May 2014.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the Prophet look like and why did only a small handful of Sahaba describe his physical characteristics? Why did the Prophet enjoin us to express fealty to Muslim leaders even when they were corrupt? What happen to an umma that is deprived of leadership? What is bay’a, is it necessary and what does it mean for Muslims today? How do we call people to Allah and is da'wah work for everyone? Maulana Yusuf Kandhelawi answers all these questions and much more through the beautiful and enlightening stories of the Sahaba. Since Hayat al-Sahaba first came out, it has inspired millions to understand Islam beyond concept, theory and interpretations of religious text. It immerses us into the reality of how Islam can be lived and applied in any time, past, present and future and that we all can be shaded by the mercy of Allah despite our differences like the Sahaba who despite their different personalities and temperaments all achieved the pleasure of Allah. A thousand talks on taqwa and love for Allah and His Prophet could not help us understand what one anecdote of the taqwa of the Sahaba and their love for Allah and His Prophet can teach us about the values and meanings we hold dear to our hearts as believers in Allah and His final Prophet.

Book SHI AS ARE THE AHL AL SUNNAH

Download or read book SHI AS ARE THE AHL AL SUNNAH written by Muhammad al-Tijani al-Samawi and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which is written by a well known scholar, a graduate of the Sorbonne, who switched from one Muslim school of thought to another, attempts to prove that the Muslims who truly follow the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet of Islam are actually none other than those referred to as the Shi`as. It details how these Shi`as (or Shi`ites) learn this Sunnah from the closest people to the Prophet of Islam: his immediate family members. It traces the history of the Muslims of the first Islamic century and how they split into two camps, thus setting the foundations for both of these major sects. It also deals with the persecution to which the immediate family members of the Prophet of Islam were subjected and the politicians who played a major role in widening the gap between the followers of this sect and those of that. As for its style, the author restricts himself to quoting major authentic Sunni works to prove his point, relying on an in-depth study of the Islamic history in general and of that of the first century in particular. Many controversial themes are discussed in this book, including that of the infallibility of the Prophet of Islam and of the Twelve Imams who descended from Ali and Fatima, cousin and daughter of the Prophet respectively. Finally, the book concludes with an Appendix containing an Arabic poem in one thousand lines in praise of Commander of the Faithful Ali composed by an Iraqi poet for the Arabic speaking readers.

Book Practicing Islam

  • Author : David W. Montgomery

  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Practicing Islam written by David W. Montgomery and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David W. Montgomery presents a rich ethnographic study on the practice and meaning of Islamic life in Kyrgyzstan. As he shows, becoming and being a Muslim are based on knowledge acquired from the surrounding environment, enabled through the practice of doing. Through these acts, Islam is imbued in both the individual and the community. To Montgomery, religious practice and lived experience combine to create an ideological space that is shaped by events, opportunities, and potentialities that form the context from which knowing emerges. This acquired knowledge further frames social navigation and political negotiation. Through his years of on-the-ground research, Montgomery assembles both an anthropology of knowledge and an anthropology of Islam, demonstrating how individuals make sense of and draw meanings from their environments. He reveals subtle individual interpretations of the religion and how people seek to define themselves and their lives as "good" within their communities and under Islam. Based on numerous in-depth interviews, bolstered by extensive survey and data collection, Montgomery offers the most thorough English-language study to date of Islam in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan. His work provides a broad view into the cognitive processes of Central Asian populations that will serve students, researchers, and policymakers alike.

Book Pious Practice and Secular Constraints

Download or read book Pious Practice and Secular Constraints written by Jeanette S Jouili and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chronicle of observant Muslim women’s daily challenges in secular settings is “a welcome contribution [that] can be useful in many disciplines” (Journal of Church and State). The visible increase in religious practice among young European-born Muslims has provoked public anxiety. Now, government regulations seek not only to restrict Islamic practices within the public sphere, but also to shape Muslims’—and especially women’s—personal conduct. Pious Practice and Secular Constraints chronicles the everyday ethical struggles of women active in orthodox and socially conservative Islamic revival circles as they are torn between their quest for a pious lifestyle and their aspirations to counter negative representations of Muslims within the mainstream society. Jeanette S. Jouili conducted fieldwork in France and Germany to investigate how pious Muslim women grapple with religious expression: for example, when to wear a headscarf, where to pray throughout the day, and how to maintain modest interactions between men and women. Her analysis stresses the various ethical dilemmas the women confronted in negotiating these religious duties within a secular public sphere. In conversation with Islamic and Western thinkers, Jouili teases out the important ethical-political implications of these struggles, ultimately arguing that Muslim moral agency, surprisingly reinvigorated rather than hampered by the increasingly hostile climate in Europe, encourages us to think about the contribution of non-secular civic virtues for shaping a pluralist society. “Jeanette Jouili’s book will be of great interest to scholars working on theories of modernity, orthodoxy, citizenship, gender, space, and ethics. It will be a superlative teaching aid for classes in anthropology, sociology, women's and gender studies, urban studies, philosophy, comparative religion, and more.” —American Ethnologist

  • ISBN : 0691149801
  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book Politics of Piety written by Saba Mahmood and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of Islamist cultural politics through the ethnography of a thriving, grassroots women's piety movement in the mosques of Cairo, Egypt. Unlike those organized Islamist activities that seek to seize or transform the state, this is a moral reform movement whose orthodox practices are commonly viewed as inconsequential to Egypt's political landscape. The author's exposition of these practices challenges this assumption by showing how the ethical and the political are linked within the context of such movements.
