Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Write the History of a Parish: An Outline Guide to Topographical, Records, Manuscripts, and Books Those Who have been engaged in any literary work are well aware how large a portion of time is often spent in merely learning the titles and somewhat of the contents of those books that treat of the different branches of the subject selected. Various books connected with parochial history, especially those that have been proved by experience to be the best handbooks, are therefore mentioned in these pages to facilitate reference. Space only has prevented me from considerably adding both to their number and description, but any further knowledge that I may have gleaned on topographical literature is heartily at the disposal of any worker who may privately apply to me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Church History The purpose of the present work is not to increase the number of text-books or to intrude into the domain of the finished and elaborate treatises with which scholars are familiar, but by a series of pleasing and instructive studies to lead the general reader both to further research and to a deeper love for the Church of God. The sequence of time and of order has been observed, yet each chapter is so designed that perusal need not be continuous or con secutive. In these pages, as the master of history may find views expressed and interpretations given which will serve at least to support or to make known con elusions not popularly recognized, so may the beginner discover a completeness which, though rude, is still sufficiently suggestive to leave upon the mind a cor rect impression. Book History of the Reformed Church in Reading Pa Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Reformed Church in Reading Pa Classic Reprint written by Daniel Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformed Church in Reading, Pa The history of the Reformed Church in the city of Reading has been a favorite study with the author for several years. It has been his aim to present this history in an authentic form, and in this effort he has spared neither time nor money to produce a reliable and satisfactory volume. Heretofore a good deal of the Church's local history was based upon mere tradition, and in this way many errors were accepted as historical facts. We have endeavored to authenticate all data, so as to present a reliable history. This required a great deal of research, but it was interesting employment, and the author feels regarded for all the time expended in the preparation of the book. The author is under obligations to Prof. W. J. Hinke for valuable assistance, especially in reference to the early period of the history of the First Reformed congregation in Reading; to B. Y. Shearer, esq., and John H. Bridenbaugh, esq., for assistance in examining the county records, and to the local pastors in a general way. The minutes of the Coetus, published several years ago, gave us valuable assistance in determining many problems in reference to the early pastors of the First church. The records of the First church, placed at our disposal by the consistory, have also been very helpful. The present volume is the first effort of its kind. We have sought to present an accurate and fairly complete history of all the Reformed congregations in Reading. To publish a complete history would have been far beyond the bounds of one volume. As it is, the book is considerably larger than it was originally intended to be. We hope the reader may find as much pleasure in perusing the book as the writer enjoyed in preparing it. Thurlestone! whose beauties prove, from flattery free. The happy theme where wranglers all agree; When troubles press, or health, that blessing, fails, What joy to range thy renovating vales! - Thy river to its mountain source explore, Or roam refreshed beside thy craggy shore. Thy distant offspring, with th' enthusiast's zest, Extol thee still in charms perennial drest; Trace and retrace each haunt of childhood sweet, And 'Oh, my country!' in their dreams repeat. And if at length, when years are on the wane, Surmounting bars, and bursting every chain, To their 'dear Thurlestone' they return once more, What pleasure to renew the joys of yore! Shrubs, rocks and flowers, voluptuous in attire, Whatever eye can charm, or heart desire, And in the distance, through some opening seen, Old ocean, in his vast expanse of green. 'Ille terrarum mihi praeter omnes Angulus ridet.' (Horace, Bk. II, Ode VI.) Translation - 'Beyond all others smiles for me That little corner of the world.' Book Gleanings in Church History Chiefly in Spain and France Classic Reprint

Download or read book Gleanings in Church History Chiefly in Spain and France Classic Reprint written by Rev Wentworth Webster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Church History Chiefly in Spain and France The student will see at once that the writer of the following pages has lived away from libraries, and that he has neither the means nor the pretension to write a Church History. These gleanings are only from a few outlying fields; but they have been honestly gathered, not pillaged in bulk from other men's sheaves. A good deal of misconception would be avoided if English Churchmen, desirous of information on the tenets of the Church of Rome, would seek it from accredited documents, not from manuals written in English ad hoc. The last compendious authoritative utterance of the Church of Rome is contained in the Acta et Decreta of the Latin-American Council held at Rome in 1899, and in the accompanying Appendix volume of documents (see Chap. xvi. below). An example will illustrate the difference between the two classes of publication. I have before me a i6mo vol. of 430 pages, entitled Catholic Belief, by the very Rev. Joseph Faa di Bruno, fourth edition, re-ordered and revised (Burns and Oates, 1883). It bears the imprimatur of Cardinal Manning. Not a word is said in it about the Cult of the Sacred Heart. The Latin-American Council was solemnly consecrated to the Sacred Heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The History of the Parish and Manor of Wookey

Download or read book The History of the Parish and Manor of Wookey written by Thomas Scott Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Parish and Manor of Wookey: Being a Contribution Towards a Future History of the County of Somerset One remark it is necessary to make on the spelling of the names of the inhabitants. In the first of the two indices, every name is placed in its proper position according to its spelling. It must not be supposed that on this account I regard the various spellings as denoting various persons. If I had stopped at some particular time, I might have come to some decision on the spelling, and made that spelling uniform through the book. But this I found to be more difficult than I cared to undertake, and especially so since we go on from our earlier notices down to the present day. I have therefore adhered to this rule, that wherever I quoted a document I gave the exact spelling of the name in that document, and I leave to the reader the duty of deciding whether the contemporary varieties of names belong to one or to different individuals. In hardly any case will a difficulty arise. It is vain to regret that my information was not fuller and more perfect. No one would have rejoiced more than the writer had it been so and yet what is here recorded proves that even a little country village has a history which is worth knowing, and therefore worth writing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Goodly Heritage: The Story of Calvary Parish In 1960, the first edition of A Goodly Heritage was published. As part of the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the building of Calvary Church. When this print ing was sold out, the Rev. Mayo Little suggested that a new edition be published, updating the first by the two decades that had transpired. With encouragement and suggestions from many members of the Parish, I have undertaken this second writing, finding to my surprise that the last twenty-two years were infinitely harder to write about than the first two hundred had been. Inaccuracies and omissions will be found, in spite of earnest efforts to avoid them. If this little story may some day lead a scholar to write a fuller and better history of this old parish, its writing will not have been in vain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logie, Vol. 1: A Parish History The idea of writing a History of the Parish was taken Up many years ago by the late Mr. William Troup, f.s.a. Session Clerk of Logie, and for some years interim-clerk to the Presbytery of Dunblane. He made extensive extracts from the Registers of the Presbyteries of Stirling and Dunblane, as well as from the Parish Records themselves. These are very voluminous, and have been of much service, although a great deal of the matter could not be utilised. This work of transcribing these old Registers was both slow and difficult, and only an ardent antiquary could have had the patience to undertake the task. Book The Church Past and Present

Download or read book The Church Past and Present written by H. M. Gwatkin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church, Past and Present: A Review of Its History We write not as advocates of this or that party in Church or State, but as students who are persuaded that history as well as science is the message of the Spirit to our own time. Our bond of union is the conviction that our Saviour's Person is itself the revelation, of which Scripture and the Church are only the record and the witness; but that His Holy Spirit is the Teacher of all ages, revealing more and more of Christ as men can bear it - to nations in history, to individuals in life. We believe that Spirit speaks in the creative thought and work of every age - in Origen and Athanasius, in Augustine and Gregory VII., in the reformers and the authors of our own Liturgy and Articles, and in the great discoveries of history and science in our own time. We are the heirs of all the ages, and we claim all truth as ours in Him who is the Truth. Though the historical facts which constitute the Gospel are recorded once for all, we believe that the unfolding of their meaning is a work of many ages, that its fulness far transcends the systems of Latin sectarianism, and that every return to the limitations of a buried past is so much sin against the Holy Spirit's teaching to our own time. The above paragraph was the basis of the present volume, and states its general purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book What Is History Classic Reprint written by Edward Potts Cheyney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is History? That is to say, history, according to this View of the case, is meant to instruct. It should teach some lesson. The lesson may be a political one or a moral one or a religious one. But it is always history with a purpose, - its justification is ethical. Far and wide through historical writing can be found this ideal. Sometimes it is consciously and strongly held. There is a work in eight volumes in the University Library with the title, The History of England on Christian Principles. Sometimes it is less consciously and clearly acknowledged, and yet the his torian none the less tells his story under its influence. Macaulay is a devotee of the Whig party and is teaching its doctrines when he is writing his history of the seventeenth century as much as when he is speaking or voting in Parliament in the nineteenth. Froude uses his history of England to teach the evils of the Roman Catholic Church and to discredit Anglican clericalism, exactly as he uses any of his other forms 'of writing. Nor is it intended to be in any important degree an autobiography. What I have attempted to do, and all I have attempted, has been to recall in writing something of what went on in the parish during the thirty-seven years of my rectorate, various characteristic incidents that occurred, certain personalities with whom it was my good for tune to have been most closely and helpfully associated and who played particularly important parts in my Winnetka ministry, and to expose my thinking and elements of my personal conviction that underlay and motivated my pastoral, as well as my teaching and preaching, ministry, while it was my God-given privilege to serve as Rector of Christ Church. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Free Church History This little book has been written mainly with the object of interesting the young people of all ages who are connected with the Evangelical Free Churches, and of setting them on the right course of study in order to arrive at a proper knowledge of the history of their spiritual forefathers. For this purpose, great care has been taken to make the story historically accurate, or as nearly so as is possible within the limits assigned. The author has attempted to be strictly fair to men of all parties, and has avoided all assumptions that, in the conflicts of past times, one side was right and the other necessarily wrong. This method of writing, of course, deprives the reader of some of that glow which comes from the perusal of books that are more partisan, but the loss is surely compensated by the increased historical sense which results from a more sober view of old controversies. Book Notes on St Martin s Church and Parish Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on St Martin s Church and Parish Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Baker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on St. Martin's Church and Parish My friend, Mr. Baker, has asked me to write a few words of introduction to the Notes which he has compiled on St. Martin's Church. The Book owes its origin to a small cause. A few years ago a sermon was preached at St. Martin's, in which some account was given of the history of the Church and its ornaments. It aroused considerable interest, and as some members of the con gregation expressed a desire to, see the information in print, Mr. Baker kindly_undertook the publication of a leaflet, which should serve as a guide for visitors, containing a brief summary of the different points to be noticed in the fabric of the Church, &c. It was felt, however, that there was so much more to be said on the subject, and so much interesting material to draw from in the Churchwardens' Accounts, Vestry Books, and documents in the Church Chests, that Mr. Baker consented to do a further service, and collect and record all that he thought would be of value to those who desired to know more of the history which gathered round their Parish Church. The result is now given to the reader in the following pages. To the writer, the Book, which is the outcome of many hours of research, has been a labour of love, but he would not wish it to be regarded as more than a collection of Notes. As such, however, it is a veritable mine of wealth, from which a great deal of interesting and valuable information can be drawn. Mr. Baker deserves our warmest thanks for placing so many facts within our reach, and helping us to realise something of the part which our old Church and Parish have played in the history of this City and Country.
